  1. Hey guys, does anyone know if they request the last 5 years, or lifetime driving records?

for reference - There was an accident that was my fault 13 years ago, and a speeding ticket like 10 years ago, and I'm wondering if that would put me in the thanks-but-no-thanks pile before I spend moneydollars on this. Thanks.

When you start the hiring process they will give you a 40 page background booklet to fill out. It will have all the instructions you need. Follow them.

As far as your driving record info yes you will have to list EVERYTHING. Even if you don't remember the date still list the infraction and result.

  2. HI all. not sure if this is the place to post this type of question, I apologize in advance if so.

But I applied to the MTA TRAIN OPERATOR position and

    1)  how long does it usually take for them to call me back for an exam?  I've read around May 2017.

    and

    2)  Where can I buy a study book with test questions relating to the test that I will take in May?

    Thanks so much!

    TJ

Honestly there really isn't anything to study for. If it is anything like the last open competitive it is nothing more than basic reading comprehension and math.

When the exam date approaches you"ll get the notice in the mail for the location and time to report for the test. If you pass expect a 3-8yr wait to get hired. I scored a 98 and waited 3yrs for NYCT to reach my list number. The wait is do to promotional being hired first for T/O so you have to wait.

  3. Thanks for the info. Can you tell me who sets the qualifications for the position of T/O? Is that at the Exams Unit at 180 Livingston? or elsewhere? What I would like to do is ask if they could perhaps adjust the requirement so that they defer the 5 years experience requirement. Like making the cutoff date as the day of appointment to schoolcar instead of the date of applying for the exam.

With the high number of applicants they will have taking the exam they will have PLENTY of people that will meet that 5yr full-time work requirement. As for them changing it to satisfy you is slim to none.

  4. I see. Are those requirements always the same every time they test for T/O? I wonder if they would relax them a bit...?

I don't see them relaxing the requirements to get the job. Even since I've came out of schoolcar 3yrs ago they have actually raised the requirements in schoolcar.
  5. I operated one on my last trip really late the other night. I left out of Brooklyn Bridge around 2312 (1112PM)

  6. Happy Anniversary to me!!

Today marks the end of my 1st year in Transit (and the birthday of this thread I started). I can honestly say I enjoy coming to work.

Congrats. This 1st yr really flew by fast. I just can't wait until tommorrow when I sign in and see "probationary" taken off my name lol.
  7. We've been in schoolcar for exactly 6 weeks now but with our class being the pilot class I'm hearing that we're getting our tests and practicals sooner than the previous classes. If that's the case then I actually prefer it that way. Get all my testing out the way upfront so that I can just focus on fine-tuning my operation.

Reason most likely they want to get you guys out to the yards asap.

  8. Actually the leaving signal was hit. The person was focused on the gap filler signal off to the distance and forgot to check the leaving signal which is closer as well as it's associated stop arm which is not visible unless you stand up and if you are of a certain height you won't even notice the leaving signal unless you make a mental note to lean forward and double check it.

It happens. It's a learning experience for everyone out there in the field.

That's why I always lean forward to check it after I get my indication, creep up slowly until the GF signal clears and it's smooth sailing after that.

Last Friday I got to put-in the R62A on the 6 line from Westchester yard. The dispatcher asked if I had my tools for it. I was like of course I always have all my tools with me lol.

  9. Signal Test:

    READ THE RULE BOOK!

If you get a question wrong on the signal exam and it's multiple choice, you are done.

If you get a question wrong on the signal exam and it's a write in, you will have one chance to explain yourself - and then you'll need to quickly pull out and display something that you either received in schoolcar ("signal study guide") or your rule book - and point out EXACTLY how the answer you wrote is the same as the one that's in the book.

That means you cannot reference any of the following:

    -Web sites

    -Your own notes

    -Someone else's notes

-The "signal study" flashcards that go around

    -anything else "unofficial"

The signal test is not designed to be hard, but that doesn't mean you can be anything other than on point.

And even though it's not completely necessary to learn signal definitions exactly word for word as it is for other agencies (although the definition itself must be exactly the same of course), try and do it - it's better off in the long run anyway, and you'll retain it better.

What I did was learn every defintion word for word excatly as stated in the signal guide schoolcar provided but for those of you starting school car what SubwayGuy is absolutly correct.

  10. Hi All, I have a question on the 21 page book. In the section for the traffic offenses i had 2 moving violations from 2008 and 2010. When i got a copy of my abstract from the DMV it only showed the the 2010 violation. I'm guessing the earlier one is gone from the record, Should i still list the 2008 ticket in the booklet or leave it out?

    Thanks

You must list any traffic offenses you ever recieved in your life. It clearly asks for you to list every single one you've had. Leave anything out and they find out and your gone. The 21 page background booklet will come with a 21 page book with instructions for each question.

  11. Once your finally sworn in. When are you measured for uniforms? What type of uniforms are given to you? And are you charged for it?

You will be measured for uniforms around the 3rd day of orientation. The MTA pays for your uniforms. It consists of the train operaors uniforms (White shirt with grey strips and blue work/dress pants, winter coat/ hats, tie etc..)

  12. The other day was the longest day I've had so far. I fell to the board at White plains then picked up half a job at Pelham and finished at Weschester yard for a lay up.

After almost a month being spoiled on the R142's I'm back on smee euipment today lol.

I'm really liking the new badges Harry. Nice.......

  13. Had my first track fire today. It was interesting, pm rush south of grand central. Train was packed and i had to shut down the hvac. I then sat there and watched the fire burn while control asked if its safe to go past. Had 2 superintendents walk down from 42 and put it out. It all turned out ok.

Because of that I was crawling all the way to 14th St. I thought I was never going to get to Flatbush. I almost got turned at 86th St.

  14. More road posting?? Didn't you guys just get back from posting?

Was on the 4 for 2 weeks...one thing I learned is while that express run in Manhattan is awesome, it absolutely SUCKS during rush hour when you're following other trains!!

And also learned why its so important to get your rest. Its very easy to nod off underground...very scary!!!

Looks like the crew office is keeping me on the (4) as well. It's not a bad line. Just sucks that this evening I start at Utica and clear at New Lots. I have a long treck back home tonight.

  15. No one hit a signal to when we went down the road today. 2 trips. Burnside to Bowling Green to Burnside to Bowling Green to Mosh Yd. There were, however, 3 dumps.

I did dump twice and put a bonnet out of one station our first time down the road a couple of weeks back. It was nerve racking enough to get control of my train.

Lol I guess that's why my follower was 20 mins behind me when I pulled into Mosholu Parkway today. I was like that can't be right. I said to the T/O I was posting with something is plugging up the road behind us.

  16. Hope they werent from our class either. I havent heard anything other than a mc slip while stopped at a station.

Why is that such a big deal?! I know they dont want you going bie, but if you're stopped at a sta and you mistakenly let go of the mc why do they take it so seriously??

Yeah I heard about that one. He was reaching for the route request box and didn't keep enough pressure on the master controller while reaching out the window and it dumped.

I noticed today when leaving Grand Central 42nd St heading to 59th st on the express track there are quite a few new signals (I counted about 5-7 new signals) installed along the way that are not operational yet. I'm guessing those are going to be new timers to slow us down coming into 59th St northbound on the (4) and (5).

I'll be keeping an eye out for that bulletin.

  17. first day out of school car. I feel official now!! We are posting for today up until next thursday with a road T/O. Im guessing after that we'll be pounding the road like everyone else!

Lol same here. When I was asked this morning in the crew room if I was a student T/O I was like nope. I'm a probationary T/O as of yesterday B-)

  18. Was sworn in yesterday for the 3/25 class!! List #580-600

That's awesome. Wish you success. Schoolcar will go by fast. I still can't believe only 5 days of class left on my schedule. Damn the time flew by.

Congrats and good luck. It will go by faster than you think. For those of you that are getting ready to finish school car this week or next week, you won't be pushed out onto the road on your own the very next week after your done training. They will put you on a daily job with another train operator and you will post that same job for a week or 2 straight. That's what they did with my class. I've been working the same job with the same T/O since I finished training. It's kinda like road posting but it's not. They say they do this over in the B div all the time so I guess they are bringing it over to the A. Each one of my classmates is on a different line.

Yeah I saw one of your classmates on the 4 yesterday morning. That sounds good. Next week I will be out of schoolcar.

  19. Passed folks up, folks saying thanks but no thanks folks not getting back to them..

When MTA calls you better answer or they will skip right over you...

They Need T/O's down here, Folks are starting to run outta here..

They had Two Bids out for Open Jobs two sheets each, i cant remember the last time that happened.

When I was at Flatbush the other night I was looking through Bid sheets. Man some of those jobs are sweeet. With S/S off too. I need to hurry up and gain some senority.
