Wow. I liked the location of the old terminal cause it was near Reading Terminal Market.

I guess no space for Hound and Peter Pan at Amtrak 30th Street Station.

Was Greyhound booted out of its old location on short notice or something? It's odd that they would choose such an shitty replacement.

The lease was up at Filbert Terminal, but the move had been in the works for months. It was supposed to happen in March.

QM5 / QM6 major problems in the afternoon

Hell of a commute today, Long story below:

Took the 1:40 PM QM5 out of Glen Oaks. Everything was fine until we arrived at Union Turnpike and Parsons BLVD. Wheelchair person attempted to board the bus, and the lift broke down on a NEW bus.The B/O of the QM5 was very kind and understanding. We were delayed by at least 20 mins for the first attempt, then a QM6 pulled up behind us, and we all moved to the QM6. The wheelchair individual tried to board that bus and then the lift AGAIN broke down. This was a new bus so what the heck??

At this point we are delayed for 1hour+, and people are requesting Ubers from Eastern Queens all the way to the city because the entire express bus on Union Turnpike is delayed. We end up having to wait for a third bus. The wheel chair individual again attempts to board the bus again.

On the Third attempt, me and another passenger who are both engineers were able to help the three Bus Operators get the individual on {Lift was having trouble at first going up}. First and foremost this is unacceptable that the new busses are not able to get a wheelchair man on the bus.

Second all of us passengers deserve a refund after being delayed for at least an hour, bus operators were very helpful and kind and it wasn't their fault, but we should not have been delayed 1 hour getting into the city, we all were late to work, and some had to take Ubers all the way down to Queens. College point operators the three of them were very kind and understanding.

Damn that sucks. It seems W/C lifts on coach buses can be very prone to malfunctioning. I've seen it happen on a few Prevosts and MCI.

Why is it that the 167Q is the one that continues down on Teaneck Road instead of the 167 or 167T. The 167Q should continue straight across Degraw.

I think it's a holdover from the PSCT/TNJ days. There's a 1952 schedule that shows every 167 trip serving Queen Anne Road. The 167Q is basically the local with Queen Anne Road as part of the trunk route so to speak.

I figured Forest Hill would be the type of area that realtors would emphasize considering its reputation as the most affluent section of Newark (e.g. If you were to refer to Riverdale as North Bronx or something like that). When you say that they don't use the terms Upper/Lower Roseville, do you mean that residents of that area just generally say "Roseville" or that they just say North Ward/North Newark?

For the #44, do you think having it stop in Union City would boost ridership? (Yeah, the current intrastate portion is mostly residential neighborhoods, without any major transfer points or shopping centers along the route, with the exception of maybe Bloomfield itself (and even then, it stops just short of Bloomfield Avenue). During rush hour, most trips should bypass Union City because of the availability of the bus lane (maybe have some extra trips that only run Bloomfield - Union City) but off-peak, I think it should stop there.

That could be an idea for the 66/66R, since it already has off peak trips serving Montclair State University. If I'm not mistaken, the 191 doesn't go to Union City during the week.

They're installing these tablet-shaped devices on top of the operator that list all the stops and their runs. It's kinda neat, it lists all the stops and the following stops and also the next run, when to deadhead, pull-in and this is separate from the clever device monitor sitting next to the farebox.

    -----------------------------------------------------

I was riding the 10PM N20H/G (interlined) from Hicksville and the bus was early so the driver had to pull over at some stops and wait the time out. During the whole run, the operator kept pressing the accelerator and the brake immediately after, similar to the same feeling that you get when riding the MTA OG hybrids. The engine definitely didn't like it though and I think the bus wasn't shifting properly on the flat roads later. It was #1748 I believe, bus definitely has seen better days. Also caught #1752 out and it had a clean (maybe new) back engine panel that seemed out of place.

The 1700 series were never comfortable rides.

I have two 2-part questions for y'all here:

1] What was the longest unlinked trip you've ever endured on any MTA bus route? (express or local, doesn't matter)

    • If you can remember, what bus route was it & what were the circumstances behind it?

2] What's the most amount of modes (you can include rail transit) you've ever used to complete one linked trip within the city for a commute? (Do not include joyrides/fantrips)

    • ...of those unlinked trips, how many of them included buses?

    1) I wanna say the B15 from JFK Airport to Bed-Stuy. I think I was trying to come home from a fantrip

    2) 3 modes from Bed-Stuy to the Teleport. Took the (J) to Broad St, walked to the SI Ferry and took it to transfer to the (S46). Took 2 and a half hours in the morning.

DOT had to fix the 9 St lift bridge for a few months which caused that, but last time i rode it (which was around 2-3 weeks ago) service was running normally.

Personally, I think the Redesign should get rid of a decent number of Bed Stuy routes, namely the 48 and either the 52 or 26 (leaning more towards the 26) or merge some Bed Stuy routes. Theres too much service going through those areas, and it really causes a problem in Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg. (If I get flamed for this, oh well)

Getting rid of the B52 would force some passengers to head north for the 38, which , eastbound is hindered by Classon, and westbound, gets stalled by traffic from Classon to Nostrand, and sometimes as far back as Tompkins.

I would rather have a compromise. I prefer the current map over the old style. They definitely shouldn’t change it to the just four colors by route type that they had in the draft plan.

Like they did for Staten Island with a separate express bus map, they should do that for each borough, plus for Queens have a separate map for the express to the subway routes also. As for the color coding for different destinations, maybe have maps that highlight the routes in those areas. One for all routes that serve Flushing, one for LIC, one for each of the hubs in Jamaica (LIRR, Parsons/Archer, 165 St)

I always wondered was why they never identified the stops for the express routes like they would for limited and select bus routes.

I've thought about doing something like this (integrating the bus system in NJ) a long time ago, but never got around to it....

Anyway, I would've left out Transbridge & included Ocean Ride, MCAT, and whatever's left of BurLINK instead...

I didn't give the local agencies a second though (and I should have).

The main, if not the only reason I included Trans-Bridge was because they had NJT buses.

  10. So I had too much time of my hands and made in renumbered scheme, based on what would happen in NJT took over all the private operated routes at once (but contracted out as needed).

    Thoughts? @go25 @B35 via Church @BreeddekalbL

I think if any bus is going to serve both GWB and Midtown, it should serve East Midtown, serving Mount Sinai, Harlem, and the stops formerly served by the M98.

...but I don't know if demand warrants it.

  12. Out of all the ones I've ridden, it would be the

    NJT: 139, 167, 67, 197, 559, 131/135 combo

Rockland Coaches: 11A (Spring Valley branch), 11X, 20

    DeCamp: 32/44, 66R

Lakeland: 46 (Route 46 Direct), 46/80-Newton Branch, Route 80-Lower Manhattan Route

    Ameribus: 20/84

    Montgomery & Westside: 440 Shopper

  13. Weehawken - You have/had (not sure nowadays) a few large employers based there, namely UBS..  With the 64/68 rush hour routes, remember, Howell garage parks their buses during the day at the Weehawken lot next to the light rail.

I noticed that and agree... I paid the $39 once just to ride the 319 about five years ago..

The round trip is $42, but for one way, you're better getting separate tickets (one for NYC-Toms River and one for Toms River-NJ) Should come out cheaper and if you're lucky, they might not ask why you're not off at Toms River.

  14.

During the command era buses went to Flatlands & E.94th.

Since then it pretty much streamlined over to Williams Ave.

No.. Absolutely no need to extend the B103 to Spring Creek Towers.

The B82/83/84 do just fine servicing Spring Creek and the towers.

If anything B84 needs extension to Canarsie.

Would you put the B84 within subway-fare control as with the B42?

  15. Enter Lakeland :)

Actually, that raised a question: Why doesn't Lakeland do non-peak trips via Route 202 between Boonton and Wayne? The Montclair-Boontons trains that run along that road neither operate outside rush hours nor provide direct access to Penn Station. Added to that, the 871 only serves Route 202 every three hours. Or does the lack of service in itself answer my question?

  16.

Since it's a snow day (for the next couple of days) and I'm home, my mind went wandering.

I've thought about the scenario of Rockland Coaches eventually dissolving, and what the outfall may be.

Here is my list - this is just purely speculation and entertainment:

    NJ Transit:

155 - Extended to New Milford via River Road/Boulevard (replaces 21)
165 - extended to Spring Valley.  11A trips become 165R trips.
    174 - Westwood-Montvale-Harrington Park-New York PABT via Knickerbocker Road (replaces 14)
184 - Westwood/Northvale-New York GWB via Tenafly Road (replaces 84)
    185 - Westwood-New York GWB (replaces 11C - truncate at Westwood)
170 - West Nyack-New York PABT (replaces 20, no changes)
179 - West Nyack-New York both terminals via Route 9W (replaces 9, reroute and truncate at Palisades Center).

What garages would cover all that...????  IDK, but Oradell is pretty much maxed out at peak.  They could take on more work on the weekends though.  Maybe spread across Oradell, Meadowlands and Market Street.  Or NJ Transit buys the Westwood Garage.  Again - it's fun to dream!

45/46/47/49 and 9/11A Stony Point/Haverstraw legs go to Short Line.

Saddle River Tours' Ameribus operates the 11C and the 20/84, so where ShortLine and Oradell are not viable options on their own, Ameribus would be next.
