It’d be much easier, and probably way under budget, if they built it along commuter corridors first and then the Bakersfield to Merced route. But that would’ve required buying up the Altamont Commuter Express, building BART a new Transbay Tube, and taking over Metrolink. But that’s not what we did. Hi-Speed Rail was the only “green” project I voted against when I was a Californian - because of the cost; the unrealistic trip times (drive I-5 over the Tehachapis and see how steep it and the Ridge Route are), and the IOS going from a shit town to a University by way of Fresno. Only folks who plan worse than the rail authority is (MTA).
