(MTA) decides to close the entire 53rd Street Line, from 7 Avenue to Lexington Avenue, inclusive. No train can enter or stop at any station.

It was a decision to prepare for weekend work from 9:00 PM Friday, November 30 to 5:00 AM Monday, December 2.

    Reroute: (B)(D)(E)(M)

Also, don't put (E)(F)(M) into 63rd. It's not going to work too.

    (C) increased service over the weekend; runs overnight

    (D) via 8th local between 59th and West 4th then normal route to 205th

    (E) suspended; use (R)(W)

    (M) runs to 96th-2nd as usual

    (W) special service runs between Whitehall and Forest Hills (will only operate if QBL has no GOs that weekend)

(The (B) would have ended by 9 PM and does not run over the weekend.)

That’s not the only way. They can go back to having plain clothes officers do operations and busts on the subways and buses. God forbid they go back to tried and true tactics...

Cops have better things to do than fine farebeaters. I’d rather incur a one time expense for turnstile installation than shell out more of the budget for fare evasion enforcement that could pay only nominally in the long run.

Spending $250 million dollars to save $200 million is questionable for sure when you are cutting service. I don’t see why they can’t address the fare beating problem with a lower price tag...

The only real way to prevent fare evasion in a cost effective way (and frankly this should be done regardless) is to design a better turnstile (which should be done given ADA work as well).

There was a study of this sort done for Lex-53 in the ‘80s. I believe @Union Tpke has a copy. This is definitely something that should be looked into as Midtown East gets even bigger, as well as the 59-63 link because that’s two free platforms right there.

Could crowds potentially decrease at least a little by rerouting the (N) up SAS (the thought process for this being that an increase in SAS frequencies could entice some Brooklyn bound (4)(5) riders to switch over).

Probably a noob who doesn't know all the stops yet. If I was an C/R it would take me a while to memorize stops. If someone put an gun to my head to told me to name all the stops on the (2) line N/B in the BX I'd be a dead man. 149th GC, 3rd Ave, Jackson Ave, after that mind goes blank😄

Ditto for the (6) ... 3rd-138th, yada yada Hunts Point, yada yada Parkchester...

    Three separate incidents happen:

    1. There is an unauthorized person in the express tracks at 23 St/8 Av.

    2. There is a door problem at a (B) train in the northbound express track at 34th St/Herald Square.

    3. Similarly, there is a track fire at the northbound track in Grand St, and it has spread to the other track, forcing the station to close.

    Reroute away!

Also, you can't fit (B)(D)(F)(M) and (A)(C)(E) into the local tracks. Similarly, (B)(D)(F) on Culver isn't going to work without having to reduce the headways or rerouting a line, and is also (A)(B)(C)(D)(E)(F)(M) on 6th Ave, this would cause considerable delays.

    (A) via 6th local to Norwood

    (B) suspended

    (C) via Rutgers/6th local to Inwood

    (D) to 96th

    (E) via 6th local/63rd

    (F) via Crosstown

    (M) to Chambers

  8. I'd imagine a (6) to Co-Op would run on the east side on the Thruway after PBP and end in the space between Bartow and the offramp and Baychester/95. If you wanted, you could eminent domain that lot at the 95/Erskine and have a stop there to serve southern Co-Op but you could just skip over that and have the people there continue to use the Bx23.

In an effort to steer things to some normalcy...

It is 1:00 AM on a Saturday.

    Background:

    • The connection from the 8th Avenue Line to 53rd Street is unusable NB.
    • All of 53rd Street is unusable SB due to signal maintenance and signal repair.
    • (E) trains are running to/from 2nd Avenue
    • WTC is not accessible
    • All Broadway service is running on the local track.

    Scenario:

The 6th Avenue line had to be taken out of service at midnight to fix signals which severely delayed service earlier on. No service is able to run on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. Broadway line remains in service, but there has been a person hit by a train on the SB local tracks at Prince Street.

    Reroute away.

Note: You must first deal with the 6th Avenue situation, then deal with the Broadway Line situation to get a complete list of changes.

    (D) two sections: 36th-CI and Norwood-59th

    (F) via Crosstown

    (N) Two sections: Whitehall-CI and Astoria-34th

    (Q) NB service as normal; very limited SB service-any extra trains are terminated at 34th

    (E) via 60th to Herald Sq

No because the (M) does not run in lower Manhattan:

To me, for this to work, the RBB has to be a line that directly serves lower Manhattan for the RBB to get support from certain outlets that are from outside the US and still look at lower Manhattan as (even if we know better) "The Financial District."  Fair or not, to many non-New Yorkers, even if that area is actually now more residential than offices, it's still looked at by many the old way.

You are such an idiot sometimes...

The entire point of hooking it up to the (A) was to save money.

    1. How many people are actually doing this?
    2. Point or not, linking to QBL would just shove people onto E and F trains that have no room. The E and F are still the fastest way to get to Western Queens.

JFK is a rather major jobs center in the area and I would argue that it would be useful to have a rail connection between it and a large chunk of Queens (it would take a large load off the buses heading there).

As for the issue of QBL being overloaded, you could maybe try and extend the line to LIC on the LIRR if you wanted to kill that issue...

The 34th St merge is ridiculous and not needed, but the (MTA) just HAS to have the (N) stop at 49th St...

And let's not forget the 2010-2016 era where the (N) was the Broadway Local, the merges were so bad that you would have been better off taking the (N) or (Q) and still get to the same place within that timeframe.

It amazes me how we still haven't deinterlined Broadway at 34th- it's a complete killer in terms of capacity and is unneeded as Broadway express does not benefit Astoria since most people are off by 34th anyways...

To get back on topic to the study, would it be possible to make the line part of some RX-like system and have it via the LIRR ROW from the Bay Ridge Branch to the Rockaway junction?
