How do I get into the MTA IT department?

Just a little of my history. I've done business with the MTA, bidding everything, to win contracts for supplies which I did. This was some years ago.

I have IT experience as a helpdesk tech with the NYDOE. I'll get fingerprinted soon again since my current background check went over its stature of limitations.

I am currently pursuing Computer Science as a major. Can you people give me some advice on this? I would love to work for the MTA but as a tech. I understand there isnt a age limit on that. There is a brain drain and the MTA might need to restart the hiring process to bring in people that can do the job.

*I am COMPTIA A+ and Net +_ certified and have the Microsoft MCSE but will in time have to upgrade to Windows 9. But I need a computer science degree which I am pursuing right now.

CompTIA A+ is such a was of a certificate. My previous job throws away people's resumes with that certificate.

Anyways, the link above is a great start, there are various IT related jobs and internships available.

Also, you noted that you are in pursuit of a CS degree, what happened to the nursing field? If so, if you are in CUNY, check your career department for MTA internship/partnerships. I believe you need to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify for those. You know internships these days, if they like you well enough, they'll hire you for good. Pretty much how I got my last job, not MTA though.

I decided to toss the old major. Got the change of major CUNY form, have enough credits, only part time since I have the prereqs. The IT field I think leaves more room for advancement. I think I will find better job satification in the IT field. Thats why I quit Nursing program. Now I am a CIS student, just waiting on FASLA. I reach the GPA requirement.

The program offers paid internships through US Corps I believe. So I can make the transition quickly. I'm working now, not hard work, I'm going to go to school 3/4 time starting in the last week in August and have about 35 hrs which works for me.

Thanks for the link. Whats the waiting time like?

I know the MTA website very well for information, so thats a plus. I also have machinist experience aside from IT experience.Plus Im a railbuff that is aware on subway issues. I might have to finish my CS degree. Even thought its not a requirement even for RTO maybe even before graduating I could get my way in.

Computer specialist I may check this out....

Absolutely! Computer science is where it's at. I'm going for my Bachelors in Computer Science currently.

Don't know about the MTA, but as far as private companies, tons of them offer paid internships for the summer, and some just require that you're majoring in Computer Science and not necessarily graduated yet. That's what I did this summer.

Thanks for the tip. I know BMCC is hiring for techs starting Aug 27th also so I have an alternative. But this gig goes through I can manage school (evenings. and they are available then yeah Im going for it.)

If all else fails well my current job is flexible anyway.
