  1. both bk and bronx do days and nights..if you want bronx nights, youll probably get it
  2. well you report to your home base or whatever you want to call it then crews go out to the site from there..power is atlantic ave in bk or locust ave in the bronx..not sure if any other section is out of manhattan
  3. like i said earlier, won't be going out in the field for a while because of training classes but its running cable whether its telephone, fiber, or 2mil electrical cable..you want brooklyn or bronx and day or nights?
  4. good luck guys..Devon Marks is a dude lol..and the lung capacity test is just blow as hard as you can til you cant anymore lol..you’ll see..ask what section youre going to because I’m sure they know..rumor is 20 more guys coming to cable section
  5. depends how many people they call..mine was only 10..you should know what section you are in the last day you go to 180 livingston..Signals is a section, Power is a section, System Operations, Test, Substations..may be one more but there’s no choice inside one of those..I’m in Power which is Cable Section and these guys make it seem the other sections aren’t as good.. others have rotating shifts while we have a set two days off..day crew has sunday monday and night crew has saturday sunday off..how far along are you guys right now?
  6. Devon Marks maybe? And wait til you do the lung capacity test. lol
  7. I doubt it. Only way your learning this job is to have hands on. I know they need maintainers but coming off the street, not going to know how they operate and what they do. Every helper here wants to become a maintainer. $10+ more an hour.
  8. No, not longer to get hired. After drug test, if you pass, you will come in for medical and you will be there all day, just an assortment of tests (EKG,lung capacity, eye, etc). After you pass all the medical, you will sit down with someone and they will do your paperwork and setup your orientation. You will probably report to 53rd street and will be there for about two weeks. Its a class to get you somewhat accustomed to what’s going on. You will also be going to other places like Coney Island Yard and PS 248. Track Safety and Fire Safety and Prevention. You’re 3rd week, you will usually report to another location. Since I’m in Power, I reported to Atlantic Avenue Cable Section. From here, my class was assigned where they were going and what shift. As far as being backed up, I still have to take Asbestos,Respirator,Confined Space, and Flagging before I can go into the field. Flagging is a 9 day class and the others vary between 2-5 days. I’m on Brooklyn days and everybodys cool and the way things operate here is pretty smooth.
  9. All my paperwork said Signals but my class went to Power. It sounds like they are hiring a lot of helpers. If you end up in Power, its either Brooklyn or Bronx, 8-4pm or 10pm-6am. They asked everyones preference in my class and we all lucked out and got what we wanted. Won’t be going out into the field for a while because most of the certification classes are behind. For me, so far so good, no complaints.
  10. Transit is hiring a lot of helpers. I’ve been in for a month. If you end up in Power opposed to Signals, you’ll either be in Brooklyn or Bronx. My paper said Signals but my class went to Power. The day or night shift is really up to the Gen. Superintendent. They’ll ask you preference but its not a guarantee. You won’t be going out in the field for several months because of the backup with training classes. If you are hired from a resume, you are a provisional (temporary) employee until you take the Transit Electrical Helper test given by the MTA and that list is established. Basically it means you are on probation until they establish your list. Permanent positions (people who took test and were called) have a one year probationary period. Any other questions you guys have, I’ll see if I can answer.
  11. Finished final processing today. Report 4/16 for Orientation.
  12. When I first got called 2 years ago. I went in once and did safety test but then deferred after that. Never did it again. Can’t go by me. I’m off of list 4607 and deferred twice. I have a record and waiting to see what happens this week after being declared qualified.
  13. I went in on Friday for Medical. Waiting for call for final processing. Have to pass their background check.
  14. Will look into that. Can I expect to be working 11pm-7am after training is over?
  15. Thank you. How long til you can take maintainer test? I already have 5+ electrical experience under my belt but I’m sure it means nothing over there. I am leaning towards accepting for the class in April.
  16. Hey. I know this topic has been dead for some time but I assume some of you may have been hired. I took Exam 4607 and deferred two times and now am thinking of taking the position. It is for Electrical Helper Signals 01-F (I believe that’s the correct title). I held off on the class starting this coming Monday the 19th since there is another in April. I have some questions that if you guys could answer or give your opinion, I’d really appreciate it. The starting pay on this job is $21.40 something. It goes into effect on the 16th. I currently make $25 an hour with a raise due in April at my commercial electrician job. My biggest concern is the paycut and not being able to pay the rent and bills. Its been weighing on my quite heavy. I know the benefits and 401k are a no brainer, but I’m more worried about the now. I’ve looked on the seethroughny site to see the salaries of this position and the numbers are mind blowing. Top guy pulled in 100k at $22 p/h. Is the overtime there for the taking? Also, I assume like everyone else, nobody really wants to be working 60 or 80 hours a week and neither do I. How much of your paycheck comes out for health ins., and other benefits? I guess I’m just looking for an inside perspective to help put my worries aside. Lastly, new hires, should I expect to work at night or does everyone start off with a 7-9am start once training is over? I thank you in advance for your answers.
