  1. Yeah, they seem to be running a lot of Xcelsiors on the S53.

In any case, I caught an O5 on the S44 this morning and one on the S46 in the afternoon. I usually leave around the same time so hopefully they leave them on the runs that I use.

BTW, in the "Social Clubs", is there an O5 fanclub? I'm too lazy to check.

There should be, you'd have to look for it. But if you have a Facebook account, there is an Orion 5 fan page that you can join.

  2. It doesn't make sense to me, since you're right, those routes aren't nearly as stressful (I mean, the M8?) as what you see at FB and other NG depots, and Quill generally has great maintenance on top of that. I keep getting NGs on Quill routes recently, and it's the same story every time -- bottoming out on the bumps and taking potholes badly. 3941 just had to be the worst I've seen, never actually been on a bus where a bump was so bad it felt like a crash. Starting to wonder if it's just the ride quality of the early NGs, since there's no reason the ride should be that awful on a decently-maintained bus on easy routes. Quill's RTSes and even their OGs feel like limousines on the same routes.

Enough of my b!tching though. I just wonder if it's a problem around the city at all, from what I've heard the JFK NGs are starting to show the same problems, but then again, JFK maintenance isn't exactly tip-top on ride.

I wonder if the fact that those 3900s are the way they are is because they originated from Brooklyn. Not saying Flatbush is bad (they're okay in my eyes, but the depot seems small to accommodate and maintain heavy-used lines), but maybe they just didn't have a good start at Flatbush prior to being transferred. The same can be said for the 3800s that were at Castleton.

  3. The S79 can use either deck, but at night the lower deck is closed so they have to use the upper. For the S79 it's not a problem per se, but for the S53 heading to SI the bus has to use Hylan Boulevard because some drivers have difficulty turning onto Fingerboard road due to road construction.

  4. Not necessarily. Keep in mind that local buses take more abuse than the MCIs, because they spend more time doing stop-and-go. Plus, a lot of express buses are rush hour-only, so for the most part, the O5s are in use the whole day, whereas a lot of the MCIs have the middays off so to speak.

Exactly! So if MCIs are soooooooo great then why are the 1998-1999 units leaving while we have Orion 5s and RTS older than the MCIs still around? Still awaiting a proper response....

  5. lol.... Not really... Like I said, the MCIs eat up far more mileage than the Orion 5s... You can't even compare the MCIs to the Orions... The Orions take a backseat to the MCI at all times.

Yeah a bus that makes one round trip that only runs during rush hours eats up more mileage than a bus that operates back and forth all day every day. Please....

  6. Yeah, that's happened to me a few times on the S46. Everybody crammed themselves into the front, so I went in the back and was actually able to get a seat.

And why are you glad you caught 3 Xcelsiors? Are you cheating on your favorite bus type now? :(

    Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lolllllllllllllllllllll

  7. Riding the low floor buses for years now and I can say that it's almost reluctantly that people goes to the back. It's as if people are forced against their will to go there. I have no problems standing back there, but I have to force my way thru the front to get back there. The 2x2 for the back makes sense. If anything, they could make the front 1x1 since that's where the majority prefers to stand.

I remember last year around this time on the S53 (Orion 7 btw) I had to open the back door to get to the back because the bus was so friggin crammed. I was already in the front but that wasn't flying so I opened the back door and got a seat.

On a side note, today went pretty well. Rode three Xcelsiors in one day, which is a first for me (first on the S54, then the S40, and finally the S76).

Apparently St. Joseph's By the Sea (a Catholic High School at Wendy Drive/Hylan Boulevard) was open today and there were school trippers on the S78 from the school. There was an Orion Third Gen on the S78 that I tracked usin BusTime on my iPhone and my friends and I ended up missing it because the S76 we were on made a stop at Milll Road/New Dorp Lane. I hate that the bus stop is so far from Hylan Boulevard, just because the New Dorp High School entrance is located there. They need to adjust that. Either way, I can't complain. I ended up waiting for an Orion 5 on the S79 back to Brooklyn. Thankfuly, no NG hybrids today. But strangely, I didn't ride any Novas today.

  8. Whether I'm on an Orion 5 or Orion 7, there's this bump on Hylan Boulevard one stop before Bay Terrace heading to Brooklyn...if you're going fast enough and you're sitting in the back you'll go flying. Hell, I was on a NG on the S79 and since my friend was driving, I stood in the front. When we hit that bump, my head almost touched the ceiling.

Why pay a crapload of money at Six Flags when you can just hop on an MTA bus for $2.25 and take a flying course? :(

  9. Sat in the back of the O7 3g on the B6 today. I really like that seat pair on top of the wheel well. I can see everything from there and at least know the person behind me is lower and feet can't reach my feet (kicking etc). I love the 3g interior over the Nova lfs. Have yet to ride the Xcelsioers, but as I see more of them it's just a matter of time till i get a ride on one.

Yeah I sat in that seat when I rode the S54 yesterday. I do wish the seating was in a U-shaped pattern like the NGs though...lots of aisle room.

  10. Lol...you like the back seats too?

I've recently got accustomed to sitting in the back seats on the Orion 5s in SI. I used to sit in the front where the door is because I wiuld aleays lean my head against the plexiglass window and take a nap. The only time I sit in the front is if the back seats are taken or my B/O friend is driving, so I stay in the front and talk with them. On the low floors, I always sit in the back. I rarely sit in the front unless my B/O friend is driving, which I usually stand next to them and talk.

While I don't like the Next Gen Hybrids I do like the fact that my feet sorta dangle when I sit in the back seats on the high part of the bus facing forward because the seats are extra high off the ground. On the Original Orion 7s as well as the Third Gens, my feet meet the ground evenly and don't dangle.

  11. Caught 4888 on the S46 today...rode it from Clove Road to Port Richmond Avenue. I was on an Orion Third Gen on the S54 I caught at Richmond/Hylan and checked BusTime on my phone to see if there were any gaps on any of the North Shore routes, but I checked the S46 and 4888 was heading to Forest/Grandview so I decided to hop on for a short ride. From there I took the S59 to the S79...both Orion 5s. Good way to end my day.

I originally was at Saint George at 3:30 to find an Xcelsior and one was getting ready to start on the S51, but then I saw my B/O friend with an Orion 5 on the S74 and I decided to hop on his bus to the Transit Center where he dropped out. So today went pretty well.

  12. LOL.... I get those two brands mixed up... Well you know who I'm talking about... That brand from California that you like wearing. Anywho, I know you like some sort of burger from there since I thought I recall you mentioning eating a burger from McDonald's on the subway or something. What's the difference between the Big Mac and the burger you get? I haven't had one in many years, but my understanding is that the Big Mac is a double cheeseburger with the bread in the middle no?

Hollister. And I buy the McDoubles because I can buy two of them along with an Arizona and they can hold me for a good period of time.

  13. Yes they may be expensive but that doesn't mean I don't support ordering them for the areas that demands for it, unlike certain parts of the city where buses run every hour off peak and is carrying more air than passengers.

Since Riverdale is your new home don't be shocked if the MTA ever orders suburban-styled local buses cuz if it were up to me the Bronx would have nothing but and I'd keep all the Prevosts to myself in SI. :D

  14. Well the engine is just the icing on the cake. I agree that they are loud and it's not a pleasant loud either. Those Prevosts were a waste of money, and you know it's bad when I'm against new express buses. The (MTA) would be much better off w/MCIs. I just feel for the folks that have to ride them because overall they don't like them and I've heard various comments about folks trying to avoid getting them. The seats are cramped even for average sized folks and everything looks cheap on that bus. A total ripoff for $5.50.

Oh please...the MTA would be better off getting whatever they pleased other than catering to your whim because you like MCIs so much...as for me a Prevost blows the MCIs out the water. I hope we get more of them and push more MCIs out the door.

    Prevost leads the way!
