Operator turn around

Since traffic near the Lincoln Tunnel can change at any given moment and can subsequently affect roads for miles, I was wondering how operator tours are rotated. For example, an operator departs Paramus @ 5pm on the 163 and doesn't discharge passengers at Port Authority until 7-730, what will an operator do after that route? I can imagine it's difficult to schedule around that.

It depends on how his or her run is setup. Lets say that 163 is a tripper meaning a run in between two runs to ease the crowds. That 163 will them deadhead back to the garage. If its a swing shift he'll have a 1-5hr break between runs or its a straight run itll be all 163 or 163/166. Again it depends how the run is setup.

Yes, it depends on how the run is set up - for example, many runs cover trips on more than one line, such as the 162/163/164 or 157/167 - so that an operator may go in as a 164 local then out as a 162, deadhead back to the Port and do a 163P and finish.

To expand on this, during the PM peak, any operator going into the Port may as well use the paddle as something to chuckle at as he/she sits on 10th Avenue.  It is completely routine for an operator to go in as say a 165 local, be *scheduled* to arrive at 5:30 and leave at 5:45 as a T or P; get to the platform not till almost 7, and the starter will assign them as needed.
