The Life of a Conductor? for those on the job

hey guys, what are the common mistakes conductors are doing now a days? how many trips do conductors do normally ? how often do conductors contact RCI or Dispatchers?

if things change such as a work train ahead or stalled train and now the train has to go Express ..does the T/O get notified? or the conductor? how do the conductor know whats the next stop if something like this happens if the T/O don't communicate something like this or make his own announcements to help the conductor?

Trips varies depending on line.

Conductors deal with Dispatchers every day, when they sign in (or out).

If things change and the train is rerouted, the T/O absolutely gets notified. We don't just take lineups that aren't regular without being notified. The RCC is supposed to communicate with both crew members to be clear that the reroute is understood to avoid the conductor pulling the cord at the next stop (thinking incorrectly a wrong route was taken). And, of course, announcements are to be made by the crew to inform the customers BEFORE leaving the station unless the reroute only becomes known after the train has left, which is to generally be avoided at all costs (IE if a train that just left 42nd St. is told to skip to 59th St., and then to 86th St., the crew should inform the RCC they've already left 42nd St. RCC should instruct that train to make the stop at 51st St., then 59th St., then make announcements that the next stop is 86th St.) Both crew members have radios and should be able to follow this conversation with the RCC, and a good crew will communicate amongst themselves to be sure everyone is on the same page. T/O can make announcements to the customers, this can be one way of the crew communicating amongst themselves on equipment that doesn't have an intercom, such as in the B Division. But always receive confirmation back that your partner is on the same page.

And pay attention to those radios and make sure you charge the batteries before you come to work.

You don't have to figure out your entire career before you start.

Get hired, take promotional tests, if you hear back, then decide whether or not you want to move up.

The longer you're here the more you'll learn about various titles. Talk to people in those titles, don't just go based on what you "hear" through the grapevine from people who haven't worked that title talking about their opinions of it.

Best way to do that is to meet people on the job who work in that title and hear it from them. But by taking the tests, at least you keep your options open. That title you didn't want when you took the test, you may want when it calls. And that title you swore you had to have, you may walk away from when it calls. You never know so keep the options open.

Just please come down here with the attitude of wanting to learn your job, learning your job, and being confident in your abilities once you've gotten to that point of knowledge (but real knowledge, not "know it all" knowledge) while still recognizing you can learn more. Nobody likes working with or for jumpy/nervous types who don't know their jobs. And nobody likes a slacker, or a person with a lousy attitude. Honestly, that's probably 1/2 of the battle down here. And the other 1/2 is coming to work.

Yup

Know it alls tend to prove they don't rather early on in their careers.

Even if they keep their jobs, they develope a reputation that is hard to outrun, and best believe supervision and management on a line looks at the files of the employees working on their line so they know who the ones to watch are....
