  1. It has to be approved by a superintendent and to be honest, it very likely will not be approved. Train operator is a safety sensitive title and rest is super top priority. U gonna be waking around these yards and trains so much u not gonna want to even study which u will have to. I doubt you will have energy for a part time job.
  2. Do any of you know what class you are being considered for? Last i heard there was an august class but maybe they decided on more classes.

  5. To give u an idea...I'm yard posting right now and there are 3 train operators here for 4 jobs. 2 of them are staying to do overtime to cover the empty pm jobs. They are very short.

  9. It took a while for me but my case was different and also there were no classes scheduled until February, so i was out for 5 months. But i don't see why it would take more than a couple of weeks under normal circumstances. As far as when the list expires, it would not shock me at all if they extended it. They pretty much had to freeze hiring for a year because of Covid so an extension would not be out of the realm of possibility.
  10. I believe u can defer before or after but I'm not sure because I never did. U would have to call the number on the email u got. I reinstated my name by calling and emailing dcas.
  11. From my time in the A, the 2, 4 and 5 all seemed equally coveted by seniors, especially am tours. Can't speak for the B division just yet. As for shifts it seems to me AMs are most desired with PMs not too far behind. If we got a night differential on par with other agencies(10%) then PMs and Midnights might be the most wanted.
  12. Yes..ran into a couple of schoolcar TSSs i know from my last time and asked them. 40 operators, 8 per class is what they told me.
  13. Slowly working their way up i imagine. If there aren't many quarantines with the may induction class I would think the next one would have more people, but that remains to be seen.
  14. They hired at least one new TSS that i know of. Next TO class will be 40 people, 8 per class.
  15. For sure, but any little bit helps. I feel like I'm way more comfortable with lines with the additional material than i would be if i just waited to take notes while i road post. I still pay attention when i take the train and my classmates and i are good about grabbing route guides when we go to terminals. But there are things u won't see on route guides or while taking the train or looking at those points of no return signs on the platform, like places where they can turn u, reroute possibilities, spur tracks and places to take u out of the way. I brought my notes with me on Friday and was able to ask more in depth questions to my TSS. I hear what u guys are saying though, wouldn't want anyone coming in thinking they know it all before even charging a train. I personally just feel like every little bit i can get my hands on will help make me a better TO.
  16. I wish schoolcar would come up with better guides for the routes and lines in addition to the induction guide and equipment guide presently given to us. The schematic is very technical and difficult to understand until after a few road days. If the schematic was at least better illustrated to show which lines came through which areas that each page is shown, there would be no need for outside sources. They also stopped giving out the route guide but even so, the route guide doesn't help when u are rerouted down a different line. This book we are referring to has helped me tremendously in understanding the key hubs and connections and potential reroutes and things of that nature. The B is a beast and going down each individual line using the book and taking notes has opened up my eyes and made it seem a lot simpler.
  17. I don't think so. There's a section that talks about signals...as long as u know those aren't the definitions schoolcar wants u to learn, u should be fine.
  18. For everybody that's coming in, I'm going to make a book recommendation. https://www.nyctrackbook.com/ It is an encyclopedia about the system. It's a train buff book so it's more about just getting acquainted with the system if you are interested or are like i was and had no knowledge about it except the price of a fare and where to transfer to the D to get home. It has a lot of info about lines, yards, the trains, etc. Mostly buff stuff and not what u need to get through schoolcar but it'll open up your mind and get your "transit brain" started. It isn't cheap, but I just came across it and i have been looking at it all weekend and using the maps of the lines to get myself familiar with the B division key areas.
  19. The 2nd one is later in may, i believe 3 weeks after the first one. We got stalled one week, came back for 2 days, and then got sent home for 8 more work days. We are all healthy now and moving on but they are trying to speed things up a little to get us back up to speed with the 3 other classes.
  20. We got quarantined a couple of times so we are behind the other classes. Our first practical isn't until this coming Saturday may 1st. I'm feeling pretty good since it isn't my first rodeo. My classmates feel a little nervous as everybody is before their first major test, but i think they will all pass. We have the practical, then a day off, then the signal exam and signal practical, and then the midterm, all within 4 days. A little unnerving for them but i think they are ready.
  21. There's a raise that's supposed to happen in may that's probably why the discrepancies. Our starting rate is 35 something I don't remember.
