MTA Shuffles Cards & Cuts

The MTA has hired a czar to oversee the demise of the Metrocard and usher in the new swipeless SmartCard, The Post has learned. Amy Linden, a former executive at Parsons Brinckerhoff, an engineering firm that has been awarded MTA contracts, will be paid about $175,000 a year in the job. Also, sources confirmed that MTA officials want to remove the Bx14 bus line from the list of targets of the agency's next round of service cuts, which will go into effect midyear. The Post reported last month that the cut would strand 2,000 daily riders in the Country Club section of the Bronx.

Transit officials have been scrambling in the past several days to figure out ways to help the hardest-hit riders under cuts being considered. The proposed cuts would save about $129 million of a $400 million budget gap. The latest proposal would take the subway line off the cutting block and kill the . Instead of the , the would then run out to Middle Village, Queens, providing those riders direct access to Midtown. Other proposals include rerouting the B77 bus to make stops along the B75, route, which is slated for full elimination, and changing the B67 route to help riders stranded by B69 weekend service cuts, sources said.

MTA officials are also trying to find ways to re-instate some service along the M10 bus route which is also slated for elimination.

Bx10 was never in danger of losing anyhting other than late night service. Montefiore Hospital will now keep all 3 late night buses intact (Bx10, Bx28, Bx34). Original doomsday plan would have made the Bx28 the only late night bus in that area.

I like metrocards. RFID stuff is too prone to data theft & other mishaps.

Metrocards wouldn't be bad if they allowed Unlimited's to be refilled to cut down on the litter.

 

And if the MTA could allow for refilling ONLINE (not that big of deal) for just the added convenince...I like how you can add value to a Easy Pay Express PPR MetroCard online.
