The United States overall is very car centric, and we need to adapt a more European mindset when it comes to using public transportation. In most U.S. cities, people look down on public transportation and understandably so. It needs to be "fashionable", which is exactly how it is marketed in Western Europe. Transportation in most places is clean, with new train cars and buses, and they offer tiered services to entice even the crème de la crème to leave their cars home. We have to do that here, and that means NOT focusing all resources on the damn subways. It simply won't work. Expand express bus service, ferry service and other services that people who won't use the subway WILL use because it's cleaner and seen as nicer since it is usually more expensive.
