I know this is unrelated to the current topic, but why are the friction brakes on the NTTs so bad? You know a train with dead motor is coming from a mile away due to the insane brake screech. Are the friction brakes just not maintained well?

Define bad. A bad brake is one that doesn't work...

    The noise is normal.

  2. To add what RTO man said.

do not guess. If you are not 110% sure, ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Even if it seems obvious, be sure about what you’re doing.

as I mentioned, in another thread on this site, I was partnered with another XX, who was out less than I had been. He made a critical mistake and now his job is on the line.

because he wasn’t sure and he did not take all the steps.

Personal example, when I am given a skip order on the radio, I repeat it back to the person on the other end to ensure I have it exactly right.

My partner did radio in for an answer to his question, but he didn’t double check and his route knowledge was poor, another thing everyone should really have down pat, which caused him to run a red signal.

seriously, know where you are going.

also, try to help each other out as best you can.

I was in the middle of my door operations the other day, tower calls our train and my partner did not answer them. They are calling multiple times and he does nothing, waiting for me to talk to them even though I’m in the middle of closing down.

work with each other. There is a reason we call each other “partner”. It’s because we are. We’re a team, CR and TO. We need to be on the same page.

  3. Yeah, that was for the sake of access to the depot and yard.

why be stuck taking such a long walk around Broadway Junction?

(though when I’ve had to report to ENY Yard; I take the L and use the Bushwick Ave entrance. Quicker for me and I don’t have to climb all those stairs)

  4. So… last night, I was on the L. I was at my position at 8th avenue, waiting for my starting lights.

I’m in full uniform (minus my hat which has yet to come yet, it’s on backorder). MTA turtleneck, MTA jacket. Standing in the cab…

group of people walk up to me “uh, excuse us… do you work here? We have a question?”

I give the the “customer service” mode… but inside I was giving them the full “Sarcastic B!&$@ from Brooklyn”.

”no, I’m cosplaying as an employee…”

  5. (I am not directing this at Reasearcher, this is just me voicing my opinion on the subject)

… I hate “de-interlineing”. It actively makes the system worse.

Here’s the thing about the subway…

IT WAS BUILT TO BE INTERLINED.

That’s what it was designed to be., designed to do.

The through put of a line is controlled by its terminals. Having different terminals branching off a core trunk allows said trunk to have a HIGHER TPH than otherwise would be possible, because otherwise the terminals would limit the core capacity.

the other thing I never liked about the concept it that it doesn’t take the wants of the ridership into account.

You know why the A is still split at Rockaway Blvd?

Why the Q is the Brighton Local?

the F still rarely goes express in Brooklyn?

it’s because that’s how the riding public wants them to be.

    Ozone Park WANTS an express

    Brighton line Passengers WANT Broadway.

Carol Gardens/Gowanus/ Prospect Park area Culver Line passengers don’t want to transfer twice or ride backwards.

This is what the public wants, so this is what they get.

like, I will say this about Reasercher’s map… taking the Briadway off SAS… bad idea, because it removes the connection between SAS and the 63rd street line.

You’re removing the transfer to/from the F, which, speaking as someone who has actually been the conductor on trains on both lines through that station… is a VERY popular transfer. Going from Downtown Q to queens bound F and in reverse, Brooklyn bound F to 96th bound Q.

On a side note, this is now the most viewed topic in the forums. I guess alot of people want to be Conductors! :D

There are a lot of people who come in to just read this thread to see how things work and what the need to know. Often times it’s friends or family as well.

    on that note:

    hi mom!

  7. The site was created by Harry.

It doesn’t really matter who started it and/or why they did so.

that being said, I am not going to come down on Texas for not connecting the dots about the fact I’m RTO (I am NEVER going to call it “Service Delivery” thank you very much”), they’re human. It happens.

I made it into the Oct 3rd class thank you to everyone that helped me out! I have my schedule for Monday through Wednesday does anyone who has been through the training know if I'll be training Thur and Friday? I have an appointment Fri need to know if I have to reschedule.

Don't make any appointments for any weekdays for a while. You'll likely be on 1500-2300 shifts M-Th and 1700-0100 Friday. Plan to plan around that. They'll probably work you Thanksgiving too.  They'll put you in small classes of 10 or less and each class will have its own schedule... So that's why you only have the first three days so far.

When you work is can be awkward. My class actually started on Memorial Day, and a previous class started on Presidents Day, but when the 4th of July rolled around, they shifted our days off to give us a three day weekend. Mostly because until you are fully qualified, you can't work if 238 is completely closed.  So as that week was my last class week and the start of my posting period, I ended up posting on a Saturday.

There is a whole thread on scholar car experience, but to give you the Reader's Digest version:

Monday will chart your course for the foreseeable future as it will decide what division you belong to.,, if they don't shove your entire class into one or the other. When I started, we were about 50 people. 20 slots were for the B division and the rest went to A. if they let you pick, it will be by list number. So as I had a higher number, I got to pick B.

Thursday you will get track safety qualified, you will get you your basic PPE (gloves, vest, safety glasses) and then they will walk you all down to Coney Island Yard.

There you will step over a 3rd rail, and then have to climb up and down the front of an R68 car (yes, everyone) twice. If you can't climb that car, and you are B division, you will get moved to A and given a second chance with an R62. Can't do that ether, you will have to resign.

Friday they will split your induction group into actual classes. my group of 50 went down to five classes of 10.  you will also be assigned your actual instructor TSSes for the class period.

Also, know that the 17-1 days are usually "Road Operations", going out and riding around, doing station stops with the train you've been working on that week. You will cut out all the doors on the train save for the pair closest to the conductor's position. The first week is usually just to get used to doing it for reals, but after that it will include identifying improper stops.

On these trips you will bring everything with you. If you are out and about and 1AM rolls around and you're not back in the yard yet due to some issue, you will be let off the train and told to go home. School car is 8 hours, HARD limit with one exception, 3rd rail jumper cable day... (shudders)

  9. Dude… chill.

first of all, until I actually want to say the early 2000s, the 3 ran only 9 car trains. This is one of those things that don’t get talked about a lot so it’s harder to get info, but I believe that it was something about the storage tracks in Lennox Yard that limited it.

as for today: the issue with the 3 and NTTs comes down to one thing:

    we call it “the shield”.

it’s a bit of metal meant to go over the door controls to prevent the conductor from opening the rear of the train at stations where the platforms are not long enough.

it is part of the A division conductor’s regular kit (so as a B division conductor I don’t have one)

the door controls for NTT trains are laid out completely differently and the existing shields do not work on them.

Whenever a 2 ends up being sent to Lennox Terminal, they skip 145th street.

The MTA would have to make thousands  of new ones for the 142/188. With the 262s coming… their hand is about to be forced.

  10. The 262s are in the preliminary phase of the order process and the 62s are still... functional.

And the R68s are still within the twilight years of the standard subway car useful life. They're only in their mid 30s and they try to get at least 40 years out of a subway car class, though I think the New Techs might push that more towards 50.

I mean, other than their cabs being claustrophobia inducing closets, the 68s aren't that bad.

  11. According to what I was taught in Schoolcar, if both panels in a single doorway are cut out, the train has to be taken out of service. TSS made a point of ensuring we check the other panel in the pair.

meanwhile a train with a completely isolated car can remain in service... Why not just have me isolate the car with the two busted panels and save the train?

That is very serious. If it is the former, then there may a defect in the tunnel that needs to be addressed. Might be a speed thing causing the train cars to jerk, or maybe a mechanical issue with the train car in question causing it to sway more than usual causing it to strike a tunnel wall.

quite serious... you would think that they would have said something.... But they told me nothing. Yeah, that was MY train.
