  1. Trust me TA needs at least 650 more T/O's this year alone to get back up to normal staff levels and that's only for this title. Crew shortage is expected this summer due to all the vacations coming up. The next round of letters asking recently retired T/O's to come back and work for 90 days are starting to go out. What's compounding it is there isn't enough TSS's to handle all the new hire classes they need to have as they are short on that title as well. Some days it's hard to even find a TSS to respond to your train if you need assistance.

I just recently got hired for Track Worker but i am also on the Train operator list upper 14xx i was told if i do the train operator training and don’t pass the class i would not be able to go back to my track worker position because i did not past one year probation? Anyone have any information? I’m thinking I should defer until i get that one year under my belt i would hate to lose both jobs if I did not pass Train Operator class. Any suggestions are welcome

That is correct. Complete your 1 year probationary period as a Track Worker first.  Should you not make it thru schoolcar or have an incident as a T/O they can send you back to your previous title. Otherwise you'll be terminated from TA. I would defer.

🤔 is there any chance you’ve failed the drug test?  With this being a safety sensitive title, the MTA very likely uses Methods that detect far lower concentration than standard UA, as well as cheaters. Or do you think the lab would call you to notify you of the positive result?  Since this is an issue I have zero experience with, I have no idea how mta acts when a candidate’s results come back dirty, or their positive/ negative cutoff limits

If you don't get a call back regarding the drug test results that means you turned up negative. It's when you get a phonecall that you should be worried. The drug test standards are set by the DOT which you can view on the DOT website. They run a FULL tox screen for EVERYTHING. At this stage if you turn up postive (if the drug isn't prescribed to you)  or is an illegal susbstance you will not be hired. All the randoms I have taken alomg with incident testing (12-9's) I have never received a call back from drug tests. You should never recieve a call back.

  4. I can tell you all those hoping to get hired as T/O and C/R they are needed. They are short staffed (due to retirements and many who haven't returned back to work because of Covid) and don't have enough road crews. As of right now I have no problem getting an RDO or late clear.  Once this pandemic settles and is under control I truly feel they will go on a hiring blitz like they did when I was called a few years ago.

Dude, where in the world would you ever see that conflicting situation? Been on the road all over and I have never witnessed that scenario. Is this what they are telling folks in school car now? That conflicting fixed signals will be right next to each other? If so, we’re doomed🤦‍♂️😂

Where did you get the idea that it is a conflicting signal?? I really hope you're joking?

    Example:

R10 sign with a 15mph sign at the same location.

The R10 is telling you that your entire train (10 cars) have clear the switch and you may now resume the allowable speed for the area which is 15mph. Come on.....

If it is just a Green R sign with a 15mph together at the same location like Dave2836 said that is telling you to resume the allowable speed for that area which is 15mph. It is NOT a conflicting signal.

There are quite a few locations like that. So you are saying a 20mph sign with a DGT15 right below it is conflicting????  This is exactly why you must know your signals and which fixed sign applies to you.

"Siemens designs and furnishes CBTC/ATS software for the QBL portion of Subway B Division (comprised of the E, F, M, N, Q and R lines)"

Read it carefully. It says nothing about the N and Q getting CBTC. The new ATS signals will be CBTC ready if they decide to go that route in the future. The R160's that run on the N/Q are already CBTC ready.

  7. If it wasn't for the fact they extended the last open competitive twice I don't think anyone who scored below a 92 would have been reached. When I took the test back in 2009 I was told to score 95 or above to have any chance of being called due to the amount of people that took the test.

  8. Not quite... Its a very similar design but the R142 trucks would be unable to support the R179's weight.

Visually it's the same....It's A no brainer that there will be slight design modifications on the suspension..

  9. Apparently the R179 was built 6 inches to short, and the third rail shoes keep getting knocked off the train. I don't think were going to see these things in service anytime soon.

You do realize the R179 uses the same trucks/contact shoes as the R142 right?

  10. I think you have to a passion and a love for trains in order to pass I'll be the happiest person alive once I become a T/O thats my dream job since I was a kid! The money is great etc... But you will only be happy if you really like trains otherwise in my opinion you may be not as happy or miserable juat my 2 cents. Good luck to all I got my test on June 25th at 830am.

I don't believe that's true. I have no passion and a love for trains as a reason for taking this job. I simply saw it as a good paying job with good medical, vacation, promotional opportunity and retirement benefits for me and my family and surprise it's a job I do well. In order to pass you simply need to understand operational rules, keep up to date with bulletins and use common sense. Other than that I don't want to ride or even be on the subway when I'm off duty.

There has been a few that came on the job with a passion and love for trains alone expecting to make it then reality set in once they see how things are down here. Unfortunately some of them are no longer here. That love and passion wasn't enough to get them through.

  11. Thanks man, I understand. Hopefully they won't care. They changed this test so many times, its been delayed so many times, and then boom, it comes out. I panicked. I'm going to do apply anyway. I meet the other requirements.  I had already one job for more than 10 years. No drug issues, never a moving violation. I noticed you need a drivers license now. Thank god no issues with tickets or points ever or even an accident.

    ALSO it says

"You will be required to indicate if you met the education, experience and license requirements on the date

that you are scheduled to take the multiple-choice test."    I might have a shot man. I'm going to give it a shot. Also going to apply for bus operator too. I originally wanted to do bus operator. One step at a time for me.

It's no bigge they'll still let you take the exam but you won't receive a score. On that section they will ask you to list the date you received your GED (which has to be before the application date ended) and from where which you said in your original post was after the filing period ended. They'll just send a letter stating that you didn't meet the educational and experience qualifications section of the test for Train Operator and will not receive a score.

You'll have a much better shot for bus operator since you have everything you need now. Then you can always apply for promotion to T/O once you're in.

Preparing for school car and all of the traveling one topic I haven't seen covered is parking..  I know everyone doesn't travel to the stations by train.  Are the cars that are parked upon the curb the cars of T/O's & TSS..  What's the best way to travel?

My advice is to avoid driving unless you are coming from out of state and the necessity is there. I lived in NYC when I was in school car and took the train/bus for the fact some days you start in on location and may end in other. I didn't start driving to work until after I was finished with school car and became familiar with where to park around the terminals. There will be some terminals where there's no where to park at all or may have to park blocks away.

  12. Hello guys, ive posted here a few months ago. Anyway I got my GED or the tasc dipolma AFTER I applied for this position the recent application for train operator. Not sure whats going to happen. I understand that when you apply for this position it says that you MUST HAVE BY THIS date of the application but I panicked. I applied. I got my diploma now. But it just so happens that it was after I applied.  I had to learn the math, I passed all the subjects easily. The math for the new TASC is harder. Its my fault. But do you think they will okay this ? I mean whats the big deal, I applied for the position and made the payment, and then got my GED/TASC diploma. I didn't know when they will give out the application. And when I saw when they posted the dates to apply, I was shocked. I applied, and then next day made appointment to take the GED/TASC exam took it, and failed just the math, had to take just the math part and past. Now the exam is coming in may. I hope im eligible. Should I call them and explain ? Will they be lenient ? I'm also going to apply for the bus operator too, can I apply to both dates ?

ALSO, lets say im rejected, [because I didnt have a high school diploma by the time I applied] if there is another one, can I apply to that ? MUCH THANKS GUYS.

And yes, im also 40, and I didn't have a HS diploma, because I had a good job, and it was in my comfort zone, and now I need more and better.

If you read the notice of examination you pretty much answered your own question. If you did not meet those requirements by the end of the filing period sorry to say you won't be eligible for the Train Operator position.

    Page 2 on the NOE:

    HOW TO QUALIFY

Education, Experience and License Requirements: By the last day of the application period, you

must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s

Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and

    1. A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York; and

    2. One year of full-time satisfactory work experience that has been continuous with one employer.

If you have serious moving violations, a license suspension or an accident record, you may be disqualified.

You will be required to indicate if you met the education, experience and license requirements on the date

that you are scheduled to take the multiple-choice test. You may also be required to complete additional

forms in regards to the education, experience and license requirements at the time of appointment. You

will be given the multiple-choice test before we verify your qualifications. You are responsible for

determining whether or not you meet the qualification requirements for this examination prior to submitting your application. If you are marked “Not Qualified,” your application fee will not be refunded and you will not receive a score.

  13. Today was the final signals exam. Everyone passed except one person. They're being real strict with the rules now. We also took the YX exam. EVERYONE failed that. Highest score was a 71. I somehow got a 69. Start road operations next week.

As a note, be VERY careful when moving trains! Follow the rules or be a victim of them!

    220 days til permanent.

When did they start doing that?

  14. I resigned for personal reasons as well during school car ,how can I put my name back on the list?

You would have to contact DCAS to restore your name back to the list. Honestly you don't have much time left. I'm hearing that the list will be done away with within 30-60 days due to the promotional list being activated possibly even within the next 2 weeks. I hope you applied for the next open competitive back in December.

  15. Has anyone received anything from the mta yet? When should we expect something?

Has anyone received anything from the mta yet? When should we expect something?

Scroll down to where it says admission letter. Everything you need to know is on the NOE:

    http://web.mta.info/nyct/hr/pdf_exams/7604.pdf

    ADMISSION LETTER

An Admission Letter will be mailed to you about 10 days before the first date of the multiple-choice test. If you do not receive an Admission Letter at least 4 days before the first date of the multiple-choice test, you may obtain a duplicate letter at the MTA Exam Information Center (as indicated above). A paper copy of the Admission Letter is your ticket for admission to the test.

Employees must keep their official mailing address up to date. Only the address on file with the MTA Business Service Center will be used to mail correspondence, including the Admission Letter

  16. In the conductors thread I saw someone say that the current test is going to expire on the 30th of this month (it's supposed to expire Feb 17th) and you're saying the Train operator exam will be finished in March though it's supposed to expire in late 2017.

Is transit allowed to cut the lifespan of a list short like that even though they have datesome set in stone already? I hope it's true because I'm on 6601 with a decent score, but I've never heard of a list being cut short like that.

Also, are you aware of any promotional employees receiving their official scores and list #'.

8098 was originally set to expire Sept 2016 but it was extended until Sept 2017. At this point they can do away with the exam at any time this year.

It's being cut short due to the horrible passing rate in schoolcar (some are not even making it pass probation). They just don't realize how serious and demanding this job is.... They can't keep up with the amount of T/O's they need which is typical when you start getting towards the bottom of the list so they will start off fresh with the promotional's.

My conductor did tell me he was expecting to get called anytime soon for the promotion to T/O. he was the one that mentioned to me they would start in March.

The truth is whoever was hoping to get called this year may be just plain out of luck. Those who do get in from this exam after March will be those already in the middle of the hiring process.

Once the first name is called off the promotional list 8098 will be history

  17. September 19 2017

as long as they are pulling names it's not too late but how often idk , I got my name put back on as well

Just a heads up but they are planning to start calling off the promotional T/O test towards the end of March. Once that happens 8098 will be history. They won't call any more names from 8098 anymore.

  18. I was just about to fork over the $82 fee till I read the NOE and it states I need a valid NYS DL, but further down it says that being a New York State resident isn't required?   Makes no sense.

I took the #6601 and was planning to take this one as well, I live in NJ with an NJ DL but the NYS DL requirement disqualifies me, although I don't have to be a NYS resident to apply.  lol  oh well.

This is exactly how they plan to limit the pool of candidates. You have to read the NOE carefully. No one seems to be doing that. It states a license valid in NYS. It doesn't say you have to have a NYS license. In your case you have a valid NJ license that will allow you to drive in NYS. You've meet that requirement. Read carefully because you'll cost yourself a great opportunity.
