Source: The MTA Wants to Deny the Bronx a New Subway | Suite101.com

I was under the impression that a station at 125 Street and 2 Avenue wasn't possible due to the water or impediment to future extension to the Bronx.

    Any comments?

The conspiracy theories that are really under way are worse than we can imagine. This seems rather tame compared to what I've fathomed.

  2. T

Has nothing to do with costs.  New Haven Line zone 12 (Mount Vernon East, Pelham and New Rochelle) is the same cost as Harlem and Hudson Zone 3 (Mount Vernon West, Yonkers, etc).  The difference is where the $$$ goes.  Hence the rediculous reason that someone with a one way ticket to Mount Vernon East can't use it to Mount Vernon West regardless the two stations are less than a mile from one another.

MTA has no say over CT fares.  CDOT sets the fare.  This is why there was a fare hike for only Connecticut earlier this month.

That's good to know. Does CT assume repairs or does the MTA outpost them? Their buses are the best in the land though. You can't beat $1.50 a ride.

So the Zone numbering is to thwart needless intermediary tickets.

  3. Two minor corrections:

Metro North does not go into Columbia County, the furthest north is Wassaic in Dutchess County which is Zone 10.  Zone 11 does not exist.

New Haven mainline is Zone 12 to 21 (Zone 12 to 14 are NY stations).  New Canaan branch is Zone 31.  Danbury Branch Zone 41 and 42.  Waterbury Branch is Zone 51.

Thanks for that. I figured I messed up somewhere. Placing CT at any zone higher than 10 pushes costs to them. I feel that if they pay more they have the right to say more. But the MTA is tone deaf to everyone.

I also feel that MNR fare hikes should be apportioned by zone because it's not just those in NYC who are poor. Poverty is radial outward from the NYC area.

The stereotype that Westchester is deep pocketed is very false. I also feel CT should be given less steep hikes. Pricing out riders who depend on public transit can backfire badly...

I agree Zone 1 is very too expensive. The intermediate fares in the Bronx are much more reasonable. Now compare that to the LIRR, where every station west of Jamaica is Zone 1, although Jamaica Station is pretty reasonable.

I don't ride LIRR much so I can't gauge how a hike affects riders there. The last line I rode was the BY to Freeport and back.

  4. A ticket is valid for any station within the zones printed on it. The two halves of a round trip are treated independently. Both Woodside and Penn are in Zone 1, both Manhasset and Mineola are in Zone 4. So your ticket is valid.

Same rule applies on MNR between the Hudson and Harlem lines.

GCT to Harlem is Zone 1

    Bronx is Zone 2

    Westchester is Zones 3-6

    Putnam is Zone 7

Dutchess is Zones 8 thru 11

    Columbia is Zone 12

and I believe Connecticut is Zone 13 and up

Between Zones usually btwn $3 and $4. For example, my round trip ticket from 233rd St <> White Plains is $7.50 [iNT].

When you board outside of Zone 1 your ticket drops in cost by as much as $7.

  5. The (L) and B37 serve completely different areas. In any case you can't really feasibly have it start at City Hall because the Brooklyn Bridge prohibits buses, and it'd be too unreliable anyways. Even with the (R) being unreliable as it is, it's more reliable than a bus crossing the river.

I forgot about the CDL restrictions. Whoops

  6. That route doesn't even come close to pulling the loads that the other routes do. I agree with ATH. Yeah, more than 2K per weekday is decent for the service levels it has, but the route isn't even that utilized. You can have SRO buses, but that's about it.

Then you have areas like Bay Ridge, where the bus makes almost every stop. Eliminating stops won't do much of anything to reduce the amount of buses used (and would rather piss off people too). Even the B63 (which has about 5 times the ridership of the B37) doesn't make a good candidate, because of similar reasons (there's also the issue of 5 Avenue being too narrow in sections to even have a bus lane). The B37 as it is still pretty fast anyway.

You have a point. In an effort to renew interest, is it feasible to have it start at City Hall as a LTD variant (weekdays & eve's). While it may be underutilized now I'm sure some (L) riders will sink their swipes into anything viable.

It's fast. Given the existing nature of buses, that's a commendable remark.

The 4th Av section was called Pacific St, whereas the Brighton and IRT sections was called Atlantic Av. Eventually they were all unified to Atlantic Av-Pacific St.

Once Barclays Center opened up, they brought naming rights to the station and turned it into Atlantic Av-Barclays Center

The B37 already has SBS...it's called the (R) train.

That's why I suggested it initially. The (R) has a history with the neighborhood that has been unpleasant, and for some that's their ONLY option. In addition to the 2019 (L) shutdown, I brought this forward because top brass has stated that they won't do a study for the (R) until the 2nd Avenue Subway opens.

If I were a resident on the 4th Avenue corridor, I'd say that's not fair.

  7. Because everyone is getting their rocks off on the "new" (W)

which was in Brooklyn yesterday. Had no idea that section of Brooklyn was called "Gravesend" (86th St & West 8th).

But I did know that the (R) portion of Jay Street was called Lawrence St and that Barclays Center once referred to the 4th Avenue platform in its name. In fact, it's like a snapshot. The (W) strip map is nostalgic in of itself.

Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

Hey guys. Do you think of the B37 ever getting SBS? That section of Kings is developing as fast as LIC and I think that once the storefronts start taking customers it would be a good idea. In addition, it would provide one block access to the 4th Avenue Line.

I brought it up because I happen to be going to that strech of town tomorrow. I see a lot of missed opportunities there.

  8. 2 trains suspended.

If it affects the (3) on Lenox Avenue-

The (3) could be pushed back to Chambers St to provide Brooklyn bound service. The (5) should be extended to Flatbush Av but curtailed at East 180th Street. A second (5) shuttle should run between East 180th Street & Dyre Avenue, repairs permitting, terminating/returning on Track M.

For Lenox Avenue nearby buses could do extra legwork or shuttle buses could be deployed. A nonstop shuttle between 149th Street - Concourse & 96th Street should also be made available, making stops at 148th Street & 7th Avenue before proceeding south on Broadway.

The 125 St Fault line slips, Severing (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)<6>(A)(cool.png(C)(D)(Q)(T) service. There are no switches North of 116 St to turn (Q) and (T) trains.

    --

The Lower Manhattan (R) tunnels are flooded by a water main. The Montague St Tunnel is ok. The South side of the manhattan Bridge is under construction, and you need to re-route the (R) and also provide a shuttle bus for either the (N) or (Q), and no combining. Good Luck!

May I ask what a "fault line" is?

No way 63rd Street can handle the (E), (F), and (M).

Could you reroute one of them via the (R) thru Queens Plaza on the 59th Street line to ease that potential crowding?

Could you link to that thread, just in case? Just got grilled by @Turtle for necroposting...I don't want any more flags tacked to me.

  10.

Perhaps the Q33 and Q70 SBS can swap. Obviously, it can't be done right away, but if it should, it should be done after LGA construction is completely done.

If I remember correctly, wasn't that the way it was before the Q70 LTD?

    ???? Eric Shields | #MassTransitHonchkrow ????

    THE Hudson Valley's essential Fare-blazer ????

  11. Would it be sensible to have the Q70 stop at the marine terminal? I never understood why the Q47 is needed for that. I noticed on older maps that the Q33 played a role similar to the Q7O.

Speaking of old maps, does anyone notice the kiosk maps portray the time the Montague Tunnel was closed?

He means express bus to express bus and the transfer would be done using your Metrocard.

Ooh it can? That's good to know. [emoji4]

Simply put, the Glendale folks want the the Q54 & the Q29..... The Q47 is secondary, for obvious reasons

(duration to the subway & quite frankly, lack of points of interest/attractions).....

Way I see it, again, running the Q47 to Myrtle would be much ado about nothin.... If you take/see the Q47 enough, you'll notice that buses empty out at Metropolitan for the most part (usually for the Q54, WB).... As for your other suggestion, we seem to be on the same page - I've also thought about Woodhaven/Metropolitan, but I can't think of a feasible turnaround scenario....

  12.

It would be nice it the MTA turned the Woodhaven Bl/Hoffman Dr stop and the Woodhaven Bl/Booth St stop be turned into a transfer for most Express buses so that people can transfer between different lines and branches.

You mean between local and express or express to express? The latter isn't possible as Transfers aren't issued between those. Transfers from local buses cost $3.75 if I remember. If you have a paper Xfer it'll go in but it'll also say add coins either 15 quarters or three buffalo coins & 3 quarters).

Deferring to that hideous duo isn't a good answer.

When repairs go on under that stretch of road it's like watching paint dry. It's painfully slow because the MTA can't just shut down service for any section without mass panic or repercussions, even if it is a planned change.

Because of this, Queens Boulevard still has numerous issues with Sandy's grime all over it. I'm just glad the drainage was OK during that water main break last year.

  14. I hate having women train operators. They're so cautious and tend to brake earlier than men train operators. You don't get a good amount of speed from 18 Av to Av I (maybe twenty-five to thirty mph), what are you doing breaking thirty feet before the station?

    Women, cautious?

One too many times have I seen women leave their pit cell during uneasy times.

Not long ago a female conductor was slugged as the (J) pulled into Essex Street one Thursday afternoon.

Reduced crowing on the Lex 4/5/6 is something you will never see as long as the Second Av Subway is never built.

Unfortunately, the set that got them installed still has them. However, no other sets have gotten them since which is a good sign. Also, when Corona replaced 7505's display with a new one, they didn't put a new LED sign over it. I wish they would take them out entirely.

  16. They say reading is fundamental, why don't people do it on the weekends when the 4 train does not go to Brooklyn?

    Because people are idiots. [emoji39]

Some users on this forum either give commuters too much credit or kudos, or they're stuck with the smarter crowd. I want to meet that crowd.

  17. If you made them, they would each need to get their own MetroCard to ride simultaneously.

Good point. That would get expensive. If you could splice my EasyPay card to multiple plastics, that would be cool.

Every MetroCard ever issued has a unique ID, a base type & a physical expiration date.

I went over types in an earlier post. For example, PATH turnstiles only take type 22.

Any further word on the electronic displays that appeared on the R68s?

I'm interested in hearing about that too. Those cars still have some gusto left. A refurbishment would do them good.

When the (D) was bisected three weeks ago, a conductor I talked with lamented the limited appeal of the rollers. "Wish we could be gone with them already", says one conductor at 34th St.

" nobody listens to us anyway", says another at Pacific Street.

Someone posted a preview earlier. Can strip maps be retrofitted as well, maybe with OLED for a nicer aesthetic touch?

  18. What the hell does R68 (N) s have to do with R46 (R) s?

Because (N) trains are usually run as R160 cars, and it was unusual to see an R68 car as an (N). I know they are different builds, but dimension wise they have a lot in common. I often confuse the two.

The comment I quoted is in tandem with my response.

    #TangentAlert #SupportingDetails

And based on signage and past comments, the R46 cars were refurbished with technology that brings their flair into the late 70s to early 80s, about the same age as the R68 cars.

Yes there was, I rode the subway the past weekend and personally SAW MULTIPLE R46s on the (R) .

    I'm not saying there wasn't. In September 11th, 7 out of 10 (R) trains I glanced were R160 cars.

You're probably right. Everyone's vantage point seems to veer off but of course I believe you. Not like I can make shadow clones of myself to verify everyone's claims.

I have to have faith and trust that we all have different yet legit scenarios. If I want to proofread others I'll join a newspaper column.

  21. Yes, the X17 (keeping in mind that BusTime has the X17C labeled as the X17) is showing the X17J code. Thank you for repeating what I said.

Speaking of stop codes, do you find it a hindrance when you type an intersection and it either lists the wrong borough, or doesn't have the exact endpoint in the multiple choice.

    For example,

Flatbush Ave & Church Ave B41 > SEND

    Then...

    From: 511123 < PICK A DIRECTION

    1) KINGS PLZ VIA FLATBSH

    2) DWNTN BKLYN CADMAN PLZ VIA FLATBSH

...and I need Bergen Beach bound service.

I do believe the buses have to be approved first before hitting the roads again (I could be wrong about this). 7304 wasn't out for a few days after it got wrapped and it was a month before I saw it running again.

Would that be why I've seen buses in and out of the Gun Hill Depot scrawled with neon writing?
