QuoteMTA worker suspended after calling out sick to attend Capitol riot
By David MeyerJanuary 8, 2021 | 3:57pm | Updated
A Metro-North worker called out sick to be part of the mob that stormed the US Capitol — and he has been suspended amid an FBI investigation into his role, The Post has learned.
Will Pepe, a laborer at Metro-North’s Brewster rail yard, is under investigation for participating in the mob that briefly halted Congress as it was certifying the election of President-elect Joe Biden, the MTA confirmed.
Pepe, 31, of Beacon, N.Y., called out sick Wednesday to attend the event, an MTA source said. He has been suspended without pay as the agency seeks to fire him.
“Effective immediately this individual has been suspended from Metro-North without pay and will be disciplined in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement pending an investigation,” MTA spokesman Ken Lovett said in a statement.
“This alleged conduct is abhorrent and goes against the values of Metro-North, New York and the nation.”
The seven-year MTA employee did not return a call for comment.

Queens judge denies business owner’s bid to delay Main Street busway in Flushing
By Mark Hallum Posted on January 5, 2021
A Queens Supreme Court judge has rejected a bid by business owners to waylay the city Department of Transportation’s (DOT) busway on Main Street in Flushing.
At first glance, it would seem the monthslong litigation was not more successful than any other attempts by mass transit naysayers to halt the city in their tracks when it comes to dedicating space to buses for improved commute times.
On Tuesday, court papers showed that the Article 78 petition, which put a temporary restraining order on the project, was summarily denied by Judge Kevin Kerrigan and DOT’s busway between Sanford Avenue and Northern Boulevard will remain in place under Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Better Buses Action Plan.
“Today’s decision is a huge victory for 150,000 bus riders across Queens and the Bronx. Citywide, judges have now ruled decisively that when riders win well-deserved priority on busy streets, opponents can’t sue and get their way,” Riders Alliance Senior Organizer Jolyse Race said on Jan. 5. “Just as Trump and his supporters can’t overturn the vote, neither can courts ‘invade the province’ of transportation policymakers on behalf of a few rich NIMBYs.”
The Flushing Chinese Business Association and attorney Randall Eng launched the suit over the summer claiming there had been little input from the community and charging that the majority of foot traffic along the commercial corridor got the via private auto.
“It’s not a final disposition, he has simply vacated the temporary restraining order and denied a preliminary injunction,” Eng explained. “Our Article 78 proceeding has not been dismissed, he must decide that. So it is still open, but he has denied to provisional relief that we sought. He denied a preliminary injunction that would have been in place until the matter was decided.”
Eng, however, said this is not over depending on how far his client planned to go, in which case it would head to an appeals court.
“This ruling is more than just good news for the 150,000 New Yorkers who will use the Flushing Main Street busway every day,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “It’s a victory for everyone who believes that mass transit is the future of this city and the engine of our economic recovery. New York City is proud to offer safe, reliable and fast transit options for riders in Queens and across the five boroughs, and we look forward to building on this success with even more Better Buses initiatives this coming year.”
Judge Kerrigan was not completely convinced that the busway should proceed based on the traffic maps provided to him by the city, as his concluding remarks indicate.
“How efficacious the Busway player will be or what precisely its impact will be upon the community, if any, is presently unknown. Although petitioners have not shown that the determination to implement the Busway plan was made arbitrarily and irrationally, and thus have failed to demonstrate a likelihood of success on the merits of their article 78 petition, looking at the proposed new traffic maps does make this court wonder whether the plan, as currently drawn, is a wise one,” the final paragraph read.
Kerrigan’s comments regarding these doubts about the plan itself were admittedly irrelevant, the statement reads.

London Underground runs first tube trains on the Northern line extension
Posted on 4th January 2021
Tube trains have made their first test trips along the Northern line extension to Battersea over the Christmas break.
The Northern line passenger trains entered the new 3.2km tunnels at Kennington, travelling through the newly constructed step-plate junction that connects the existing Northern line tunnels to the extension. The trains then continued to Nine Elms Tube station before arriving at the extension’s second new station at Battersea Power Station. They then turned around using the new crossover junction to complete the journey back to Kennington.
Battery-powered engineering trains have travelled through the Northern Line extension since last Summer, but this was the first trial of a powered passenger train down the tunnels.
Stuart Harvey, TfL’s Director of Major Projects, said: “Seeing a Northern line train travelling through the extension for the first time is a really significant milestone and demonstrates the commitment of our brilliant team who have been working so hard during such a challenging year.”
Work to finish the extension is now focused on completing necessary signalling software upgrades and the fit-out of the two new stations – at Nine Elms and Battersea. The extension was due to open last year remains on target for its revised completion in the autumn of this year.
The £1.2 billion extension is being funded by a mix of developer contributions and borrowing against future business rates to be collected from the Nine Elms Enterprise Zone that was set up in 2016 and due to exist for 25 years.

MTA board member reportedly accused of helping rich pals get COVID-19 vaccine
An MTA board member has reportedly been helping older wealthy friends obtain COVID-19 vaccinations at a Florida nursing home.
David S. Mack, a real-estate developer from Long Island, used his influence as a board member of affiliates of the MorseLife system of long-term care homes to obtain the shots, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
Mack and others associated with the MorseLife system have offered the shots to elderly and wealthy Floridians — bumping them to the front of the line while other people wait their turn, the newspaper said.
Mack’s influence with the high-end MorseLife homes is such that a street on the company’s campus in West Palm Beach, Fla. is named for him.
Members of the Palm Beach Country Club — located in one of the city’s wealthiest areas, near the former Palm Beach home of the Kennedy family — have been offered the vaccine, the Washington Post said.
Mack is president of the Palm Beach Country Club Foundation, which since 2016 has given at least $75,000 to MorseLife Home Care Inc., according to IRS public records checked by the Daily News.
Federal officials have recommended giving priority for vaccines to front-line medical workers. But Florida has set aside that guidance, and prioritized elderly people.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has not been clear about the rules, The Washington Post said — and other news outlets have reported the vaccine has not been available at some Florida long-term care facilities.
A spokesman for Mack told the Post the vaccinations were “conducted in full accordance” with an executive order DeSantis had issued.
Mack was appointed to the MTA board by Gov. Cuomo in 2019 at the recommendation of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. He serves on MTA committees of interest to Long Islanders — including those devoted to the Long Island Rail Road and the MTA Bridges and Tunnels. His term ends in June.

I thought it was just her ID and numbers.
Some years ago, I was working as a parking attendant for an event and stationed at the employees-only lot. We were given clear instructions that only employees for the event were allowed.
One of these SBA/PBA dupes thought he and his family could park there because he had that membership card. We spent 5 minutes arguing about it, and he insisted he could park anywhere he wanted to, total bs.
So I've never had sympathy for these jackasses.

No it isn't actually correct; far from it..... What they have illustrated as far as that goes is dead wrong.... Eastbound M60's aren't turning off the bridge at 21st street. Stop it.
Yeah, and the SBS stop is still colored blue, even though they changed the color of the M60 line on the map to orange

The problem is that they also forgot to put the stop on the northbound side. They separated the stops at 82 Street but not at 29 Street.
......And it turns out the westbound M60 has gone back to its original stop by the square on Hoyt Avenue, so there is no point at all in having that little deviation.

I'm sure this was mentioned before, but whatever happened to the new subway cars on the line? I have used it twice in the last few weeks, and only see the really old, decrepit cars. Which line were they sent to and why?
The R160s went to Jamaica for CBTC. Only some sets remained, and those were swapped out with slightly newer R160s.

That routing is actually correct, eastbound M60's are still detoured off Astoria Blvd since is still working on the station and blocking the bus stop.

Saw 2926 out today. Somehow that bus is still labeled for NYCB, as it was when it was 7426, despite never crossing over at any point in its post-PBL service history (to my knowledge).
I actually caught it yesterday. I didn't realize it until I was flipping through my pics. I still can't believe they have it running. 2204 and 2209 are the oldest buses in the system now, and then come the 2800s and 2900s.

Nice shots.
What is it with so many of the 9600's having non-functioning front signs? The 9500's don't seem to have nearly the same problem with their signs.
See, I assumed that this was because of their impending doom, where they just don't bother either a) repair the signs or b) they don't use them anymore......but I also saw some NABIs and even New Flyers with no signs; I have no clue, nor do I have any sources or inside info about NJT to know if the garages are doing sub-par maintenance, if there's not a lot of money, or if it's something else.
In that photo, 20801 doesn't have the sign on, and neither did these two NABIs:

I'll be glad to kill him the legal way by turning on the juice to the electric chair or turn the little dial for the deadly chemicals to go into him. Does that sound like a liberal agenda? I stated this wish of mine in my first post on this subject.
What kind of stupid shit on the job?
When was the last time a drunk transit employee killed somebody during the performance of his/her duties? Should this happen, he/she deserves exactly what the justice system dictates. Because in the court of public opinion, 1 transit worker guilty = all transit workers guilty. Makes the innocent look bad. I know, I went thru a lot of shit after Robert Ray.
I ask one more time......is that a liberal agenda to lock them up/capital punishment? A liberal says "No jail, slap on the wrist". Not me!
Again, do it yourself, tough guy. Why wait on a broken justice system?
You're all talk but no walk.

ROTFLMAO. You are the one challenging me! I have nothing to prove. Once they decide he's insane, the Gables family will not get justice.
One question, do you think a skell who sets fire to a subway car (even if he killed somebody or not) is a sane person?
Yes, I do. He absolutely deserves to be in prison for a long time.....But you're already jumping to conclusions.
Again, if you're that upset about the liberal agenda, then go out and kill the guy yourself. But you can't, can you?
I also wish you showed this same attitude towards employees that do stupid shit on the job.
Next a drunk bus operator or TA employee kills someone on the job, I better see you with this same gung-ho kill-the-son-of-a-bitch attitude.

Get back to me when I am proved wrong after the criminal justice system runs its' course.
I want this guy fried in the electric chair (or administer the chemicals). An eye for an eye. As a retired train operator, I'll gladly administer the capital punishment, if we even had it in this state. But I have lived in this liberal bleeding heart cesspool of a state all my life. I know how it works. This guy gets sent to Bellevue for a psych exam and is found not to be competent to stand trial. Then what? Do they let him go to do the same or similar deeds again because our politicians want to reduce the jail population (so he'll assault/kill more transit workers) or do they lock him up for life anyway as a danger to himself/others? Our tax dollars at work! Exterminate this guy so the taxpayer doesn't have to support this POS, which will never happen.
Then do it yourself. If you're so worked up about it, go out and kill the guy yourself, tough guy.

This is a RFW video from the London Crossrail project, which is in its testing phase. The new line (to be called the Elizabeth line) runs west to east across London. The project has had its fair share of delays and overruns, but it will be a very important link, or at least might have been if COVID hadn't hit.

All this talk reminds me of this crappy little turn I spotted earlier this month. This is on Queens Boulevard between 63rd Avenue and 63rd Drive.
On that day, there were two large dumpsters (I want to say construction, but they were a lot bigger) on the striped parking zones. Location-wise, one was in the back of that truck in front of the Forever store (in the image below). The other one was a car ahead of the truck in front of Expo.
Now on the sidewalk next to that truck is a fire hydrant. I parked where that truck is because I was picking someone up. Just enough space for one car.
However, there was also a moving truck already parked on the street, next to the first dumpster in front of Chase.
This meant the actual street was getting blocked, so to go around it, cars and buses were going on the bike lane.
On top of that, some livery driver decided to wait for his passenger, but he had the brilliant idea of trying to park behind me......in the hydrant space that could fit ONE car, mine.
So, what wound up happening?
His car stuck out, which had the dual effect of blocking both the regular Queens Blvd street AND the exit.
What did drivers on the street and coming off the exit do?
They went on the bike lane AND on that walking space between the lane and the rest of Queens Blvd.
There were at least 10 cars that were flying through that space, including a USPS truck that almost hit a cyclist, and countless cars that kept crushing those plastic barriers.
