Now the cat is out of the bag, I can share a bit. That was the initial plan for the April pick, and was initially set for last December. This is the deinterlining plan I have hinted at. I didn't think it was still going on.

Any idea as to when this service change might take effect?

  2. I understand that many of you are looking to maximize benefit by de-interlining certain areas, but you have to really consider what transferring entails and why certain lines go where they do. In the Bronx, it seems rather burdensome to run the (5) to Dyre and have it run express on WPR when the switches are not configured well for either of those things. However, the MTA does it anyways. Why? Most Dyre riders are commuting to Manhattan in the Lexington area and thus get express service and a one-seat ride. On the other hand, WPR has more intra-boro commuters so the (2) serves them fine. If you decide to suddenly run the (3) in it's place and send the (5) to Woodlawn to eliminate the junction, you're subjecting many riders to a stair climb and a wait for a sardine packed Jerome train. In addition, you're making life harder for Harlem and the UWS too as their emptier (3) trains are now packed with riders. Want to fix this with the greatest benefit to all? Give Concourse some TLC and rebuild the 180th-Dyre junction. Keep in mind that in the end, making riders deal with a cross-platform transfer as a result of deinterlining is a lot different than making them climb up a flight of stairs for an already-crowded train.

Other than 76th street, the biggest mystery in the subway today is the location of the museum R40M pair..

From what I know, it's not at CI, not at 207th, not at Pikin nor on display at the museum. My guess would be it's stored on the TM leads between Hoyt and the museum. The WillyB pair is at CI, pretty much the location of all the R32-42 museum cars are known except for that R40M pair.

    Could it be at Concourse?

Good luck to the (MTA) accomplishing the 2020-24 Capital Plan. This coronavirus is really going to leave an impact on future plans...

Say goodbye to phase 2 of SAS and ESA for 5 more years... looks as if the biggest capital project that will get done at this point will be the Nostrand Avenue exit re-openings...

As a conductor absolutely. There's the obvious of not having to make announcements, along with the local recycle NTT's have, the adjustable seat and there's more leg room along with a bigger window which for me at 6'2 is important. I've banged my head many times on the R46's.

With that said the R46's are the best SMEE equipment, or atleast my favorite to work on in the B div they're not terrible trains, but overall I'd take a R160 any day of the week. The R143's are hands down my favorite trains to work out of both divisions.

Which cars were the absolute worst to work on (including now-retired ones)?

    R179s on the A really don't get speedy between 59th and 125th. T/Os can't even hit 40 after 103rd

IIRC the reason for that is timers which start around 96th. One thing that is nice about the R179s is that they accelerate faster.

First off, not to be nit picky, but that yard is called the 36th-38th Street Yard.

That’s also an option, but I’m not sure when they will begin the planned conversion to passenger space. However, that option will remain open. In addition, I would also recommend extending the line over 31st Street to the Con-Ed plant, where a brand new train yard would be made to house extra trains. Also at the other end, there would be a small storage yard (akin to 137th Street Yard) along with one new station at 101st Street to allow for more train storage, though this location would leave trains vulnerable to vandalism.

I don’t really see why we need an extension of the (R) past 95th... the distance is walkable and there is plenty of storage along the (R) already if it is sent to Astoria- Astoria middle, 86th relay, Whitehall, city hall lower, etc.

Someone on Wikipedia last night posted that SIR R44 car 399 is currently stored at the Coney Island Yard but has been stripped of parts and out of service.

Can anyone please confirm (pics, vids, etc) if you guys can?

You can't make out the numbers here, but this link from google maps shows a single SIR car and a 4 car set of R44s sitting at CI yard.

so far as of this week:

-the (F) is pretty much 100% NTT at this point (very slim chance to catch an R46 on it now)

-the (R) is about half 46s and half 160s

-the (N)(W) as others stated are mostly R46/R68 tho theres still a few R160s that remain

-the 46s and 68s on the (Q) will eventually become permanent when more 160s head over to jamaica

    other news:

-a few R46s have started reappearing on the (C), but only about 1-3 sets of R32s on the (A) as of late

    -several retired/mothballed R32s sitting in 207, R42s are all retired/OOS

Which station is better to see the retired cars awaiting scrapping; 207th or 215th?

There are "dead" subway cars all over the property and have been there in times for decades.  What is the big deal?????

Unlike the other dead cars, these were never used for work service or something similar so it seems odd to me that there are just 4 R44s left sitting there as if they forgot to scrap them.

probably just long term storage. 389 is sitting dead in CI yard along with R32 pair 3786-87 which is stripped and vandalized.

the 44 pair in question at CI is 5286-89 which were just leftover remaining cars from the R44 scrapping spree during 2012-13. there are also a handful of old R17s R21s and R22s that are also in the yard (part of the continuous welded rail work train i believe) that are also retired and are awaiting scrap.

Any reason why they are still there? I know those IRT cars were used for offices in yards up until about 5 years ago, but why are four random cars just sitting at CI? Were they slated for preservation at some point? Are their parts cannibalized for SIR cars?
