OH! really. That's interesting. Well I hope to get through with this position, I don't want to interact with passengers that much, also from the youtube vids I see where the conductors manually switch the tracks and have to walk on/over train lines.......'oh no baby what is you doing' -_- Driving the train seems more interesting.

Huh ?? Do more research on Lirr Engineers and Conductors before you seriously consider this position.

    Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum, but I have been following this fourm on the low ever since i attended the  A/C Trainee open house in Mid-February. I passed the Intial exams, and interviews. Then studied my butt off, and passed the signals and definitions exams, which was a sigh of relief. I feel like I did well on the panel interview. I was interveiwed by Linda Oliver and another gentlemen who I believe was the superintendent. It’s been exactly seventeen days, this is the third week, and I haven’t heard any feedback. Can anybody provide some kind of insight? I sent a thank you email on April 18, the day after the exam and interview. Ms. Oliver replied w/ a smiley face which made me feel very confident. But up until this point, I have received no feedback. I’ve thought about sending another email, but I don’t want to send a premature email and jeapordize anything. Also twenty people took the exam, only eight of us passed. So at this point I’m not quite sure. I would really appreciate it if somebody can give me some insight, before I send Ms. Oliver another email. Thanks.

Leave it alone. You’ll hear something. Believe me.

Attended the S&D Overview today. It’s time to start studying!! Wow, that’s a lot of material. The signal section looked a little more overwhelming than I expected.

Stick to it. Put time in and you can do it. It’s not hard , it’s all memorization.

    Good Luck

I wish you the best of luck. I would find it very stressful to go though 5 tests, Then after about 5-7 years of working they terminate your employment for not passing the conductor test. At my current job after 5 years cant get fired.

If I was in your shoes, I would have a plan B just in case. This job there are just too many varitables that may or may not get you terminated.

When I went, the LIRR staff was loyal to one another. But to new people coming in they approached everyone as like, they were better than you.

I will say in closing, LIRR ridership is going down, their On-Time perforamance sucks.  There is actually a lady in wantauge suing them for their lack of on-time performance.

I would say at the end of the open house I went to the washout rate was 80%. Out of 125 ppl, 30 passed. That is really not a good thing.

after signals and definations that will drop to  20 ppl

Really 125 ppl and at the end of the process the real number is 17 ppl that graduate.

This would be the right job for me, LIRR Usher at penn station @ 200,000.00 a year is more my speed.

I wish you the best of luck once again.

Good luck with that. Do you know what you have to do to become an usher? The steps. 200k  is seniority driven. I’m sorry to bust your bubble, but it takes years to reach that level.

I took the Asst. Conductor test

    1. The first test was vocab - This was easy.

    2. The next part was Cognitive Ability - This part was the worst part

    3. The third part was  Logic reasoning - Not bad

    4. The last part was flow charts

The moral here is you cant study for this test, you have to know someone in the LIRR TO PASS TEST. They will be the only ones that would give you the right way to answer the questions on the second part. This is to I think sucumvent nepitisem

So you pass this pre testing and get this job. Then there is a second test signals and definitions, then you pass that.

Then you have 2 years till you have to pass the conductors test. If you fail the conducters test 7 times you loose your job. Good luck.

If you have a family you shouldnt take that risk. I also would put on the application that your unable to work weekends or nights.

You also will have to call in to work everyday for a shift. If it is 3am in southhampton you have to drive yourself there. Have fun.

This is not the best job in the LIRR system. It is a job that at every corner they are looking for reasons to fire you in the first 12 months.

please i know you see online their saleries, but those are poeple that got in under the easy test.

Anybody looking to become an AC , disregard any information you read above. Ask a real conductor for real info like myself,CGeorge and others. Ask DreNYC for any Engineer info.  Not hearsay where it will lead you thinking wrong. No they don’t look to fire you since they spent so much time and money on you during training. There’s no easy test. Everyone has to qualify on the same PC and BOR exams. How do you know it’s not the best job when you’re going through the beginning process? Every craft in the LIRR has pros and cons. It’s what you make out of it matters the most.

Is anyone taking the beginner exams this Friday? Anyone have any advice for those taking the tests? I have taken the MTA Operator and MTA police exams and passed both. I'm hoping these exams are similar to those.

Not even close. You’re going to deal with flow charts and all kind of goodies. It’s not hard , but it throws people off.

There was a guy here who went all the way to interview waited almost a year and not a word. So he kept studying only to get a thank you applying, you have not been selected. Sucks. Who knows what they’re looking for.

Yup it happened to me . They turned me down for Engineer but hired me as a Conductor. Go figure.

Sorry all, one last question: I only have my interim Drivers License at the moment (paper copy given by NYC DMV) as I had to switch my out of state license. Will this be acceptable for the open house? I can also bring any other documents necessary to prove I am who the license says obviously. Thanks in advance!

Should be no problem. Just make sure you bring possibly your old license with your face on it.

How bad is the schedule? Are you all over the place with days and times, or do you settle in eventually? Also, I’ve heard varying accounts on the pay. Once qualified, do you go straight to 100% hourly rate, or do you still have to go through the yearly progression. Also, the $10 bonus for qualified engineers, is that hourly or daily? Either way, congrats on making it through!

You only go straight to 100% after qualifying if you’re an internal employee meaning you came from a different craft with time. You will be going through the progression rate. Also the $10 bonus is only for qualified conductors.
