  1. There's nothing to be passed about. Brooklyn Bridge ststion is actually in Manhattan, not Brooklyn, so there's nothing wrong with the announcement. Now, the Brooklyn Bound F calling itself a Manhattan bound F express train at Roosevelt Island, THAT you should be angry about!

That's not what I meant. I know Brooklyn Bridge is in Manhattan but my point is that whenever we're in a Manhattan stop on the (6), those announcements come on like "This is a Manhattan bound (6) Train" and the train IS IN MANHATTAN. But the Manhattan bound (F) announcement at Roosevelt Island is in Manhattan but they don't want to get the passengers confused that they are already in Manhattan and get off at the wrong stop. But yeah it should be FIXED!

  2. BTW, there is this one set on the <6> that's been pissing me off. Lol but I was riding an R142A (6) one day and that one set for some reason when this set is at a Manhattan stop, it says "This is a Manhattan bound.... (6) Train. The Next STOP is.... (Astor Place)".  Why and what is causing this to happen? Just curious. To hear it skip to 1:37

  3. Sure, as long as you don't print them out and post them in the subway.

Then again, people don't tend to pay attention to the signs anyway

"The next Manhattan bound J train will arrive in approxamently 1,911 minutes."

Do you edit them through Paint? Or as PDF?

  4. Akzidenz-Grotesk was used on every sign until the late 80s (with the exception of the J, which went Helvetica in the mid-80s). All signs since have been in Helvetica, but rollsigns on most R32s, some R42s, essentially all R62s/R62As, and a handful of R68s/R68As. At the same time, printed documents like service changes and all online bullets except for the J are in Akzidenz-Grotesk.

The one thing I've been trying to figure out is what some stations like West 4th, 34th St, and Astor Place use. The font is not quite AG nor Helvetica: the lower case Es are ever so slightly slanted.

    <PICTURES>

So the system may in fact be Akzidenz-Grotesk BQ Medium for older rollsigns, printed bullets, and rare old signage; Impact for a few rare signs at South Ferry and Hoyt-Schermerhorn; Akzidenz-Grotesk Book for most 1990s signage; and Helvetica for modern signs.

Could you make (MTA) Service Changes Docs./Posters? Possibly but it might be illegal?

  5. I am not 100% sure but the font should be in the Helvetica style. Here is the png then an actual pic of the bullet from the picture window sign on the side of a R68 for comparison.

Once again, Thank You Realizm! :D;) But the helvetica Q comes out like this

  6. Thanks. I'm studying for this damn test next week and these are one of the subjects that may be on it.

There's a direct link between respiratory failure and kidney failure. If in the case of MERS it causes severe pneumonia what happens is that the lungs becomes so consolidated it creates a cascade effect. Lack of proper ventilation due to infection causes poor perfusion (poor gas exchange) in the alveoli of the lung parenchyma, which causes a V/Q mismatch. That can result in respiratory distress leading to failure. In the process no oxygen is going to the vital organs which includes the kidneys. In the worst case scenario, the oxygen supply to the heart is cut off resulting in cardiac failure. If that happens the patient dies.

That was why with MERS and also its cousin SARS had such a high mortality rate. (30% vs 50%). The CDC also WHO are taking this outbreak very seriously. As of now only antivirals such as Tamiflu or Relenza may at least reduce the symptoms. In severe cases, interventions such as

(Warning: graphic) may be required to save the patients life.

Damn! A lot to study for....

  7. I've been following a recent outbreak of a new respiratory illness called MERS which is caused by a novel strain of a coronavirus that is usually endemic to camels but now can infect humans. Coronaviruses tend to cause lower respiratory infections which can be lethal in some cases. SARS also belongs in the same family of coronaviruses. Symptoms of MERS is usually pneumonia much like SARS however it can also create the onset of kidney failure, which is unusual for a coronavirus infection.  The persons most susceptible to the disease are older ones unlike SARS that can cause further harm to younger ones and young adults due to what is called a cytokine storm. About 100 cases have been documented so far.

Now it seems MERS is spreading to the US as was reported yesterday. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-27264460

Such novel viruses, also the viruses traditionally responsible for the common cold, flu or tuberculosis are usually transmitted by means of airborne droplets. That means that usually if a person sneezes droplets can travel at the most about 3 feet. Hand hygiene is essential when traveling to prevent yourself from getting sick. It works as this is exactly one of things healthcare professionals in hospitals must do when going from patient to patient following droplet precautions. Wash hands and/or use sanitizer frequently.

    Excellent research! +1

  8. Well the problem lies in the original reason why the (N) and (R) swapped terminals back in the past decades: This was because of the fact that the (R) had no direct access to a yard. With the current arrangement, the (R) has access to Jamaica yard unlike before when it ran to Astoria. The (N) even though it once upon a time ran to Forst Hills always had access to CI Yard.

    Thank you Realizm :D;)
