  1. So any depot workers or anyone know what the deal is with those FIND fails? Does the (MTA) even know about the issue? When are they going to fix it? A conductor on the (N) a few days ago just flat out had the damn FIND boards off. I noticed that while the FIND boards are screwed up, announcements are proper.

  2. I think the B6 or B82 are good candidates. I support the B82 more because the limited B82 is just not doing the trick for the 82. IMO the best way to do it is to have sbs that say starts at 5:30 and ends at 11:00

RE: B82 SBS, See: Kings Highway west of Ocean Ave. No can do.

  3. I've been out of the loop lately, and search on this forum is kind of useless, so...how long is 7088 staying up north? I noticed a few pages back it was mentioned as still upstate. I understand that it had engine/transmission issues, but how long does it honestly take to resolve and repair/replace the faulty components? That thing's been out for a year now, right?

  4. Old news, but saw an interesting sight on the (F) last evening and forgot to post. Was on an R46 going local on the viaduct and saw an R160 pass us (in service, passengers and all) on the express track between Smith-9 and 4 Av. I saw a service change about some (F) and (G) trains being sent express south of Smith-9 that evening before getting on the (F), but I guess they switched one back at Jay. Not often you see two in-service (F) trains on the viaduct side-by-side local-express like that. By not often I mean basically never.

  5. Just a random thought, I totally miss those RTS's that had coach style seats if anyone remembers?  Was it like a test run or something?  I used to catch it all the time when they were on the B3.

Yeah, I wondered what those were. I remember seeing them back in the day on the Ulmer Park routes occasionally. Wondering what was the reason for them being bought in the first place.

  6. Should've taken photos, but looks like they installed transponders on the southbound express track on the IND Crosstown at Church. Saw a balise between the rails halfway in station and another a little further north. I thought the CBTC tests were going to be on the northbound track, but whatever. Looks like they're installing some system for testing there.

  7. Speaking of rough sections...I don't know how there hasn't been a derailment northbound on the Brighton over the switches south of Prospect Park. It's by far the bumpiest track I've ever been on in this system in my life. Feels like riding the S79 down Narrows road going west (you 79/93 people know what I'm talking about) before the first stop in SI. Violent bouncing and lots of noise.

  8. I mentioned it in the post. Westbound...leave the current route at Avenue R and Ocean Avenue and instead head down Kings Highway. Eastbound, turn off Avenue P at East 16 Street to join the current line. Operationally, the B2 could be split between Gleason and Flatbush.

I assume westbound you're going down Kings/Quentin to Coney Island Ave, turning north and then onto Ave P. That could work. the Kings Highway portion might delay westbound buses a lot, but I like it.

  9. Wow; first time I've seen anyone else mention CLED. Did you hear about that from me?

Unfortunately, CLED looks like it's becoming "vaporware". Sony hasn't done anything with it since CES 2012, and is instead going with OLED.

So it looks like OLED is the best thing for now. (You're right, LCD wouldn't be as good. There's also plasma displays, which are used as arrival/departure screens in Airtrain terminals and those new Penn Station displays, but those would probably overheat after awhile).

I follow tech sites, and that Sony thing made a big splash. Sucks to see nothing come of it, since it seemed like at least a good tech for sign displays.

  10. The 179 order is basically a continuation of the 160s and the 188s are for the most part, the converted 142As. Now I wouldn't be surprised if the 211 order switches over to multi-colored end signs. By the time that order commences, the cost of such technology should be much lower than it was in 1999-2000 or 2004-05 when the 142/143 and 160 orders were made respectively. Personally I wouldn't mind LCD monitors or something similar to mimic the old end signs on the legacy fleet.

By then Sony's "crystal display" (tiny, tiny LEDs that make up an actual high-res display, not the current "LED" TVs which are just LED backlit) should be ready for market, but would probably be too expensive and limited to high-end TVs. Traditional LCD displays probably not the best idea, either. Samsung, however, should have their OLED technology (which they've been making displays with for 5+ years now) developed to a point where the price is decent. OLED also has other qualities that make it ideal for this situation. The displays themselves have no backlight (the display is the display and backlight on its own) and will be able to be printed on tough materials. That's a route the (MTA) might go towards. Or maybe OLET display tech will be ready by then, who knows. That has basically all the benefits of all the different technologies with none of the downsides, like the new plastic light material that has all the individual benefits of LEDs and CFLs with none of the downsides that each has.
