    I think that pic of the 142 layed up at 103rd is an old pic from the (2) terminates at 96th G.O and we got trolled......

    That R142 was there yesterday. I can attest to that, but no idea why.

  2. Happy Friday everyone, hope everyone's safe out there and their love ones are too. 

    Just want to give my respects & condolences to the family of Garrett Goble, motorman who was killed in the line of duty during the midst of the pandemic approximately past 3am tonight (one year ago). It was truly disgusting and upsetting the way he went out and the unnecessary circumstances of why this had to happen to an essential worker and most importantly human being. Wishing all the MTA workers out there a great weekend and stay safe. Ya'll keep the city moving without a shadow of a doubt.

    Excuse my rant, but cheesy looking. There's no need for that LED green circle if its running on the (2) IMO. Can't they be more creative than that and the fact that it's only on 1 car. I'm sorry but if this is where my tax dollars are going towards then I don't see ANY improvement. Just my two cents

  4. The (MTA) spent approximately $600 million on those trains for all intents and purposes of replacing the R32s & R42s that were still remaining pass their useful life. So yes they will stay and serve the transit system for the long haul. It wouldn't make any logical sense at all to pull them of again and restore a car fleet close to 60 years of age back into service. The R179s are still relatively brand new even after two years so there still some kinks they have to troubleshoot on. They continue to check and maintain any viable aspect of the R179s so they'll get it together moving forward. The R142s which were made by the same builder as the R179s (Bombardier) had there issues early on as well, as did other subway car fleets. Despite all the mechanical flaws, bottom line at this point and time the R179s are needed and the (MTA) can pick up the slack once the warranty on the R179s expire.

    There's no need for the blame game towards the T/Os or train crew in general.  They are quality trained to know how to operate and control the movement of their assigned train. Unless there's more to it with said "Black Box", T/Os don't deserve to be scapegoated. The Bombardier techs from what I've heard don't grab as decent as the Kawasaki techs do when applying the braking system into a station and in bad weather it's the same issue with all the tech trains.

    Those flat wheels must scare the crap out of bikers and Walkers on the Manhattan Bridge whenever those flat wheel sets travel over the bridge.

     

    The Pikin Yard R46s are still holding up pretty good, 45 years old and still the backbone of the longest line in the system, impressive!

    The R68As have recently had their trucks overhauled with new wheels added. But i agree the C.I. R46s are really running hard and could use some TLC at this point.

  6. The entire R211 order is to replace the NYCT R46's & SIR R44's ONLY. An actual fleet replacement for the R68/R68A's is yet to be planned & announced.

    Unless there's considerable mechanical or structure damage happening to the R68/68A's, I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon. At least not within this current decade.

  7. The R211's obvious arrival is to further support CBTC ready corridors. In this case the next installation of CBTC on the 8 Av line is a prime example of where these trains will end up. So I'll bank on the (A)(C)(E) to be true primary subway lines to inherent the R211's.  I'll even through in the (F)(R) just for the sake of Queens Blvd being CBTC-equipped I'll exclude the (M) for now seeing that is only 8-cars. Remember, this is just from the base order alone which is forecasted as 440 standard (R211A) cars. Now the "Option Order" for this fleet could put things in perceptive going forward with fleet expansion.  Only time will tell.

    I went to the Astoria Lines Stations and they were absolutely amazing.  Then I went back to my home line the (7) and the local stations look like they are about to fall apart (they are falling apart). 

    Seems like the MTA never got to renovating those Flushing local stations (52,69,82,90,103 and 111 St) even during the mass station renovation of 2010.

    But to have something as good as those on the Astoria Line on the (7) , it would be awesome

    Those elevated stations on the (7) are due for "station renewal work" through the 2020-2024 capital program. However I believe there isn't and actual date or time on when that will happen.

There's also the question of why there are so many 90 degrees turns on various lines that don't actually happen in real life. If they can do angled curves elsewhere, why does the Brighton line need to make four sharp turns between Brighton Beach and West 8 Street? Why is the Broadway-Manhattan Bridge connection completely eliminated in favor of what looks like another East River tunnel bypass?

    Even ignoring some of the bizarre design choices and map overlays, I don't find this a particularly useful map at present compared to various 3rd party options readily available. Why is everything so small while still being so condensed at the same time? Users cannot see station names until they zoom in to a neighborhood. It's even worse for the subway lines, most notably on Queens Blvd. It's especially hard to see the various services on shared trunk lines as the line widths are inexplicably one pixel wide unless the map is zoomed in to the station level. As most people will be using this map on their phones, it would be much more useful if service lines were wider and more pronounced at higher zoom levels as there's presently very little contrast overall. Same thing with station labels. Another thing apparent, and which partially defeats the purpose of using a geographical map overlay, is that the roads also do not appear until the map is zoomed in fully, though it's unknown whether this is a limitation of the map overlay or something designed by the MTA. Another issue with the overlay and this circles back to an earlier point, is the complete lack of contrast. Everything from the general landmass/water to the roads to the parks are all in either in shades of light gray/white or a very light shade of green.

    Another tick against this map is its current iteration is that it's presently very slow and buggy. Pulling up the real-time arrivals or moving the map can be a slow process at times due to system requirements. If this is to be used by the average consumer and become a necessary travel tool, the app must be optimized for more lower end devices rather than the latest and most powerful devices currently available.

    While this map is a big step in the right direction, showing actual current service visually for the first time in an official capacity rather than through third party apps and programs, it has a long way before it can replace those other apps.

    Agreed. Personally, it's innovative to say the least but yes there are some spots that are way off in geographic nature. From my experience so far navigating thru this map has been choppy.

    C.I. yard R46's REALLY need some inspections. Based on what I've seen on the (N)(Q)(W) some of them just look beat up..... flat wheels that need truing, tape coming off on the side roof end bonnets and dirty route signs.

    Just like to add, so far this weekend has been an interesting one to railfan. (N) trains to Brighton Beach, (4) using some spared R62A's. R179's slowly coming back into action.

    And i can understand why he's mad. I'm tired of this oh the (A) needs to loose it's tech trains because CI should have a new fleet. We aren't that dumb, We get it Black neighborhoods along the Fulton st line deserve to get their new trains taken away and lets give them to the white folks in south brooklyn.

    It's very obvious, The (A) out of all lines needs a new fleet. I'm tired of the oh the (A) don't need em yet, They better give the (A) a chunk of that Base order R211.

    Well the (A) is a primary subway line for the R211s there's no doubt about that, considering they are intended to replace the R46s.
