Wheelchair-bound man praises MTA worker who pulled him from tracks at Harlem subway station

The disabled man who fell on the tracks at a Harlem subway station was reaching for a Bible when he mistakenly pressed the throttle on his motorized wheelchair and toppled over the ledge, he told the Daily News Saturday.

 

Bronx musician Jerome Billings, 60, thought it was the end.

 

"All these people were yelling, telling me that my hand was near the third rail," Billings said Saturday from his bed at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell. "I didn't know where the third rail was. I was petrified. I thought I was going to die.

 

"I'm laying down on the tracks and I can see the train coming," he said. "I can see the lights and I'm thinking, 'It's the last time I'll ever see anything.' I can feel the ground rumbling and I'm thinking I'm a goner."

 

Just then, heroic MTA worker Carlos Betancourt, 40, appeared on the tracks.
