Three day trip to Gothenburg

Recommended Posts

During the weekend, October 4th-6th, some friends and i went down to Gothenburg to do some tram and train spotting. I got a total of 70 pictures during these three days, but i have selected only the best. Enjoy!

We start of with October 4th, the day we arrived.

1. One of the few left-hand traffic cars remaining in Gothenburg.

2. That car is coupled with this one, another type M25. They were used in multiple like this on the Långedrag line up to the 90's.

3. A work car which seems to have an identity crisis. It has the Gothenburg logo on the sides, but it has the Norrköping logo on the front.

4. One of the rarest cars in the city. Only two of these are preserved as far as i know, and only one is in Gothenburg.

5. After taking some shots in the car barn we went out to the central station to pick up some more friends, giving us time to do some spotting aswell. First out, a train of old X11 commuter cars.

6. Then we got a surprise as this rolled in. Blue Rc3 engines are becomming a rarity.

7. And then, right on time, our friends train arrived.

8. That same night we had dinner in one of the cars, out on the line. A great way to end the day.

Anyway, now on to October 5th. This day most of the group went to the Liseberg amusement park. I however thought it was funnier to ride the trams as there was nothing of interest at Liseberg, so i left the park after about an hour or so and rejoined the group a couple of hours later.

During that time though i got most of those 70 pictures. And here they come.

1. A new Volvo hybrid outside one of the GS car barns.

2. A train of M29 and M28 cars.

3. M31 out in Angered.

4. One of the problematic Italian built M32s, also in Angered.

5. Going underground.

6. The NSB train to Oslo.

1380543_650273688326276_1325357122_n.jpg

7. Another N29/M28 train, this time at Stockholmsgatan(Stockholm street).

1379803_650260321660946_740510835_n.jpg

8. Then we took this train back to Svingeln to grab some lunch.

9. And when we got there we caught a "celebrity" albeit with the wrong line number. The Kortedala tram.

10. After lunch we went to Liseberg. Like i said, i didn't stay very long. The first shot i got after i left was the train i took from the Liseberg stop.

11. I got of the tram at Brunnsparken which, as far as i can tell, was the largest junction in the city, making shots like this possible.

1385326_650260968327548_1768341215_n.jpg

12. While walking from one of the platforms to another i caught this bus which i thought was a nice bonus.

1381409_650275508326094_1514256579_n.jpg

13. And here comes my tram.

14. After changing to line 1 i went down to Tynnered and switched to this train.

1379552_650261214994190_1936680084_n.jpg

15. I took that tram to Wavrinskys Plats(Wavrinsky's place) where i switched lines again, this time to line 6. While i waited though i caught this:

Gothenburg is the only city in Sweden that has double-bending(?) buses.

16. After catching that bus though, my tram arrived. I took this one all the way to Kortedala/Aprilgatan.

1378591_650261321660846_218966079_n.jpg

17. I then switched tram and went back along line 6 down to Gamelstadstorget.

18. There, at Gamelstadstorget, i switched to line 9 an went to the central station.

19. It got dark rather quickly after that when i boarded line 1 to Östra Sjukhuset(East hospital). The shot is taken at the end of the line, after the driver changed destination.

20. At the East Hospital stop though i grabbed some shots of the buses that i could find. This one, Black Express, left shortly after i took the pic.

21. 515 however had just arrived when i caught it.

1378852_650275478326097_792034414_n.jpg

22. This Volvo was just standing there without a driver, waiting to depart...

1385807_650275484992763_1643471657_n.jpg

23. After a while there my next tram arrived, line 5 to Länsmansgården.

1390518_650261621660816_1516091990_n.jpg

24. We then changed to a number 5, again, to go to Liseberg, again, to meet up with the rest of the gang.

1383730_650263494993962_105823819_n.jpg

25. After that though, we took a number 11 and went down to Saltholmen.

1375711_650264381660540_490247320_n.jpg

26. After having been to Saltholmen we turned and went towards Bergsjön. But along the way we switched to a number 7.

Then came 6th of October. The end of the trip. But after having a great start to the weekend, and a great time so far, why not finish it in a great way?

1. In the early hours of the morning we took car number 208, an old Långedrag car, out for a spin along the Långedrag line. And doesn't she look good?

1383354_650264838327161_1225310902_n.jpg

2. We went from one loop to another, turned the car around and went back for lunch. But not before i had taken this...

1380599_650265071660471_1084613434_n.jpg

3. And this shot.

1391984_650265078327137_1764296508_n.jpg

4. After lunch though it was nearly time to go home. So after a little discussion among the trip leaders, we went to the central station in style.

1378242_650265201660458_920334040_n.jpg

5. Trying to be a bit creative, i tried to get the car and the central stations main building in one shot. This was the best i got, but i like it.

1383857_650265254993786_1466106411_n.jpg

6. My train is on the left, and an arrival is on the right. It was time to go back home and back to reality.

1390724_650275771659401_790364113_n.jpg

7. But i did grab one last shot before boarding the train.

1383877_650275781659400_1716963812_n.jpg

All in all, it had been a great weekend despite the poor weather.

Thanks for watching, i hope you enjoyed the shots!

I meant in general.  I knew Estonia and Sweden intermingled a bit but that's awesome that they have such travel in between Oslo and Sweden.

Im still not sure i understand what you mean.

lol... Ay yay yay... Let me clarify... I was saying that I wasn't aware that there was so much travel between Norway and Sweden but that it was good that they have those transportation options conveniently available as I know that there is a decent amount of travel between Estonia and Sweden due to the proximity of Stockholm from Tallinn.

I was also commenting on how old the trams are in some cases and was shocked that they're still using some of them, but then again it's Europe.  It's the same thing in Italy, plus they build quality there so it's understandable to a degree.

Even though i was only in town to ride trams, i can highly recommend a visit to Gothenburg. I've never been to Malmö though, but i live in Stockholm. And trust me, at the moment it's not worth a visit if you're going trainspotting.

Oh, ok. I see what you mean. Well, there are trains from both Stockholm and Gothenburg going to Oslo, and trains from Östersund to Trondheim.

The oldest cars in these shots that are still in operation, the M28/M29 trains, have been meant to be replaced time and time again, but nothing has been able to replace them so far.

Well Malmö is like the "in" place after Stockholm from what I've heard and seen and Gotenburg is hot as well at the moment.  I could go for some Swedish meatballs and lingonberries right about now.  :D

They have the Ringlinjen, losely translated to Circle line, which runs museum cars from the central station to Liseberg and back during the summer sundays. This weekend though was a planned junior spotting trip within the Swedish Tramway Society so we had exclusive access to the Spårvägssällskapet Ringlinjens cars. If that's what you meant.

On the other hand, their tram network has been running non-stop since 1879.
