  1. IIMN, it has to do with the storage tracks at 174 Street Yard, because not all of them are long enough to accommodate 600' trains.

How is THAT relevant? 1 2 6 7 all hold 600 ft (as well as both leads), and 5 holds 240 ft which wasn't even enough for the 8 car (C) . And 207 Yard can accommodate 600 ft trains, although some tracks can only be double stacked with a 600 and a 480.

  2. For Train operators THE biggest difference between the A and B is the method of train movement. The A has Automated Train Supervision and all gap stations are dispatched from RCC. They know who you are, where you're going, and which signal you just hit at all times. The B is more antiquated and has local towers and gap station dispatchers, so you get passed from area to area. Both have their pros and cons. You can "get away" with more in the B but you also won't have your hand held so have to know your lineups.

Another significant difference is the reporting locations. The A is majority uptown and Bronx jobs, while the B is based mostly in Queens and Brooklyn. The A also has outdoor stretches for every single line, while the B will have you in the tunnels for the majority of your day.

  3. I remember that an employee here mentioned that the correct term is a "skip-stop" run. It's supposed to get a train back on schedule. A battery run is when a train deadheads not in service. If I'm wrong, then any TA personnel correct me.

A battery run is a sequence of trains leaving the terminal after a long delay for crowd control. Like if there was a long delay in northbound (A) service up to 207 followed by a conga line of (A) trains coming up, the first one would run non-stop to 125, the second one leave right behind it and run non-stop to 168, and the third make regular stops. That term gets constantly misused on the message boards - a battery run is a SEQUENCE of trains, a skip or run is when a SINGLE train bypasses stops to make up time.

Also, we DO run skips between 168 and 207 when needed.

  4. According to other employees on here, they're banned from those lines as well and its up in crew rooms.

According to WHO on here? We're going to be getting some 32s on the Bravo pretty soon and I can tell you for sure that they are NOT banned from that line. They just can't run through the Montague tube, but the switch at Lawrence St was just refurbished so that they can turn at Court if need be.

  5. Is anyone planning to take the first (Q) train onto Second Avenue on the opening date?

Does anyone know if the first (Q) operating on SAS (revenue service) is going to depart from Lex-63rd, or is is going to depart down from 96th St?

Already ridden it a couple times, so I'm good....

I'm sure it's all gonna depend on what Prince Andrew wants to do. It's probably originate at either Coney Island or be a special train out of 57-7.

  6. When do they ever send the Bravo up broadway during blocks anyway? They suspend them. When i worked the B and a huge problem came up. We usually got discharged and ran light back the other way or sat there. It happens. But this isnt about B.

When the (B) is suspended, do you really think that the trains which already left the terminal just disappear into a poof of air?

I've heard that the Montague tunnel clearance issues are being worked on, and the restriction will eventually be lifted, but as of now no 32, 42 or museum equipment is permitted in there, nor is any 75 ft equipment permitted on BJ1&2 of the Chrystie Cut or anywhere between Broad & lower level of Jamaica Center or the Canarsie Line.

And unless this interior filmer received permission from management at Bombardier or the TSS's in charge of this delivery to go on board and start touching buttons and switches in the cab, he's putting not only his own career at risk, but whomever DID give him permission as well (and I can guarantee that NOBODY gave him permission to put that video on public youtube). It is also stated in the NYCT rulebook (which ALL employees, regardless of title, must follow) which states that track access is permitted ONLY when in the course of your duties and if a safe alternate path can't be provided. A signal helper has no business walking in 207 yard on the tracks unless he is working on a signal or switch within the yard.

  7. Hey at least he'll always be known as the "first" person to be on a 179, even as the yard master, line Superintendent, property protection and corporate communications watch his video and decide what to do with him. Bombardier may also take issue with unauthorized employees screwing around on equipment that hasn't even been signed over, especially considering the history of this order. But hey, no matter what happens, he can still brag that he was the "FIRST" one to video the interior of a brand new 179 and that's worth more than 35 years of MTA checks and an pension ever could be.

  8.

Second, it's perfectly fine to take pictures in a yard or a depot if you work for the MTA. Several people on this site who work for the MTA have done so.

207 yard specifically has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for electronic device usage within the yard except in designated break areas. Also, why do you think I haven't posted any photos of the towers I work in? I actually care about keeping my job.

  9. When did they change the Bx10 route? Rode it both ways today for the first time in a couple weeks and I was surprised to see it now remains on Paul Ave all the way to Sedgewick, and no longer goes via Goulden. And also has has a new stop at the corner of Paul and Sedgewick!

  10. So were any of those punks who got arrested at 205 St last night for fscking with rollsigns members here? Or friends of members here? I don't know how anyone can call themselves a "railfan" when they continue to vandalize the trains they claim to love......at least this time we won't be having any crazy R68 photos that were "randomly" caught in action......

  11. Might as well forget about the second school of thought (for now and the foreseeable future at least) since it has been well documented that Lefferts riders do not want to ride trains directly to/from there that run local in Brooklyn and absolutely will not stand for the loss of direct service from a train that runs express in Brooklyn.

    So let them walk.

  12. not at all? No R32s on the M? I heard it might happen because the cars were lighter and work was being done at Myrtle.

There's only so many R32's to go around, and the ones that ENY has are gonna stay on the (J) . Putting 32's on the (M) makes no sense because a. they can't be used in OPTO service b. they don't have the proper rollsigns and c. 2 car drilling at Fresh Pond Yard isn't feasible unless they bring back the handswitchman job. Even if they did push the 32 fleet over to the (M) it wouldn't be enough to cover the line for weekday service so it would still have to keep some 160s.....or.....dare I say it.....143s!

  13. There are nice big signs at City Hall and Dekalb towers stating NO R32/42 EQUIPMENT THROUGH THE MONTAGUE TUBE.

    (B) and (D) trains get rerouted there quite often actually. Usually it's a short period, but it happens about once a week average. Once they've left Stillwell on the regular route, they've lost their chance to run up the (F) . If something is happening on the bridge or 6th Ave, the easiest thing to do in order to keep service moving is to re-route to Whitehall middle. This lets customers transfer to the (F) at Jay St. The only other options would be to send them over the south side of the bridge to turn at 57-7 or to turn them at Atlantic, both of which will back up the railroad.

Anyway........it's still unlikely that the R32's will run anywhere except the (A)(C) or (J) since it really doesn't make ANY sense to send them to any yards other than 207 or ENY. And R32 on the (M) ain't happening, keep dreaming.

  14. What, no 6 pages of foam for the R68 that was on the (Q) today?

I was at Canal St (A)(C)(E) at around 7 tonight, and I saw an OOS R32 (C) pull in on the downtown express track. Except it was a 4 car set (ending in 3782), signed up as a (C) in the front/back lights. Might be a dumb question, but can anybody shed some light as to why this would be there in that state?

Sounds to me like it was a 4 car transfer from 207 Yard to Pitkin or Coney Island Yard.

Which is why I think the (G) to Forest Hills-71st should come back too. The R68's would be able to fit thru the tunnels connecting to the QBL, the sets ran on the (F) and (R) once so why not? It would also be an interesting sight to see, as R46's ran on the (G) before the R44's on the (A)(C) retired and before the R160's came in to serve the QBL and Broadway Lines. That and the original (M) to Bay Pkwy for more service via the West End as the (N) and (R) need help there too. Again, leave the orange color but bring back the original line.

The (M) to Bay Parkway can't run anymore. The Broad St-Montague cut is OOS until further notice, and there is currently no plan in place to restore it...........and huh? What do you mean keep the (M) orange? The only reason it's orange now is because it runs up 6th Ave, instead of down Nassau St. Even if you COULD send it back to Bay Parkway, it would no longer go to 6th Ave and having it orange would make no sense.

  15. Well, like i said before in my previous posts, im kind of new to this whole civil service stuff, so im taking everything you guys say into consideration. The only reason why i said i would like to take both is because someone mentioned to me before that it would take a year or so to start going through the list for train operator. So by the time they start calling people for that position, i should have my year of experience and 120 supposed credits by than. @Subwayguy

You need to be eligible ON THE DAY ON THE EXAM, not on the day you are called. As I stated above, they are changing around the eligibility requirements for OC exams so nobody knows for sure what is gonna be on the next application, but they are going to become MORE strict, not less.

  16. That's really interesting you say that because on page seven of http://web.mta.info/nyct/hr/pdf/career_brochure.pdf, for the Conductor, all it says is "A high school diploma or its equivalent is required." This says nothing about two years of customer service experience.

That book also has the old salary rates. It needs to be updated.

The customer service requirement on the new conductor exam is straight from the mouth of the NYCT schoolcar director. Read the application carefully when it gets posted. There are also much stricter requirements on the new station agent application than there have been in the past.
