  1. Everybody who passed the S&D and had their panel just have to be a little patient. They are going to need a good number of Engineers . Just becuase they have alot of classes doesn't mean everyone in those classes are making pass phase 2. The RR know this so instead of having a few they are trying to build up to qouta before the ESA opens. As long as you didn't receive no letter. Be patient and good luck.

  2. we started with 12. One guy dropped a few weeks ago. He passed his first 2 exams then he opted out. He was pretty good too. Personal reasons so now we have 11. 11 passed the midterms. So hopefully 11 to the end. The odds of this much getting to the end are low. Usually for a class of 12. By the halfway mark they lose half. It's a 50-60% graduation rate. Everyone in my class seems to want the job. So do i. Lol. Sleep study work.

Good to hear Dre . Keep studying and stay drawing those PC's.
  3. If they started a whole lottery pool system , I call bs and its not fair to people who put their life on the side to study for 5 weeks. This is new if this is the case. To continue hiring just so you can fill a candidate pool is going to hurt them in the long run. The word will get out and people would not want to apply.I hope this is not the case but if it is , its not a good look. Good luck to everyone..

  4. Basically you will be interviewed by an hr rep and a gangforeman. Its really straight forward. Probation can be tough since you won't own a job for a while and they can stick you any where they want . Also you will see garbage and all sorts of mess you have never seen before. Its a shock at first and the work is not easy , but you will get use to it. Probation is a year. When it comes to background check , they check everything and I mean everything. Don't lie or leave nothing out.

  5. Just wondering, according to the current posting:  "Upon commencement of Phase 2, current LIRR employees will officially transfer to the position of Engineer Trainee."

Doesn't phase 2 commencement lead to engineer or is there more training after that?

Thats for internal employees . Internal employees who pass phase 1 will leave their current craft and will become Engineer trainees.
  6. Rt Mason there's nothing wrong with Engineer and I wish you good luck. But all I'm just bringing out is the only thing people see from the outside is Conductors and Engineers. But there is so much going on not in the public eye to keep this RR moving. Crafts people never knew that exists. That's why I always advice people who want a career in the RR to start from the bottom and research what direction you want to go. Alot of people here started like that. You'll be surprised the amount of craft changes because some people started one route but didn't like it. Anyway good luck and I hope you the best.

  7. LIRR 154, I'm curious to know what other jobs pay better than the engineer position?

Also, I was told by an employee that Car Inspector was the best job on the railroad due to the ease of physical exertion and the opportunities for overtime.  Would you agree?  If not, which position do you think is the best on the rails?

Engineer is tops, in my opinion.I am still waiting on a call from HR as to whether I will be moving on to Phase I.  I was hoping a class would start at the end of November, but I'm starting to doubt that notion.

In the meantime, I will continue to review my signals and definitions, and wait patiently.

Car repairmen and Car inspectors are just about the same. Road car inspectors are also car repairmen. These two I would say are the best crafts in the RR followed by Machinists as far as money goes , overtime and better quality of life. You know how many Engineers I know say if they could do it over again they would of went for the car repairmen program? All of these crafts can lead to Mof E gang forman where the money is even better.
  8. I would LOVE an opportunity to become a locomotive engineer for the LIRR. I've put in applications for a few years now.....but I hope to get a "golden ticket" for the orientation in the future!

Apply for Cam or Oiler now and start from the bottom. Its best to start out that way in RR because most of the time your mind changes when you see other crafts there that may catch your interest. The RR has many departments that pay good or even better than Engineer . Get your foot in the door and thats when you get a clearer idea what you want to do.

  9. so far it was exciting and interesting. Instructor was cool and had our attention on him. As far as phase 1. It's ALL "BOOK OF RULES". we're having our first quiz tomorrow morning. Class starts 630a sharp at Babylon Yard. It's a lot of information. If you guys think the signals and definitions are hard. Wait till you see the Book of Rules and Timetables and Special Instructions binders. We're not even done with getting everything. So far it's 12 of us in the class and 12 spots available for Phase 2. It's up to us if we want to put the work in. The job is practically ours. It'll be ashame if one of us doesn't put the weight in to study hard.

Good luck and study . Have fun in the simulator building as well. Its interesting.
  10. All right folks. Just an FYI. Made it into the August class for phase 1. Excited and anxious to start. Going for my medical and PAS on Wednesday. What does a PAS consist of? What should I expect? And do I wear comfortable clothing? Dress up? They said this is the only place I can dress with sneakers.

Everything . They check everything. You also will be climbing up and down a platform same as a you would a train.
  11. That's fine. I'll be breaking even for the first 2 years.

Believe me you say that now, but if you make it to the beginning lets say of phase two and your working crazy schedules with a qualified Engineer at the same time your brain is splitting from drawing PC's 10-20 times a day of the RR and with the book of rules by verbatim you will be thinking a different tune. Thats union 101 , never sell out the unborn it causes division. Thats whats going on in the carmen union right now.
  12. No, it's top pay starting in the 4th year.

New Wage Progression for Employees Hired After February 25, 2015:

(Rates as of February 25, 2015)

    1st 365 days 60% $24.987

    2nd 365 days 80% $33.317

    3rd 365 days 90% $37.481

    After 1,095 days 100% $41.646

Either way it sucks. Thats a lot of work both studying and working . Once your qualified you should be awarded top pay.
  13. I'd be surprised if that was the case as I've seen people throughout the current process wearing glasses. If that eliminated you wouldn't they bring that up and flag people in the beginning so they didn't waste their time?

Your talking about the RR here. They are known for wasting peoples time and screwing people. Example A right here and I know a good amount more.
  14. How does the phase 1 work. I get its on my time, just trying to get a better understanding. Your given study material and come in when you can at least once a week to be tested on it? Does that sum it up or is there more to it?

Phase 1 is every Sat in KO all day and Hillside every Wednesday from 530 - 930 for 4 weeks.

Im sorry KO is Ronkonkoma .
