    I’ve been on the (Q) more often now that the (N) has been cut from Coney Island. The (Q) doesn’t get treated like crap as often as the (N). Aside from the train operators’ performance, I don’t really have complaints about the (Q). 18 minutes from Coney Island to Chinatown is pretty damn good performance and competitive with the (N) back when it performed at its peak.

    The (Q) is probably the most reliable B division line overall. It’s a great line given how few GOs it has on the weekend and how its minimal interlining make it one of the few lines to be about the same weekdays and weekends...

    IF this is done as the last time so around 2010 and the reefing before that, all were dismembered at Tracks 11 & 12 inside the Main Shops.

    It appears a guess so far will entail 20 cars per work for 4 weeks (that would be the 80 cars as widely circulated).

    Interested in the specific car numbers or is that TMI?

    What were the car numbers?

    I'd avoid closing 155th given the terrain of the area makes it hard to walk to the (C) .

    Anyways, moving on, I'll present a new kind of scenario:

    Budget cuts force the MTA to cut down on station maintenance and as a result 8 stations will need to be closed. Keep in mind that you cannot simply close a station just on the basis of low ridership and you must also take into account proximity to other stations. Here are my 8:

    Hewes St (J)(M) 

    Van Siclen (3) 

    Beverley (Q)

    Neptune (F) 

    Classon (G) 

    Aqueduct Racetrack (A) 

    104th (A) 

    Van Siclen (J)

    Some key takeaways in my eyes:

    - NYCT acknowledges the operational issues at Nostrand/142/149, and acknowledges the need to make investments/routing changes

    - NYCT acknowledges R68 propulsion issues (and also gives a bunch of really interesting data on pre- and post-field shunting elimination acceleration profiles for various car classes)

    - Lots of good stuff on timer/speed sign visibility

    - Disappointing lack of analysis of dwell time issues and off peak service problems

    - Super interesting applications of axle counters to shorten fixed dwells at force and lock controlled interlockings

    Did they ever do a similar report on say, 34th or 11th St?

    The reason for a <5> service existing is to separate north WPR and Dyre crowds - Dyre mainly consists of Manhattan-bound riders (mainly for the east side) while WPR consists more of intra-borough traffic. It therefore makes sense to separate these two crowds by having the (2) mainly serve the intra-borough traffic (considering a lower demand for the West Side and the (2)'s slower route into midtown) and having the (5) run express considering that more riders there are commuting into Manhattan for the east side. 

  7. De-interlining plan for Queens:

    (C) runs express south of 50th via new switches (late night (A) service still stops at 23rd and Spring)

    (E) same as today

    (F) same as today

    (K) Forest Hills-WTC via QBL local, 53rd and 8th local (weekdays only except late nights)

    (M) via 63rd (runs to Forest Hills all times except late nights)

    (N) 96th/125th-CI via Broadway express and then normal routing

    (Q) same as today

    (R) Astoria-Bay Ridge

    (W) eliminated or preserved for the few short turns

    (J)(Z) skip stop eliminated; (Z) express service runs express between Marcy and Broadway Junction in the peak direction

    Some new extensions:

    Some extensions/other changes to improve service:

    (7) to 162nd-Northern (one intermediate express stop at 149th-Murray Hill)

    (F) to Springfield Blvd (2 tracks; cut and cover down middle of Hillside) with stops at 188th, 196th, Francis Lewis, 212th and Springfield)

    (J)(Z) one stop extension to Merrick-168th

    Under this plan you would convert the Atlantic branch to PATH standards, not the other way around.

    The only question in my mind is whether this is a good use of Atlantic’s expansion potential. There are many good arguments to be made for extending that line to connect with MNR or NJT rather than looping back on itself to foster through-core travel. A train from Valley Stream to White Plains would be quite useful. 

    What about PATH to Jamaica via the Atlantic branch?

    The only consistent fast place to me is Chambers-96 on the (2)(3) . 6th between West 4th and 34th also feels rather fast at times.

    Even with the R68s, I've found the (B) to still be rather fast as an express (save for SB heading towards Avenue H).

    238th on the (1) I think is available to enter northbound (IIRC they never removed the entrance after the Manhattan bound platform rehabilitation project). As for other stations like this, I think Dyckman (A) is also entrance only.

    The (E)(F) need the R211s because the gangways and wider doors will allow for shorter dwell times on the jam-packed QBL.

    I'm just trying to do some math there. According to Lance's 09/16/2019 Car assignments:

    • (F) uses 104-112 R46's
    • (R) uses 248 R46's

    So I assume that 360 R46's (not including spares or extras for potential fleet expansion) are being transferred from Jamaica to Coney Island, roughly 45 sets.

    • (N)(W) uses 290 R160's (along with 24 R68's and 8 R68A's)
    • (Q) uses 210 R160's (along with 8 R68/A's during the PM Rush) 

    Roughly 50 sets of R160's are at Coney, with a minimum of 45 being transferred to Jamaica.

    Crap :(, not gonna lie. As a South Brooklyn commuter on the (B) and (Q) , I'm a little disappointed. A lot of R46's are pretty beat up and not a good look, especially if they're moved over to Brighton. I'd also miss those 46's on QBL. It's gonna be strange not to see them on the (F) or (R) . On the plus side though, I think that means we'll (Coney) get R211's starting next year 😁 (if delivery is on schedule of course).

    I’d imagine the R211s would directly replace the 207th R46s while they indirectly replace the CI ones by displacing Jamaica R160s.
