I live all the way out by Wading River. When phase 1 starts for me, that will be fun getting into Hillside. KO on the weekends wont be bad at all tho. Wish it was the other way around tho. KO on Wednesday and Hillside on the weekend. Way less LI traffic going into Queens early morning. What time does the Hillside class start this Phase 1?

Get use to traveling.. How about Wading River all the to West Side Yard 5 days a week with 12 am start.

    Afternoon,

Those that work at LIRR, does this proposed restructuring plan affect the hiring of engineers?  I know it has been said that the department is short, but I figured I ask to possibly remove doubt.

    Thanks!

Maybe, maybe not. We don’t know anything. It’s still early.

I'd like to take a vacation this year but not knowing when I will be called for the Phase 1 test makes me hesitant to book anything. How have others handled this? Is it just best to forego making any plans indefinitely?

Either you take a short vacation to be local or don’t take one at all until you know where you stand. How much do you want this career?

    Good afternoon everyone,

I have been reading this forum for a little bit now, but just decided to sign up.  I'm currently a federal employee, but looking to get into the railroad industry (either city or lirr).  Has anyone applied for the most recent LIRR locomotive engineer trainee position?  I submitted my application on 11/27/18, and i was wondering if others here applied to this opening as well? If so, have you heard anything ?

    Thank you,

    -Nick

Welcome aboard . It will take some time .

It's crazy. I'd like to work a relief day now and then...they need to slow it down lol

I honestly don’t know why they’re hiring so much. They already have just about 20 people hanging each day. I  don’t see this huge retirement coming that soon. Same with the Engineers with 2 or more Lone Rangers . ESA isn’t nowhere near done.  We will see

I’m aware but I’m a B/O they hammer us with trips, mta has a strict attendance policy all around, 5 instances in 1 year & your on sick control & they don’t let use take days off unless it’s 90 days in advance, do you think I should notify lirr during my orientation interview ? On the application it says give attendance & discipline records “ at your earliest convience “?

    Those solely up to you.

My guess is that LIRR has no access to those records, they treat NYCT as just another external employer. But the reality is that if you have attendance issues, this might not be the job for you. They are really, really strict about attendance. They don't care if your car got a flat tire, they don't care that your subway was late, they don't care if there's a foot of snow on the ground, and they don't care that there are no LIRR trains scheduled to get you to your report location on time...if you don't show up, or you show up late, you will lose your job (while on probation, anyway).

Well the no LIRR trains to get you to your report time isn’t your fault. A late or canceled legal deadhead is their problem not yours. But I agree with everything else you said.

I am a current employee with NYCT can LIRR disqualify you if you have poor attendance record with transit ?

I don’t know. They probably will look into your past or they probably won’t. I don’t mean to get into your business but I hope there was a reasonable explanation for your poor attendance. Reporting for jobs at the RR are on a different level from Transit. Your first year will not be easy.

  9. Just a little tip for people who are going through the early process of becoming AC’s. Prepare yourself develop good study habits because after you think Signals and Definitions was the hard part , it gets even tougher for book of rules, slightly easier for air brakes and  fares . But all those weeks , you must study and study everything they give you. I’m not going to go into qualifying because that’s a whole other new ball game. But you get the picture.

Good luck everyone and it’s worth your time and effort. It’s a great job.

Take the job that is Guaranteed.

you’re time towards retirement starts the day you start with MNR, and it rolls over to LIRR if you get called for that.

MNR WILL NOT IMPEDE YOU BEING HIRED BY THE LIRR.

Retirement , just like you said does start that day. But seniority is king over retirement at either LIRR or MMR. If you hire on one and go to the other RR. You lose seniority. Which can control the jobs you want, vacations you want and more importantly money. I advise you just choose one and stick with it.

so sorry to bother, but it seems like I can’t get this question answered.... how long before they put you in a class do you do medical and background checks?!

You can’t get no answer because there isn’t one. The RR moves at their own pace when it comes to hiring. It could be quick or it can take some time. Just be patient

I just wanted to say that although i passed the S&D exam with a 100%, something happened today that really put a really bad taste in my mouth. I really wish i can share it with everyone, but it would be totally out of line to post it on a public form. It really has me enraged!

Share it.. It couldn’t hurt. Most of us seen and heard it all.

Still waiting to hear from Sterling....... And waiting..... and waiting.....and waiting........ Did anybody who passed the S&D test in May hear anything yet? I’m fully committed to this opportunity and it’ll be nice to have some confirmation that I’m moving forward. They need to start vetting me soon if I’m gonna make the August class, right?

No , you can be put in the August class in a weeks span.

I agree. Personally, I think the method of testing for the definitions, the verbatim memorization of close to 100 multi sentence definitions and indications is ridiculous, and isn’t necessarily a true indication of how good someone will be at the job. They’re missing out on a lot of good people who got a word or two wrong here and there, or referred to a “locomotive” as an “engine”.

Nope.. it’s been that way for years . You either make the cut by putting time in too get it down or you don’t.
