  1. Where does any of this say my observation is incorrect?

alternate rush hour (F) trains to Kings Highway have little to do with ridership and more to do with capacity at Stillwell. technically, they could run nearly all those trains to Stillwell if they want to just like how they run nearly all rush hour (E) trains to Jamaica Center

i think the post made by paulrivera was alot more clearer and valid than i did though

  2. Simply put, ridership is very low on that section.

you're wrong because the diamond crossover is midway between West 8th and Stillwell which means Stillwell can't handle a train every 4 minutes during rush hours so 50% of them have to turn at Kings Highway. Also shortly before the morning rush hour or the evening rush hour is over, the last "extra" trains get taken out of service at Kings Highway and run empty to the yard on the middle track

they could turn a bit more than just 7.5 trains an hour at Stillwell before the morning rush hour or the evening rush hour is over, however those "extra" trains can't get taken out of service and run empty to the yard after Stillwell because the Stillwell area of the yard is where they have (D)(Q) trains stored whereas the Avenue X area of the yard is where they have (F)(G) trains stored so the extra trains on the (F) line get removed from service at Kings Highway shortly before the rush hour is over for midday service to start getting the headways on the entire (F) line down to 7-8 minutes instead of 4 minutes

  3. What are the terminal capacities for the four sets of tracks at Coney Island? I would estimate that the (F) tracks are capped at around 11-12 TPH, given how many (F) trains have to terminate at Kings Highway. Is this accurate, and are the maximum capacities similar for the other three sets of tracks?

8 minutes to/from Coney Island and 8 minutes to/from Kings Highway during rush hours actually which means 4 minutes between each (F) train total

  4. Dont understand why anyone would think otherwise. The northern terminals aremt swapped,so there shouldnt be any reason to do a whole fleet swap for this GO

not to mention the (D) is based at Concourse yard and the (F) is based at Jamaica yard. neither of those two lines are based at Coney Island yard, just stored there

  5. Naturally, there are serious downsides to this. There's the lack of a direct yard for the expanded (W), which I briefly touched upon previously. That will add to the trains' mileage. Also, with the loss of (N) train service, not only would the (W) have to be beefed up to match service demands, it would force more riders to transfer at 57 Street due to a lack of Broadway express service on the Astoria line. However, I think these problems are outweighed by the overall benefits, which include more service along Second Ave, faster service on the Broadway local and the Queens Blvd local (of course, that's barring any construction-related slowdowns).

are you sure ? i don't think anybody on the Astoria line really cares if the train is local along the Broadway line to be honest because the Broadway express running time doesn't really make much of a difference as it is only five extra stops the (W) makes and i don't think anybody on the Astoria line is going past chinatown or downtown Manhattan except for a small few for that matter.

  6. The (V) has a bad dead end at 2nd Avenue, which would mean current (M) riders coming from Brooklyn would have to transfer to the (F) from the (J) at Essex, and then make another transfer to the (V). Besides, I don't think Bay Ridge has good capacity for handling both (brownM) and (R).

why would they transfer to the (V)? the (F) makes the same avenue of the Americans station stops too. they just don't want the current (M) riders piling onto already overcrowded rush hour (F) trains or generally having to make multiple transfers to other lines just to reach chelsea and midtown manhattan or the (M) itself to get to Broadway in Brooklyn and the Myrtle Avenue line.

  7. I don't see a need for that if it's only two local stops.

i don't see why not, sure it's only two local stops but the (Q) will still remain on the same local tracks with the (F) till just north of West 4th where the switches are available. having it run express will just make it miss the (1)(2)(3)(L) transfer at 14th.

  8. Why does it take 20 minutes for an (F) to go from Jamaica 179th to Kew Gardens according to the schedule?

i'm almost certain that it is just an error the (MTA) made on the printed timetable for the (F) line. last time I rode that line on a regular weekday morning rush hour, it took 7 minutes for me right before i switched over to the (E) line that was already waiting across the platform after it arrived at the same time with my (F) train that i switched from.
