error46146 Posted September 3, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 3, 2007 How come there are these weird buses in Brooklyn that look like a Hybrid inside and out, but they don't sound like a Hybrid and they don't say Clean Air Hybrid Electric Bus on them ? nycbusfan Posted September 3, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 3, 2007 Those buses run on natural gas which is the reason they sound different. The buses you saw are from the Jackie Gleason depot which is the only bus depot to run all natural gas buses.
DOB2RTO Posted September 3, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 3, 2007 nycbusfan is correct. They are CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses. They are Orion VII, and New Flyer D40LF. At the depot I work at (West Farms), we have the Orion VII CNG. If a driver picks into a depot with those buses, we have to be certified to drive them. nycbusfan Posted September 3, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 3, 2007 nycbusfan is correct. They are CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses. They are Orion VII, and New Flyer D40LF. At the depot I work at (West Farms), we have the Orion VII CNG. If a driver picks into a depot with those buses, we have to be certified to drive them. It is called the New Flyer C40LF, If it was a D40LF it would be a diesel bus. Jackie Gleason also has 31 CNG Orion V's. What do you have to do to become certified to drive a CNG bus? PATCOman Posted September 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 4, 2007 Jackie Gleason is 100% CNG. Error: the Orion VIIs are louder and sound like a tiger unlike the hybrids. The CNGs roof tank is bigger than the hybrids, and there is no middle seat in the rear row like the hybrids. DOB2RTO: If a driver picks to West Farms, but they are not certified to drive an Orion VII CNG, can they still drive out of West Farms but only drive the Orion V and/or the New Flyer D60HF? DOB2RTO Posted September 5, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 5, 2007 It is called the New Flyer C40LF, If it was a D40LF it would be a diesel bus. Jackie Gleason also has 31 CNG Orion V's. What do you have to do to become certified to drive a CNG bus? C40LF, I stand corrected. A driver has to take a module on a computer, that tells the driver about the bus, how to shut off the fuel. It tells the driver the danger of Compressed Natural Gas, how the top tanks adds 2 tons extra to the weight of the bus, where not to stop if you get a leak (under bridges, or ELS), etc.... Then before you get to that depot with the CNG, a union rep (usually) will bring a bus to a depot, and they will show you the layout of the bus, and tell you about them. They brought one from West Farms to Kingsbridge. There were drivers from, Manhattanville, 100st, and Mother Clara Hale there. They don't take the buses to all the depots in OA territory, just one and the drivers from the depots the bus is not at, will go to the depot that the bus is at. We get paid for it to.
