Far Rock Depot, Thanks for the insight you provided, I am still waiting and for my results but took the OPA in April. I am list 35XX so I prob have some time to go. With all that great info you provided can you give me an idea on how much OT you are actually getting, or what is usually available for newcomers. If they add an unexpected shift for you are they taking another one away?  I am trying to determine what the average 1st or 2nd year Conductor can actually earn per year when you start out with night diff and OT. I want to be able to weigh that when I get called to decide if it will work for me . I have heard a lot of confusing info, (no OT for new hires,... a lot of OT...etc etc..) . I know the hourly rate but what can you really expect to earn when you start?

    Thanks!!

It's kind of hit or miss.  First,  some jobs are called 'penalty jobs". These are jobs that are more than 8 hours and have OT built in.  Then there's what can happen  when you are on board. If you pick up a partial job while on board, OT becomes what you worked past your clear time.  If you pick up a full job,  what ever time you were on the Board becomes OT. It's really too much of a variable to figure out how much exactly you'll make a year when your XX because every-day is different.  As far as "no OT for new hires", I'm not sure if that's true.  If it is,  I'm assuming that means there's no option to work on one of your days off.  Someone else here may be able to give the exact details on that.  But in all honesty, during your first year,  keep your RDOs (Regular Days Off).

Wow thanks for sharing this is the part that scares me the most. I’ve heard in the beginning it’s tough when you first start until you’re able to start picking decent jobs.

Basically,  for the first year,  you are Extra Extra (XX).  That means they schedule you where needed according to the tour you have.    You can have a road job one day,  platform the next then on board the day after that.   You get your schedule three days ahead.   When you Cal the crew office,  they have your next three days scheduled.  BTW,  when you are in Board,  don't expect to get home when you think you will. I once had a 16:00 report at 207th on board with an clear time of midnight. 30 mins before I cleared I picked up at platform job and had to report to Bedford park where the job didn't clear till 6am.

The thing is the manufactures hasn't gain any experiences from the past especially R179 is only a newer version of R160. If you take closer look of the interior of R179, there are lots of things that they should have them done better.

That's not the issue here.  Every class has a slightly different interior. The point with the 179s has been mechanical,  electrical and the Construction of them.

Create your account with your pass and BSC ID. They're really quick with shipping.

Yeah, we get our footwear online now. The contract with the old shoe supplier expired so now we're with Safgard.

Thank you for the update.  I didn't hear about that.

Thats wierd cuz the supervisor was saying that we need to order ourselves today so we can get it for friday cuz we need them to climb the train

Really?  I wonder when that started.  I was in school car back in 2014 and the truck came there so we can get our boots.

The R46s were mated as pairs prior to overhaul, then overhauled, and later made into 4 car sets and renumbered. (Disclaimer, I may be confusing them with the R44- All of the same events happened to both fleets, but not in the same order.)

    Here's a riddle for you:
Between the Pitkin and 207 R46 fleets:
    Median age is the same.
    Mean age is different.

And to add to this, SMS is a newer program than what the fleets went through in the late 80s-early 90s.  That was known as GOH (General OverHaul)

There’s 4 train of R179s and one signed up as the (C)  At Pitkin Yard idk if one of the 4 train is a split 5 car set thou. I have a pic but too hard too upload

What a the car number. You can tell it it's a four car or five car from that.

You should see all the crazy rumors going on YouTube.

One person even said on YouTube that he/she spoke to an employee at Coney island yard and the employee said that the r32's "are going to Concourse yard" Really???? I have to see it to believe that nonsense.

Although, I do admit to share theories about what may or may not happen, I also share info confirmed by the MTA.

"Confirmed" by who in the MTA? Cause if it by a "friend" whos crew or somethimg like that, i hate to break it to you, but most crews dont know either.  And other employee see a railfan and feed false i fo.  Cause they know youll go on the forums and run with it.   Olus, the MTA does have a habit of changimg plans last minute. As a former employee myself, i know this for fact.  Now as far as the G, whonsaid it was going to be 8 cars? Ot could be 10 (or 8-car 68s).  Rememeber, The G needs a small fleet.

    It's just a theory.

Obviously a few months from now, the A will most likely be a mixed fleet of r46's, r32's and r179's, while the C will be full length r46's.

The question at this point would be about the G. It's also going to be full length and it will be one of the lines that will have the highest ridership. But will it be a mixed fleet of r160's, r179's and r32's (8 car trains) or will it be a mixed fleet of r160's and r32's (8 car trains)??

Your "theory" did sound like you had a theory. As in you took it as thays what going to happen.  And thats the problem nowadays with most railfans.  They take something like that and run with it all over social media.   The fact is, outside of the A and C , we have no idea what fleet swaps are coming. The G could see NTTs, or expanded 68s.  We dont know. And unless someone in operatiins planning spills the beans, we wont know until it starts to happen.

In other words, the 8 car r179's and r32's on the C are temporarily on the C to displace the r160's to the G. Then, the 10 car r179's will displace more r46's to the C and become completely full length, and the r32's from the C will probably go to the G, and the 8 car r179's will go to ENY.

    Is that the case???

Well guys things on the A C and G are starting to become interesting!!!

NO! Where the french toast did you get all of that from????

Would've been nice if they could've done this on the (A), a line that hasn't had NTT trains in regularly scheduled service for over +10 years. I'm sure they might soon however, seeing as the (C) already is undergoing testing with them.

@Coney Island Av Amazing shots, especially the last one!

They can once they get a 10 set ready.  If you havent noticed, they only 179s running are the 8 car sets. They are just now getting a full 10 car set on the property

  12. 1 hour ago, subwaycommuter1983 said:

Yes, but I think it will be completely full length after all 10 car r179's are in service.

I have also been seeing more 8 car r32's on the C, which is weird when the r32's can operate as 10 car trains on the C.

Heres the thing: the plan ia to have most of not all of the ten car sets on the A. This will allow their 46s to go to the C.

As far as the 32s, they still dont have enough freed up for 10 car seta on the C.  Yes, you see more on the A now, but that was to replace the 46s they sent to the C. And the 8 car sets you see added to thr C were freed up from the J when 179s went their.  They dont have 32s to spare to add to 8 car sets without breaking up an additional 8 car set.

  13. 41 minutes ago, railfanned said:

Isnt the (C) supposed to be full length now? What sense does it make putting a new 8 car train if they are going to be changed?

Not fully yet.   Not enough cars.  The 32s on the C still run 8.  Theres still 8 car 160s on the line.  These changes usually are never overnight.  Once the 10 car sets start coming in and seeing service, youll see more full length sets on the C

Same thing on the (R).  Those signs are almost 30 years old and at the very least, the MTA should consider putting in new ones.  The technology is relatively inexpensive these days, and the R46s have the necessary conduit.  If they can put in new lights and stanchions, why not new signage?

Because its cheaper to repair those then refit. Especially since the cars that are getting new lights and stanchions have about two decades minimum left in them, unlike the 46s.  Which have what, 6-8 years left in them approximately?

I will say A LOT of the R46s sign glitch... I've seen multiple (A) trains having individual cars in the same train with three different readings on them

I see multiple A trains every day.  For about 3 decades.  And woeked on them as a C/R. It really isnt as much as most of you claim.

But i guess 30 years as a daily commuter, railfan and conductor combined holds no weight right? It never does here.

    I get it!!!

Not everyone in this forum have technical mechanical knowledge of the subway system, but like everyone else in this forum wants the subway to improve.

I don't know if you have been riding the A train, but communication onboard is horrible and the countdown clocks don't always work. This causes confusion among riders.

Can you think of a way to address these communication issues since car fleets cannot be split???

As a rider of the A since 1990, and a formwr conductor let me tell you a few thimgs that will ease the "confusion of riders'- cause that is always thrown around when talking about the A- the riders themselves!!!!

1)most dont bother reading. Thats a fact!  They dont read signs. At all.  There are destination signs that dont work, but its not as much as most of you here like to claim!  Trust me.  Almost 30 years of being on the A as a rider alone(im 41) ive swen that 95% of the signs work 95% of the time!

    2) take off the damn headphones and stop playing your music loud without them! Theres announcements. Most dont heae them and a lot of you hwre havemt taken the A train as much as you lead on. As a C/R, im loud! Ive been loud as a kid.  And my signs were always set proper! But all the time "what train is this? Is this the A? Whats the next stop? Lefferts or Rockaway?" And herea my favorite *removes headphones, music plays loudly* "why didnt you make an announcement?"  Trust me on this, it's the riders.

    3) riders really dont care about train car type! Yeah youll hear some say "why cant we get new trains?"  Thats just because its shiny and new. Once that fades away after a few weeks, a train is a train to them. So having routes by type wont work.  And will be an oporational nightmare!!! Especially at 207! Trust me on that!

Yes, the r32's are one of the most unreliable cars. However, if they run to the Rockaways, preferably Rockaway Park as the A or the Shuttle, they will get more outdoor exposure decreasing chances of breaking down.

In other words during rush hour:

    r179's -Ozone Park

    r46's - Far Rockaway

    r32's - Rockaway Park

But having the r46's going to Ozone Park and the r179's to Far Rockaway may also work depending on ridership.

The reason the 32s needed outaide air was for the air conditioning.  The overall poor performance (low MDBF) is all mechanical issues. Doors, motors, etc.   The 32s running outside will not fix this.

  18. Where do i begin....

Thats not how car assignments go.  First, whatever trains are used go to any terminal its interval is scheduled for. They do NOT do car assignments based on destination. So 32s, 46s and 179s will go to Ozone, Mott and 116.

And I cant stress this part enough:

There are no more power issues in rockaway anymore! Theres a power station in broad channel that was added that solved this!!!! Can that "power issues in Rockaway" die already???

  19. Ok, so I took my pre employment drug test in late may.  I know its only good for 90 days.  Its now September and i have not recieved a letter for another drug test. Im in the 1500s so i know i have time before im called for final processing. Has anyone else got called for a second drug test after the first 90 days expired?
