R1103 Posted February 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2011 If you look at my name, you can see I'm a big fan of this car . Question - What exactaly are Axiflow fans, and what do they look like? Nycsubway says this car was given them in 1947.
Roadcruiser1 Posted February 7, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2011 Axiflow fans are regular fans that even we would have at home. It is just a term for a mechanical fan.
INDman Posted February 7, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 7, 2011 No, axiflow fans are a specific type of fan. When speaking of subway fans, they are the type that were found on all SMEE cars from the R15 up. As for R1 103, the fans look like those you would see in a SMEE car. Here is a photo of R1

Roadcruiser1 Posted February 7, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 7, 2011 Maybe it was used in testing to see if it could be used in future subway equipment. It sounds like the things they put in the R110A, and R110B to test new technologies.
INDman Posted February 7, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 7, 2011 It looks pretty nice if you ask me. Was this an experiment? If so what was the purpose? It was a test to see how the fans would work. Every car from the R15 thru the R38 has the same roof line as the R1's. Next time I get that chance, I'll take a photo to show what I mean. R1 103 still has the fans installed and they still work. SubwayGuy Posted February 7, 2011 Share #7 Posted February 7, 2011 strange...i thought i'd snapped a photo with the ol' cell phone inside 103 of the car where you could see the axiflows...but i guess not. a floor picture won't do much good here. Maybe I gotta start doing a better job documenting my life LOL
traildriver Posted February 12, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 12, 2011 All of those are axial fans--doesn't matter if they are open bladed or covered by shrouds or recessed into ceiling. What would be different would be a centrifugal fan, which is of the "squirrel-cage" design.
