azspeedbullet Posted February 3, 2015 Share #27 Posted February 3, 2015 Flushing Line Update Flushing Line #7 service remains suspended between 42nd St – Times Square and 74th St – Broadway. Limited Shuttle Train service is running between Flushing- Main St and 74th St and Shuttle Bus service is operating in Long Island City and between Long Island City and Jackson Heights providing service to closed stations. Crews have been hard at work since this morning trying to clear the rails of over a ¼” of ice which hampered service following an earlier incident involving a train at Queensboro Plaza. The ice was the result of freezing rain combined with falling temperatures that socked the Northern part of Queens with a quarter inch of liquid precipitation between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. while temperatures dropped 5 degrees as registered at nearby LaGuardia Airport. While attempting to clear the original incident, power had to be removed forcing all trains on the line to come to a halt, allowing the freezing rail to coat the rails. Tonight, test trains outfitted with scraper shoes have been running along the rails between Queenboro Plaza and 74th St – Broadway in an attempt to break up the build-up of ice. All cars that operate along the #7 line have been outfitted with scraper shoes in preparation for operating service along the entire line on Tuesday. We currently have no time table for the restoration of full service along the Flushing Line. dp142 Posted February 3, 2015 Share #31 Posted February 3, 2015 Do they add scrapers to 3rd rail shoes here in NYC to trains? I know this to be the practice on some railroads. At one time (not sure if they still do) Worktrains, because the are diesel powered, were outfitted with train shoes that looked like a large hairbrush underneath that would go along the contact rail in an effort to scrape the ice off.
