All these videos of highschoolers riding on top of the (7) train has me wondering what is the protocol for when motormen see this on approach on the adjacent track?

call it over the radio to the train in question, the T/O will then slowly bring the train to a stop.

  2. I think Google has somewhat wisely chosen not to let the algorithm support their stupidity. That and the fact that mobile game still has a lot of attention.

that being said… having them leave the gene pool is not something I would wish upon them… because by extension, you are wishing for someone to have to clean up after the fact.

  3. to be honest, Texas, there are a whole host of otherwise simple problems that require us to take a train out of service.

If I have both door panels in a single doorway cut out, we have to take the train out of service.

If the PA breaks. Out of Service.

if any of the train's circuit breakers trips twice, Out of Service.

So if the main breaking system on an NTT class train is offline, you know the train is gonna be out of service.

  4. The 262s are to replace the 62s. If you think we're cash strapped enough to not overhaul the 142s, what makes you think we can afford to junk rolling stock that's only halfway through it's useful life, leaving us to have to replace the entire mainline IRT fleet by the mid 2060s/2070s.

  5. They are not going to reconfigure the old BMT East for 10 car trains. Give that up already.

This is the thing with your ideas. They never consider how we operate.

For example. We would need to build a brand new car wash, as the wash at Canarsie Yard can't do 10 cars.

Many of the yard tracks at all three East yards would foul. At Canarsie, only the 5 yard tracks closest to the station platform could hold 10 at their current lengths.

East New York Shop can't hold 10 car trains and the building can't be lengthened.

We would need to completely rebuild multiple crew offices and towers. Canarsie, Metropolitan, Broadway Junction.

  6. that's called "Going BIE" (Brakes in Emergency), which skips the dynamic and slams on the friction breaks, other than that it won't happen because would never allow the trains to operate if that much of the dynamic system was offline that the whole train's out.

  7. I told a few of my trainers my outlook in life.

"the wisest person knows they know nothing."

I did have to argue with a few over... petty things.

One insisting the J GO was weekend only

the others who didn't know the transfer between 42nd Bryant Park and the Times Square-PABT complex existed.

"Nice you were able to call out all those trains, but some of them don't stop here."

    "Yes they do."

    "No..."

"There's a tunnel now, I've walked through it like, three times."

    (insert "surprised Pikachu Face")

  8. As someone who has now gotten her foot in the door…

1: no, you can’t program the the train to do that because that is now how the train works.

2: they don’t think we’re incompetent. They know we ca be making hundreds of stops a day. We get into rhythms and muscle memory is that. ONE station on ONE line is different.

(When the T/O accidentally over runs your board, one of the solutions RCC will give you is to open the train normally in the rear and key open the crew doors abreast the platform.they rarely ever give that order because we know we are trained to press both open button at the same time.)

which makes more sense for ONE stop? Your way or ours?

  9. Well, tomorrow is the day… we’re set loose. Posting time is here.

    14 lines, 14 days.

Pretty concerning that the right hand doesn't seem to know what the left hand is doing...I'd hope for better communication! And what do you mean the jumpers melted in your hand LOL?? That sounds terrifying!

What I mean is what I said. I’m a rather literal kinda girl.

the plastic that surrounds the metal pins that’s transfer the current were melting. I had to give it a rather good yank to ge my end off the third rail.

  10. So… today was … something else.

we report to PS 248 at 7AM. They bunch us into a class room, all 20 B division people from my induction group.

first sign this was going to be “one of those days” was an unfamiliar face. Long story short a miscommunication on the A division side resulted in on of thier guys ended up at pS248 instead of where his class was in the Bronx. He was allowed to join us for the day.

We spent all day calling the poor man “A Division Guy”.

so it’s 7AM… we’re all waiting… and waiting… and waiting… turns out one of the our instructor TSS got picked for a Random and was over at the MAC.

she didn’t get back till about 9:30.

we were supposed to be doing the jumper cables at 38th street yard, so we walked over to the D train at 25th avenue.

we’re waiting for the northbound D when the TSSs figure “we should call 38th, make sure they know we’re coming.”

only to be told the yard is under a GO and third rail power is off for two weeks.

So they diced “screw it, let’s just do it in Coney Island Yard”.

so we go to the other platform to get the D to CI, and then take the N to 86th to use the back entrance to the yard.

we’re crossing over between the platforms at Stillwell Avenue when we notice someone hanging caution tape on the top of the stairs to the N.

turns out there was another GO in our way…

we ended up taking the shuttle bus, who was nice enough to drop us off at the yard entrance.

we cross the yard and spend a good half an hour at the crew room waiting.

we are brought back outside and led to a train. Turns out it was “other than head car operations”.

the TSSs figure “let’s just use this train and bring the cables here.” We sat there a while; to the point many folks were nodding off.

they take us off the train and back to the tower for more waiting before we get told to take an hour for lunch.

come back and finally get to use the jumpers… which procced to melt in our hands.

and all of this was filled by a three hour long anti-terror lecture.

nothing quite like ending a long, physically exhausting day with an emotionally exhausting topic about the world we live in…

When did you get your posting schedule? My class starts posting on Wednesday still haven't received schedule

We got ours after the “right to know” stuff after we finished the midterms.

Damn some of those were old.
Really… any bio-hazard control instructional videos still out there made before medical science discovered how to treat and manage HIV really should not be shown anymore… triggered my long dormant aichmophobia (fear of sharp objects).

  12. Since Chris hasn't updated this in a while, I guess I will. The two of us have been in the same class, BTW.

While we have had a relatively straight forward experience, it hasn't been without it's moments, mostly from the other classes.

One of the IRT classes, someone dislocated their finger while dezoning. Another rolled their ankle climbing down.

Thursday was our yard practical test, on an R68A down in Coney Island Yard. 7 out of our class of 10 passed that test. To be able to continue, the three who did not pass have to retake it sometime in the coming weeks. The first go around you simply take the test with another class' TSSs. since there are two B division classes, we simply swapped. Four from the other group failed as well, for a total of 7 our of 20 who now need to do it with a Superintendent grading them.

Friday was our "pen and paper" mid term. Everyone passed that, thankfully. The retake for that replacing the 38 multiple choice questions with 38 write in answer questions on top of the 2 we already had.

We have off on Monday (meaning working Saturday because they moved our day off), for the 4th. On Tuesday, we have a 12 hour day that includes the Third rail jumper cable training course. Wednesday is our last class together. we meet at East New York Yard and go on one last Road Op trip. This Thursday... we are set loose.

Road Posting. actually working on passenger trains with passengers on them. It going to be amazing... just happens we all got assigned early AM report times. between 0500 and 0700. the exceptions for me are 7:45 on the A and an 8:30 on the L.

  13. Okay, lets look at this logically.

the R211s are going to be CBTC ready at launch.

They are supposed to be ready in time for the first phase of the 8th avenue Line to get CBTC.

That first phase is south of 59th street to High Street,

This would mean one of two possible things for the first trains on the 211 order.

They are straight up swapping out the R46s on the A and C.

Or they are going to go to Queens Blvd and the R160s on QB will take over the A and C.

The entire discussion about the B does nothing.

  14. I have a relative who works in the administration offices of a different city agency.

She does not have a high opinion of DCAS, to put it nicely.

My re-instatement letter came shoved in an envelope in such a way it was a small miracle it got to me at all.

Through running usually never actually means "every single train will through run."

There will still be terminating trains. Most major train stations in systems with through running have a mix.

Many of the through running plans I've seen call for Penn Station to be rebuilt to emphasize the through running services at the expense of the terminating ones. I distinctly remember one plan calling for the station to be split in such a way that only westbound trains could use the north half and eastbound trains use the south half. this would extend to the river tunnels as well, as tunnels 2 and 3 under the east river would have their directions reversed.

Meaning a westbound Empire connection train would have to run against traffic the whole way from Sunnyside Yard.

  16. Penn Station through running for the commuter railroads is, to be blunt, not happening any time soon.

there are a lot of details that often get skipped over.

For example, Amtrak. Despite owning the station, people forget it has intercity trains there as well and

many through running plans I've seen have completely forgotten the Empire Connection.

  17. Going to tell you now… if you really want this gig, get a REALLY big backpack. One that the over the shoulder straps could be taken off of or covered over in some fashion (required for walking on the tracks). They recommend a brand called Kaka.

That bag will get very full, very fast with a LOT of heavy stuff.

the training manual they gave out today is a good 2 inches thick. And this is the revised edit that takes the R32 and R42 out.

and we’re still not fully equipped, as we get more stuff on Monday.
