  2. I just spent three days working the N and Q lines as a conductor. 2 days on the N and one on the Q.

    that is why I know this will not work, it will not make the system better. I have actually been a cog in this machine. I am not looking at numbers on a screen and thinking I know better.

     

    also the M/V was and is a terrible idea because 6th Avenue and QB should not have to deal with 480’ trains. Sure, it’s “popular” but it’s also the first thing cut the moment something goes wrong. We’re making shuttle trips to Essex street  by 8:30 every night and it’s not even going to run at all next week.

    rhe purposes of the SAS is not to help Broadway. The purpose is to run under Second Avenue. Broadway service on the SAS is secondary.


    You all have this mindset that all the lines must be running at absolute maximum capacity… when we can’t do that. We don’t have enough people, enough cars, enough resources, to provide the levels of service you seem to think are required.

    nevermind this is not the service the riding public desires. Astoria does not want just the W (which, need I remind you, doesn’t actually exist) while ram rodding both the N and Q up to 96 is more service than the line needs and more of a risk.

    I would hardly call that a "branch". it was a curve of track to connect the Lower Montauk to the freight yards at sunnyside Yard.

    12-9 at Jay, I'm on the F. I get told we're going over Crosstown. I literally had at least one person angrily ask me "What do you mean we're going over the G train? What the heck is a G train?"

     

  7. Why are we even still having this conversation? We’ve established the 211As are launching on 8th avenue and overall the fleet will only be assigned to CBTC equipped lines.

     

    you guys can go on and on about the N, Q and W all you want, but the simple fact is they are not getting them because the Broadway line will not be getting CBTC in the near term.

    how hard is that to understand?

    That's ether TGC 3 or TGC 4. TGC 1 and 2 are single units.

    I understand the point your making but that has nothing to do with what I said for the test train.

    And why you say? Let’s see, Broadway is one of the busiest lines in the system in which the R211T would benefit. Or it could be Queens Blvd. Or CPW. Point is, it’s to see where the train can handle better for the eventual placement when the entire order is delivered. 
     

    And no it wouldn’t, have two crews qualified to operate the train on each line. They’ve done it before to do clearance testing they can do it again.

    What I said was "to expand CBTC capacity to allow for the 8th avenue CBTC install".

    What that means is ALL the trains that run on the A,B,C and D need to be CBTC compatible. as of the current information I have on hand, there are roughly 87 non CBTC compliant trains running on those four routes in the AM rush. add the Rockaway Park Shuttle, since it draws from the same fleet, we're into 89-ish. THEN add spare factor, and we're getting quite close to 100 trains. 100 trains, times 10 cars, is 1000, obviously... 

     

    As for Broadway, it is busy... yes... but Broadway ISN'T getting CBTC any time soon. It will be getting the R68/As. There is no point in seeing where the 211s operate "better", it will be sent to operate WHERE IT IS NEEDED, which is on lines with CBTC territory. Yes, some 211s could be sent to Queens Blvd in the future, but that is not where they're going NOW. 

     

    Now... you seem to be mistaking just driving the train around with the clearance testing with actually operating the train in service.

    Just two crews? First off, what happens when one crew member has to call out sick.

    And secondly, we don't spend all day on the same trains.

    You would need to have at least THREE qualified crews on hand at all times the train is operating. One at each terminal and one actually on the train. 

    that assumes the trains end up at the correct terminals every time. I've been rerouted before. I've been sent to other terminals and have had to work my way back. I've had trips dropped. I once worked a W sent up Second Avenue because of a very large gap in Q service. I've been turned for service in the opposite direction mid trip because something has gone wrong. 

     

    What I'm trying to say here is there is a logistical complexity to this that you don't seem to grasp..

    Okay.. first off… the R211s are to expand the CBTC capable fleet for the 8th avenue CBTC installation…

     

    why the $&@€£¥ would we put them on the N, a line not getting CBTC any time soon?

     

    secondly. Crews need to be qualified on new equipment. There are new features and details on the 211s that even we are not aware of yet, let alone you guys.

     

    testing them on every line requires every line to have qualified crews that can take the train at a moments notice or have a dedicated crew that follows the train from line to line.

    the chaos comes in because this idea would interfere with the crew assignments because, again, you’re tossing in a train not everyone knows how to handle.

    The entire reason we have the system is to provide people with mobility they might not otherwise have. To tell someone outright they don’t matter because of where they choose to live… that’s just all kinds of wrong. 
     

    we do not exist to be optimized and economical. We exist to provide a service to everyone who wants it.

    if these people want us to be there, then we should be there.

  13. There are two factors here that you need to remember. 

     

    1: the system was designed to be interlined. Core capacity is dependent on there being multiple routes, because the terminals do not actually meet the needs to turn back enough trains quick enough. 

    2: Ridership wants and needs don't line up with what makes sense to you on paper. Take ANY service away from Astoria and the locals WILL riot. They don't want just Broadway locals. They want an express. It might not seem like it, but there is logic behind these service patterns.

    …because there are people who think the entire option 1 R211 delivery can be sent to Concourse and maintained for the D and B.

     

    this is about the potential reassignments as the new cars come online. It’s all tangentially connected in some way.
