  1. Speaking of countdown clocks I wish they'd go back to "the next Manhattan bound express __ train to __ will arrive in __ minutes" The new "There is __ train to __ minutes away" can be confusing at times.

I remember when they first started the new announcements and I rushed to swipe my pass and bolted up the stairs like a fool thinking the train was arriving. The new system is starting to get familiar, but I prefer the old one.

Anyone know why they changed it?

The 7 line is part of what was the IRT. Why isn't its countdown clicks formatted like lines 1-6?

  2. For some reason, the countdown clocks in the downtown platform of 59th Street - Lex Av are showing times for uptown trains and the uptown clocks are showing downtown times. Hopefully someone fixes that soon...

    Wouldn't be the first time.

For a while I was hearing uptown announcements on the downtown (A)(C) platform at 168th St - Bway. They mistook trash carriers for service trains & the (A) for a non service train.

  3. Something weird happened today.I took the (2) from Sterling to Flatbush.Normal until right before Flatbush. We wait for 2 trains to leave the station but after the 2nd one left we still did not move.I got very worried about potential switch problems.we move about 5 minutes later.I asked the T/O what happened and he claims Flatbush Dispatch didn't know we were waiting to get in.

    That's another one.

I was at 42nd St - PABT and an (A) train that was crowded at 2 AM (yes, 2 AM!) was idling at the local track. I noticed headlights at the last car and said (well, mouthed bevause the noisy trash carrier was on the EXP track) to the conductor "Another (A) train on your tail".

She looked bewildered and then proceeded to close the doors and haul out.

Is this a sign that existing signal systems are deteriorating?

BTW do you guys think CBTC is worth it? I was thinking of a system with speed cameras and deer whistles. I'll go into detail if asked. I don't feel like tying volumes as much.

    It is Friday.

  4. Just to clarify, when the (A)(C) operate over the (F), they'll set it to a special version of the existing (A)(C) programs with a "via Delancey Street" sign added. Same for the (F) when it operates via the (A)(C). IIRC the MTA really doesn't like changing letters mid route and would rather have " (C) train via the (F) during the reroute than change to the (F) at West 4th and back to (C) at Jay.

Not trying to make you look like a fool. Just setting the record straight cause that post was a bit ambiguous...

I didn't word it that way, but I think I meant the same thing. I know that already (much like the (N) operating via the (D) or "West End").

That's why I used the term speed dial. Routes are programmed in entirety. I never once thought they were programmed on a modular basis. That's painstaking.

  5. We all know that there are some emergencies causing the R142 (2) to become a (1) and (3). What we are trying to say is that they are not for regular service on the (1) and (3).

Last week there was a situation where (3) trains were redirected via the (1) to 137th St - City College due to an investigation at Central Park North - 110th St. (2) trains were discharging at 96th St - Bway.

But if I remember, all trains have the toolset to display any set combo of train info. Since the (A)(C) is rerouted via the (F) so much, they probably have that on speed dial.

  6. If you know the information isn't factually accurate, why are you posting it?

Gosh. If I make a mistake and admit it, I still seem to get grilled for being inaccurate.

I feel it's better to be transparent than to continue grinding against veteran users. I iterated that to agree that my info was inaccurate.

If I make a mistake and acknowledge it, please don't rub it in. I know I made them.

  7. First things first: The (F) is scheduled to run 4 or 5 R46s a day in addition to R160s. Also, because of how Jamaica stores trains on weekends, operators take the first train available which can lead to some unintentional F and R train swaps. This has nothing to with how many cars are getting repaired.

Second, the delay in the capital program(which was approved in late May) did not delay the R211 order. It was always scheduled for award in 2016-17.

Third, there is no R193. (At least not a revenue car. There may be a work train with that number)

The one thing you are on the money about is the open windows.

I know that. Those two cars don't exist yet. They were one of the new sets that were supposed to employ gangway doors in at least one set.

Work cars have their own contract #? #TheMoreYouKnow????

BTW isn't it ironic that the cars that carry trash cause the most air pollution?

  8. Today I rode the Culver line for the first since they started the station rehab and was lucky enough to get a R46 :D cool riding them on the express....

Also there was TWO 68 (N) trains out today, back to back...

I think that's a sign that more trains are being repaired than can be in service. There's only about 6K of subway cars.

And NYC transit transports millions of people every day. There's an impending breaking point in all of this...

The delay of the capital plan has put the R193 & R211 orders on the holding block...

I rode a 62A on the (6) today, car had a broken A/C, took the shuttle over to the (1) and got on an R62A that also had a broken A/C [emoji38] ... that set on the (1) line had TWO hot cars on the same train!

They should really consider a summer swap where the 62As go on the (2) , (4) & (5) lines during the summer time...

Last summer I was on a 62A on the (6) where the car was hot and the A/C magically started working again once the train was out on the EL. The express runs + the long outdoor runs in the Bronx the 62As shouldn't have any A/C issues if they ran on the 2/4/5 during the summer.

As for Flatbush terminal swaps... they swap 32 (Z)'s into (J)'s all the time at Parsons, so swapping again with SMEE cars shouldn't be no big deal, also they could modify the 62A's route bullets to have something like the redbirds had...

Sometimes cars get hotter if the windows are opened. Forced air convection causes the AC to be counterproductive.

  9. I remember hearing somewhere that Canal Street on the (J)(brownM)(Z) used to have an eastern entrance with a token booth (presumably on the other side of Centre Street), where the original northbound platform is. I used to go through that station fairly often, so I reckon it must've closed sometime in the mid-1990s. Anyone care to shed some light on this?

I noticed a sealed set of stairs while I was waiting on the BMT portion. It looks shut up, but that lock looks like it can be breached easily.

I was walking toward a poorly lit section of the station's BMT portion and something just felt awful, like deteriorating plaster mixed with septic waste.

If it was something you did in the 90s, it may be left there too. A similar scenario exists at Essex Street's BMT platform. I believe the (J) once looped infinitely as the Broadway-Nasssau Shuttle, according to a 1958 render of a subway map I've modified with switch bearings.

  10. Lol oops I'm surprised it's still up after 6 years

No that sign is still up there.

Yeah but the (G) & (V) are nowhere near that station. If I remember, the (V) was deligitimized by the 2010 budget cuts to the MTA. "Retired" is too lax a term.

You might be right. The stickers put over these budget cuts are as bad as tending to gashes with a band-aid. Wounds still show, if that's what you mean by "still there."

  11. AS A MODERATOR REQUESTED, I HAVE RELOCATED THIS POST TO A MORE APPROPRIATE THREAD. NAVIGATING USING TAPATALK IS STILL NOT EASY FOR ME. Thanks for pointing me the right way.

A sick customer held up another (6) train ahead of us for over 15 minutes and they even refused to eject us at the above station, displacing those who intended to Xfer to the (L) or Gramercy Park above.

Sick customers seem to dominate the manifest of preventable delay symptoms, and largely the rider exhibits poor judgment until it compromises their health more severely, which also compromises commutes.

The position of our train made us incapable of being rerouted to the EXP track like the several (6) trains behind us were. I suggested jokingly we dock to the disabled train like a space station to provide egress to distressed customers, and when they heard that they were not able to disembark, some became livid.

Of course, I needed to Xfer to the (N) or (Q), so I left the Astor Place (6) station and walked behind Walgreen's to the entrance of nearby 8th Street - NYU (N)® station [DOWNTOWN & BKLYN]. I made it to Pacific Street by 3:15 PM.

Having an unlimited may be costly, but you can add ingenuity to your commute when you need it most.

The 6 has always been quicker then the 4/5 imo. The 4/5 have to deal with each other at the Rogers Av Junction where 5s split off to Flatbush, and also when 5s terminate at Bowling Green when 5s have to dump and then rejoin on the northbound side. Then again after 149th Street where 5s join the Lex into 138 Street and into 149th Street lower level. The 4/5 are frequent lines and all it take is for someone to hold a door and you have a problem. There isnt much room for error on the Lex Express even with ATS. When ATS has a problem the Lex turns into a nightmare, which is why I think it was better with the old signal system.

Spot on. The lack of self awareness of one's commute will stall trains no matter how much tech is invested. Riders must remember they're riding PUBLIC transit. If they want to be selfish they can get a car.
