  1. Ok is a drivers license required for this job? I don't have one right now but I don't have any dwi or dui's.

I got the email yesterday to come on the 10th of February .Just finished my probation at transit. And the drivers license issue wasn't a real big deal as long as I had no dwi dui's .Can't believe I got the call!

Yes you need a valid driving licence.
  2. Reading through the forum. I see that some got the S&D booklet the same day. What are the chances that they don't give it out that day?? I only ask because the interviewer said "if all is well and you pass the background check, you will get a email inviting you back for the S&D!". I replied "thank you very much and you have yourself a great day". Then I saw about 2 people that stuck around after the they went before. Not sure if they were waiting for the train or just waiting to get picked up. But nervous and excited that this part is over with. I know this is just the beginning. Interviewer said " don't be nervous. You made it further than most"

You receive the booklet when your invited to the overview. Just keep your eye on your email both regular and junk mail.
  3. Got the invitation via email the day after Christmas for the open house. Excited and look forward to the testing. Been applying for the last 3 years now. A little history on my background. i'm 32 years old. I have a degree in Architecture. Currently work the overnight shift as a Technical Lead Coordinator for private financial firm (ROUND BLUE LOGO). for the last 10 years. I had plenty of moving violations back when I was younger. Nothing major. Tinted windows, muffler ticket, bad tailight or head light. All paid. No speeding or stop signs. I had a 2 traffice device tickets when I was 19. One for ezpass lane. Did'nt realize I was in the lane at the verrazano bridge and no left turn when I was doing a delivery for a previous employer (it was the first time i ever drove to the city). Been pretty good. so far. I got a bus lane ticket in 2013. Two weeks prior to the incident, they changed the signage. Meanwhile I drove the same route for the last 5-6 years. Well At least thats what the officer said in court, When the judge asked him if its true. Still paid the ticket though. I know I made my fair share of mistakes in the past, I have a family now and have matured. Good luck guys!

Good luck! Its good career. Be very clear about those violations. They could be a problem.
  4. yeah if those that applied are already being called then i pretty much feel screwed already. my background without going into to much detail is a bachelors degree/5+yrs management experience/currently employed with nyc transit as a train operator/perfect criminal and ticket record/perfect credit/trade skills in construction, carpentry, auto repair, and i'm a minority. so for anyone that thinks they don't have preferential treatment for whoever is sadly mistaken (so far as my experience has been).

i have been applying for over 3 years and have never even been invited to open house/initial test, easily over 10 applications for all types of positions.

Its kind of weird but I never met anyone who came from Transit in the RR. I met many airline employees , a few CO's but no one from NYC Transit. I have a friend who is a BO and he gets the same results.I think much as has to do with you currently working for Transit. I don't see no other problem with your background.
  5. People who have worked in jobs that run 24/7 ,weekends and holidays are what the RR is attracted too. A majority including myself came from the airline industry. Locomotive Engineer is not a job for everybody that goes for any job in the RR. If you are a young guy who enjoys weekends with your friends or holidays with your family is very important to you. The RR isn't for you. Social life doesn't exist at the RR . Now IT jobs and most Engineering jobs run differently where its a likely a Mon-Fri schedule.Just some things to think about.

  6. Hey vinny, hope you don't mind me asking what your background is. I'd like to get an idea as to who the LIRR draws from its applicant pool.

@ LIRR 154: Stupid question(s), but is the open house invitation only for select applicants or is it open to everyone and if you have not received an invitation yet, is that an indication that you will not be given the chance to take the entrance exam either? Closing date is tomorrow, I wish they would just tell you people if they have not been selected like everyone else instead of making them linger in doubt...Thanks in advance, clearly I do not take rejection well...

Open house is for applicants invited only. Chances are you might not have been chosen. But I read your thread in the other RR.net forum and you seem you have a good background as far as education goes. I would keep applying to other positions as well as electrical engineering positions. Not everybody including myself got in the RR first try. Just keep applying and good luck.
  7. Hey vinny, was the email an invitation for an interview? I'm curious because I applied on the 17th, but I haven't heard from them thus far..I was under the impression that it usually takes a few months before getting a reply.

The email is an invitation to the open house. You have to pass the entrance cognitive test before you are ask for an interview. They don't invite all applicants. But also check your garbage mailbox
  8. Hello All,

I just got an email from the LIRR for the Locomotive engineer trainee position. Can any one give any information/ tips of what i need to know. Also what i Should expect to get this position?

    Regards,

    Vinny

Expect the unexpected and its a long road to get into just the beginning. If you don't have great study habits don't waste your time. Good Luck with the entrance exam and be specific when filling out the application. Don't leave nothing out.
  9. I don't see that much of a technical advance from the current M7's. Just sounds like alot a fluff. You don't want too much electrical and computer components on these cars as much as of the beating these cars take . It spells disaster , thats why its good to keep things a little simple.

  10. What to do with 2 Penn - Stony Brook tickets (1 left on a seat & 1 on the floor/walkway) of a Huntington train.....

Some poor bastard gotta be pissed off right now... Probably some college kid or something, with as early a train I take......

This is the third ticket that I have found this week, alone (the other was RON-Penn, peak ticket)....

    The carelessness....

Unused tickets are the least things I find on the train when I work on them. You will be surprised of the things they leave and the carelessness of them. The thing that blew my mind one time when I first started was a prosthetic leg.
  11. That still has nothing to do with them retiring the old cars though... The point still is that if you know that ridership continues to grow and you know the situation with the capital budget, then you don't retire those cars unless it's absolutely necessary. That's poor planning. Simple as that. It doesn't take rocket science to know that it will be years before monies are approved and new cars can actually be built. You can down vote me all you want but it's just common sense. Did the old cars have structural issues? If they didn't then you keep them in storage.

I agree with you here. For instance with the RR scrapping and retiring alot of the old diesel fleet here at the LIRR in which you can clearly see NYAR crusing with the old engines up and down the island hauling freight. This was the decision of managment liking the brand new and crappy dual modes and getting rid of the work horses. Now there is a equipment shortage especially when it comes to the diesels when they had good working ones just pushed to the side and sold. You don't think those Geeps would of been good for scoot service? That was a coperate decision and not a RR one.
  12. That makes sense... Nevertheless, the cars have been quite filthy, not just the floors, but the chairs too... The New Haven Line seats are already becoming dirty and those are new cars.  Do you guys clean the seats with like soap and hot water or anything?? It may sound ridiculous to ask, but I think for the price we pay to ride Metro-North it isn't asking too much.  Of late I've been standing even when there is a seat when I use the Harlem line to go to Westchester because I'm skeeved out by the cleanliness.  I know on my express bus they must clean the chairs because they never look dirty.  The floors have been dirty due to the winter, but Yonkers does an excellent job with the buses they provide to serve us in Riverdale.

I don't know about Metro North but we usually have a EIC dock and crew that scrubs each car from top to bottom. Each car gets intense treatment. But with the chairs , people need to stop putting their feet on the chair. Each train cannot have their seats soap and water cleaned each night it takes to much time. Most trains if not a protect only spend 3 to 4 hours tops in the yard and then you have some that are all day runners never seeing a coach cleaner till the next day.
  13. Y'all already know how them maintenance crews are.

No it's not the crews at all. Haven't to deal with how winter and salt affects the train floors it's tough work. It's like mopping sand paper and it turns your mop and bucket water dirty black after two cars. Imagine having to mop and sweep and clean garbage on a 12 car train that is schedule to leave in 2 or 3 hours. It's not easy work .The crews are not lazy , harsh winters have these equipment taking a pounding both internally and mechanically. The shops have been busy.. The floors will be back to normal by the beginning of spring . It takes time to get up all the salt and grime so cut the coach cleaners a break. Unless your in car sweating your @$$ off trying to get these trains ready before the crews come to take it you don't know.....
  14. Dude the only LIRR lines that serve several queens stations at once are the Hempstead, Far rockaway ,& Long beach and port Washington with the exception of the port Washington how many LIers are on the Hempstead, Far rockaway and Long beach lines compared to the big fish KO, Huntington & Babylon/Montauk lines? exactly. Not much plus how many Babylon trains actually stop in eastern queens & how many main line trains stop in eastern queens ohh Jamaica doesn't count that's a transfer station Nuff said. The lines that do stop in eastern queens other than port Washington are lucky to even have offpeak service and are small fry not worth having any say in service within the city that logic of keeping fares inflatedly high is utter BS any who oppose lowering city fares need to STFU cause that's what keeps the dinky lines alive.

Lol money talks and there is more money out on the Island then Queens. You can think however you think but it's the people who are paying the commuter taxes and high LI taxes that the RR listen too. Have you ever rode the 7 train lately? Can you imagine the uprise if the RR lower their prices to cater to them or Metro North would for the Bronx residents? That's just the world we live in. Sad to say most of these commuters hate riding with their own fellow commuters , it would kill them to ride with the subway crowd. They feel if you want to ride the RR then pay what I pay.
  15. I think that the Elmhurst and Corona stations should be reopened to relieve crowding on the 7.

Also, I think the MTA should lower fares within NYC for MNRR and LIRR to equal the Subway fare or maybe $3, to encourage people to use the LIRR/MNR instead of the subways in order to relieve crowding. This would help for the Flushing and QBL Lines.

The commuter rails purpose is to serve the burbs and not the city. Now reopening Elmhurst is an idea that has been floating around since the community has shown interest but you better believe they will not lower their fares to subway standards. The pols and the people on LI will have a fit .
  16. The only way the East River Tunnels can be maintain properly is if the LIRR takes over. Amtrak doesn't have the backing , resources or man power to cover this kind of operation. Eventually with the ESA and a Sunnyside station and yard coming there in the future I won't be surprised if Amtrak is pushed

out as sole controller in that area.

  17. With the Belmont Stakes this weekend, I long held the idea that the LIRR could be using Belmont Park station better.  Being that the station is a six track eletric stub-termial that sits right smack next to a heavily congested parkway, I think it would be an ideal location for a park and ride of some sort for the LIRR.  Many other regional railraods have had successes with Park & Rides and the LIRR has few, if any, and I feel this would be an ideal location for them to start.

I've laid out my ideas and reasoning here: http://thelirrtoday.blogspot.com/2013/06/an-idea-for-better-utilization-of.html

There are some obstacles to overcome for a service like this to come to be, but maybe it should be something the LIRR should keep in the back of its mind going forward (i.e. when they're changing stuff up come ESA).

Let me know what you think.

It makes sense and it could be an option. It's been one of those ideas that's been floating around for a long time. But also the community has to make more noise as well. For instance the community in Elmhurst have been making some noise for the station to be reopened and the LIRR and MTA have noticed. I wouldn't be surprised if Elmhurst is reopened once we get more deeper in the ESA plans. I have read about some plans for developments for retail and entertainment mega project over there in Belmont which could be a even bigger push for the plan like yours.
