Robert Bosco 0 Posted March 5, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2008 Is there a speed limit while operating a train? If so, I heard that some of the older model trains didn't have speedometers..any truth to that?

If so, I heard that some of the older model trains didn't have speedometers..any truth to that? Yes...look out the front at the Railfan window for small signs along the tunnel that say ## miles, these will tell you the posted speed limit. Some speed limits work WITH the signals (ie "timers"), and this goes much more in depth but the basic speed limits appear as little signs on the tunnel wall that say ## miles. Correct...Older model trains didn't have speedometers and many of the trains that WERE retrofitted with them have Bad order speedometers (aka they don't work right). Most T/O's just go by feel, or engine pitch (if operating equipment like an R32, R42, R62A, R68/A, etc.), in the case of timers some can even sometimes "count them off" because they're so familiar with the route they're operating hope all that helped... R32 3348 11 Posted March 5, 2008 Share #3 Posted March 5, 2008 Trains also have to slow down for timers, which are either Grade Time or Station time. Click here for more information.

And yes, a few of the oldies didn't have speedometers and so T/Os had to judge how fast they were moving the train. Sometimes its not as easy but as long as you know you can stop the train when coming into a station, you should be fine.
