BwyKingsbridgeCar Posted July 25, 2022 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2022 Today's NY Daily News has an article stating that the Sixth Avenue signal upgrade (including towers) will postpone improvements to Lexington Avenue signal upgrade. Andrew Albert is quoted as objecting, as the Lex handles far more passengers. The article (behind a paywall) is quite detailed. It seems that what they call F (really Sixth Avenue from Jay Street north) has the right rolling stock to match CBTC, but the Lex doesn't. Maybe I'm confused, so forum readers, please help. Thanks!

Interesting, so this essentially confirms that the next order of subway cars MUST ensure that the and lines get NTT-compatible rolling stock. It makes sense, since the CBTC territory on 8th Ave would restrict which subway lines can be rerouted via 8 Av anyways (meaning the and ). This would mean that the 6th Av and 8th Av Lines from 59 St-Columbus Circle to Jay St-MetroTech will likely get CBTC signaling, and then make the the fourth subway line to be almost fully CBTC (behind the , and ), since the would be CBTC by this point between Kew Gardens Union Turnpike and World Trade Center, and the can merge their CBTC signal territories to encompass the line from Kew Gardens Union Turnpike to West 8 St-New York Aquarium. Stillwell Av cannot be done due to the sporadic terminal track swaps that could happen with the Non-CBTC and lines. Having the and upgraded also ensures that trains on those routes can be rerouted via Culver if there is an issue or the Brooklyn route swaps that happen on weekends even if CBTC is activated on Culver. Also this could mean that CBTC on Culver could extend past Church Av to Bergen St (since the also has CBTC rolling stock) and eventually to Court Square. I think after this, they might as well just go uptown from 59 St-Columbus Circle to 168 St / Bedford Park Blvd and south from Jay St-MetroTech to Euclid Av. The problem now is that if a train would break down on the Broadway Line, there's almost no way to reroute trains since 6th Av will not be an option and the cannot use 6 Av to reroute itself around any closure of the 63 St connector past 57 St-7 Av. So riders on 4 Av, and Brighton, brace yourselves and hope that no yellow line trains break down anywhere otherwise, the trains will have to be short-turned in Brooklyn (Prospect Park on the , 36 St on the , Whitehall St on the , or for the few trains that can make it to midtown, to Times Sq-42 St & 57 St-7 Av.
