NYC Transit - August 26 Board Meeting

The August 26th Board Meeting was a special one for the MTA, as they usually do not host board meetings in August. 

They hosted this one due to their financial situation. While they did not actually vote on anything yet, they do have a plan in case they must lay it out.

NYCT PROPOSED BUDGET CUTS

-The subway could run at an 8 minute frequency, SIR 30 minutes off peak.

-Buses could run at a frequency of 15 minutes

-AAR On-Demand may end

 

LIRR AND MNR BUDGET CUTS

-Service frequency of 60 minutes, 2 hours off-peak or on lower ridership branches

-Eliminating service on one or more LIRR branches

-Delaying ESA Start

-Eliminating service west of Hudson

 

BRIDGES AND TUNNELS

-Peak period tolls 

-Ending resident discounts

-Less timely response to service

-More lane closures

 

CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION

-Pause of several capital projects including ESA

 

WAGE FREEZE AND CASH FLOW OPTIONS MAY BE CONSIDERED.

Til 2021, the MTA faces a cash shortfall of $12B.

 

Due to the financial crisis, the MTA started a new hashtag called #SaveTransit on their website to spread awareness.

Their video campaign ads are already on their YouTube.

It's kinda sad it has to be like this. I hope some funds can be recouped and bus fare collection can close the deficit by a bit.
