  1. Possible..I'm 6'3 280lbs, bald headed with a beard and usually keep to myself in crew rooms unless my classmates or a handful of people I know are there. The 3 just takes repetition. I had a problem with them but the trick is just take a small break about a car length or 2 into the station (20lbs) and let it kick in and ride it out. Then adjust as u approach the end without EVER EVER EVER releasing all of it. If u release it, u just told the train "get ready for power" and the brakes wont come back instantly like with the 1 and 6 train. If u are on the 1 a lot and treat a 3 the same, like the mistake I made, u will overrun. The 142s are a video game. They are the easiest to get used to. I still take a small break at all times when I enter but most people wait a little longer. Everybody in a rush but unless I got a super slow conductor, I still get holding lights, so I see no reason to do the whole 35mph at the conductor board, full service break, hard stop thing lol.
  2. Next class will be hitting the road just in time for the June job pick start. I'm glad for you guys, I know this covid bullshit killed at least a handful of classes.
  3. They might extend the list expiration date because of covid so there is a chance for both, but it could be a long wait. My boy got called almost 7 years after taking the previous test only because of the extension, but he did get called and he's been in transit 5 or 6 years I think.
  4. Well the xx list was at the 300s so I'm assuming they would need those same type of numbers to cover jobs. I would guesstimate they would need to hire 100 to 150 to bring the xx list back up to the 350s. But like I said take it with a grain of salt, there may be some variable I am not privy to that I am not counting. So I could be way off.
  5. Dont want to get into specifics but it was 3 separate incidents. 2 of them I take full responsibility for but the last one was only my fault because I didn't call in the equipment. I learned a hard lesson but now I am going to annoy RCC calling in every little thing on these old ass trains.
  6. It's not as long as u pay attention and retain the information. It gets tougher, at least in my personal experience, when u out on your own. Just because things happen and there are certain scenarios u briefly covered in schoolcar that rarely happen, and when they do happen u forget what to do or what the situation calls for. So it's in your best interest to continue to study even when u come out, but with crazy xx life it can be hard to prioritize studying with sleeping and family life and relaxing. I was supposed to come off probation this month and I had a few incidents and got myself extended. Now I gotta work another 3-4 months knowing I get terminated if I have another one. Its stressful but u just gotta never get comfortable out there and make sure u concentrate on every.single.station.stop. And make sure u call in a bad train with long brakes because if u dont and those long brakes are the cause of your incident, nobody will believe u.
  7. I counted all the jobs listed for the current job pick and I counted 1228 jobs. There are also 1464 train operators on the call sheets (list of people in order of seniority to determine who is picking what date and time). Those call sheets list people that retired recently or people who maybe have moved up to other positions. So that's only a difference of 236 train operators not counting the retired people etc. If those numbers are correct and there arent any variables I'm missing, that's gonna be more than 57 openings. I ran these numbers by someone in the union and they said it sounds about right. Just consider that I'm number 32x on the extra extra list and theres 58 people behind me. So thata gonna be around 100 openings, again assuming there isnt a variable I am missing.
  8. Nah I dont usually call but after being changed twice now I call them weekly just in case.
  9. Not at all..I'm adjusting though. It's not so bad as long as they give me late PMs so I can see my daughter during the day. It's those 12pm 1pm jobs that are wack as hell.
  10. Lucky...I was tw, then ss for one week, then wt now back to tw this week
  11. A division...plus I got switched to PMs like 2 months ago.
  12. I'm xx. I've had 4 different RDOs in 4 weeks. Take that for what its worth.
  13. PMs is definitely the shittiest tour as far as social life. I was on AMs when I came out and just got switched like a month ago. It's been rough. Midnights I'd have trouble at first but I'm sure I could adjust. If I was midnights I could still go home and sleep and then take my kid to the park or something. With PMs I cant do anything on days I work because my kid is getting online schooling and services in the morning and by the time she's done and eats lunch, boom I gotta get ready to report. Then I get home after she's in bed. I put in a g2 requesting a change a couple of weeks ago but so far nothing has happened. I mean I get it, this is what it is, but man I'm just glad I'm at least in the A division and didn't get stuck in the B. If I was getting out at 2am at stillwell and then reporting at coney island the next day I would have even less time to see my family.
  14. Might end up being more than 57 vacancies but even still, that's a big number. Classes are now 5 or smaller. They are out road posting and doing road ops now here in the A division. Don't worry guys, I am sure before this year is out there will be some hiring. So many people have retired that everywhere u go u see flyers announcing their retirement and in a Facebook group somebody is saying goodbye every other day.
  15. There's been more classes than that. I was ta79 in july along with ta80. They are up to ta86. Ta84, 85 and 86 got stuck doing yx for 3 months because of covid. They just went out doing road ops or road posting now idk which.
  16. I'm almost certain you will stay in your tier. One of the guys I posted with worked with nyc health and hospitals and I believe he said he kept his tier. You can always call nycers and confirm.
  17. Yea I think more people took this test than the 2009 test, but people under 3000 shouldn't freak out. I think they will reach the 3000s before the list expires.
  18. You guys need to be more hopeful. My boy has been an operator for 6 years and he scored like a 83 on the 2009 exam. They extended it and he got lucky so u never know. His list number was very high.
  19. Some of us got lucky when we came out and got AMs, but they just switched most of us to PMs this week. All but one of us is on PMs now.
  20. I overheard a couple of schoolcar TSS last week say that they are starting to analyze ways to start classes again while staying safe. So maybe they are hoping to start a few as soon as this thing comes down to a manageable level.
  21. Did you get AMs yet? Cause somebody at the crew office noticed this discrepancy and my whole class just got changed to PMs😄😄
  22. Everybody has a different experience I guess. I was worried about everything u said here but honestly my tour hasn't changed once and my days off have pretty much been the same. I don't feel like it's affected my life outside of work much except for having to be up so early (I'm on AMs). Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones so far but I can't really complain about the crew office. I live in the Bronx and since I came out I've only been sent out to Brooklyn 2 times. Most of the time I've been sent to van cortland and Woodlawn which are the closest to where I live.
  23. Yea it was in the A. I did hear about that memo but I also heard that while it's being investigated the trainer gets put in the platform while the student just goes back to Schoolcar, so that seems unfair to some people. When I posted there were days I waited hours for someone to take mercy and accept a student and some of my classmates had to leave without being posted after 8 hours of waiting. I love teaching so I would do it someday but I'm not gonna do it until I'm comfortable as hell out there. Sidenote I refresh my mind about things at certain locations by pretending I already have a student in the cab and talking like I'm teaching them. Keeps my mind fresh about things like points of no return or places where we can be turned around.
  24. Not worth the hassle to me. I know I was a student myself and we have to pay it back but I was the student in a situation u may have heard of where the trainer actually overran a home signal. It wasn't my fault but im sure he feels it is since he was distracted talking to me when it happened. Also posted with a guy who was very new and I was his first student. Dude was soo scared the whole time he barely let me operate. They should think about taking it easier on trainers if the student makes a mistake so guys aren't so afraid to take students but even with that being said, it will be a long while before I'm letting somebody else operate that 77 ton behemoth while I backseat drive. Too nerve-racking.
