Penn station alert!!!!!!!

Rail service in and out of New York Penn Station is subject to delays of 30-45 minutes due to a disabled train. NEC, NJCL and Midtown Direct service is affected.

Trains are subject to 10-15 minute delays systemwide due to weather conditions

Damn... Must be stuck on the 2 track section. The ARC tunnel would solve this issue.

Well, when the PRR built it, they originally ran 3rd rail from a terminal near today's newark penn station under the river into new york. At the time, there were 3 other railroads serving ferries into nyc from nj. When the line was unified end to end (newark through to sunnyside yard) and catenary was used the entire length (though the 3rd rail is actually still there in the tunnel into penn station) the idea of needing expansion was all most laughable as they increased capacity just by allowing trains to utilize the tunnels into ny from their origin. This put the CRRNJ out of business as well as most of the others, then they merged with the central to become penn central, then bankrupt, then conrail then amtrak.

When this line was built trains ran between nyc, philadelphia, and dc, as well as nyc, philadelphia, and chicago. There were no through trains to boston. The new york central lines had that service from grand central.

So you see, new york was effectively the terminal, similar to how boston is today, vs having through service more similar to say trenton, or 30th street station.

Nowdays trains travel from boston to dc though nyc, nyc to chicago etc etc. Amtrak wasnt a twinkle in anyone's eye when the tunnels were constructed. It was the age of rail and the order of the day was expansion, however through service wasnt envisioned or even possible till much later.

The expansion plans come now when expansion will once again be the priority (thankfully).
