florpglrop Posted February 10, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 10, 2021 I have been looking into the R142A Mosaic LCD, I think its a really interesting and unique display. I started making some cad designs to try to replicate the display with addressable LEDs. I don't know if I have the energy money or motivation to continue the project, but I wanted to share what I have and learn more about this unique display. reference photos and fun facts appreciated. actually I am new to the forum, and I am unsure how to share these CAD files on here so I guess the best I can do is an image of the sketch I made on freecad. I also have some old cad stuff I made on solidworks but I don't have an easy way to pirate a copy and then install it on linux. :(. I put the files up on volafile, they will expire in 2 days but its the easiest way I could think of for now. https://volafile.org/r/1mw4h567r

BenTheMiner Posted February 20, 2021 Share #3 Posted February 20, 2021 Someone has already made fonts for the R142 and R142A route and destination tiles, posted somewhere here on nyctransitforums. Your route tile recreation is completely accurate to my knowledge. Note that the destination tile is different than the route tile (I didn't realize this then). I am also recreating this along with many other signs, so let me know if there's anything you're interested in.
florpglrop Posted February 26, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted February 26, 2021 I think I am just trying to model the route tile, I think it looks the most aesthetically pleasing. could you tell me where I could find the font if you know? here is my progress so far (https://imgur.com/a/w1ngIpM) though I might abandon this project (I don't have the means to do much beyond some light 3d modelling since I am using linux and have no time, money or 3d printer) it still seems interesting.

You can find the fonts at https://www.nyctransitforums.com/topic/43376-r142r142a-background-font-templates/ though there are some inaccuracies Update: Looks like you found it just before I posted it! I can't tell if all of these segments are necessary, I wish I could have a clear reference. Its not much but I found a website where I can share the model so far: https://thangs.com/m/12000. I might drop this project since I do not have the means money or energy to finish this, maybe someone else here might find it useful.

After all, I plan on doing so! Edited March 1, 2021 by BenTheMiner

I'm going to see if I can create an entire sign out of it.

florpglrop Posted February 21, 2022 Author Share #13 Posted February 21, 2022 hey, I want to make another update with a more finished version of the 3d model. the Idea behind this is to illuminate the segments of the mosaic design with addressable LEDs. I am not sure if this should go in another thread. I don't have a 3d printer but if anyone does, you can try printing this or you can modify the code to adjust this part for whatever you like.https://cadhub.xyz/u/Radoka/r142a-train-route-tile https://cadhub.xyz/u/Radoka/R142a-destination-tile let me know what you all think!
