  1. Yeah, once i found out you dont need a degree for train operator i really lost all my motivation. I went to Polytechnic University (now called NYU-Poly) to become an "engineer" but the job i really had in mind was "locomotive engineer", or "train operator".

Well get yer motivation back because I'm pretty sure the classroom instruction aspect of school car will be set up similar to a college curriculum and if this is what you really want you CANNOT fail. That is not an option.

  2. It wasn't "anti-Bronx". Im just saying, because of our economic condition and the way our schools are run, we dont get the same level of decent education as the rest of new york. I didnt really learn too much until i got to high school, which i attended in manhattan. Even then it was too late because when i got to college i couldnt really compete with everyone else, so i dropped out. Maybe im just an idiot, but im definitely NOT anti-Bronx

Lol that explains it. You're an idiot. I graduated from a Bronx highschool with Merit, went to college 6yrs later (after my tour in the Marines and deciding 2yrs later to obtain a degree) and gradutated from college on the Presidents list (3.5 GPA or above). I really don't think the schools failed you. You failed yourself... college drop out....

I would give you some respect if you dropped out for financial or family hardship reasons but you failed out so just please do not blame the Bronx for you failing yourself...

  3. you have to figure that everyone in the next class will have 97.5 or better exam score. you also have to figure that because of the socio-economic and education conditions of the Bronx, most people with scores that high will be picking B division.

Thinking about it you really can't knock the education in the Bronx. I've lived in the Bronx since I was 2yrs old, attended school and college here yet I scored higher than you on the exam and are higher on the list than you lol!!! What happen there?? Can't really knock the education can ya. :DB-)

Like another poster said every borough will have it's good and bad areas. That holds true no matter where you reside in the city. It's all dependant on where you chose to live. The Bronx actually has nice areas where it feels like your living in the suburbs believe it or not.

  4. i figure it wouldnt be a crap shoot if im at the bottom of the next class anyway. you have to figure that everyone in the next class will have 97.5 or better exam score. you also have to figure that because of the socio-economic and education conditions of the Bronx, most people with scores that high will be picking B division. even though i currently live in the Bronx, i JUST got into contract on a co-op in Jamaica Estates, so the A division would be hell to get to unless they put me on the (7) line every day :(

I have a score of 98.75 and live in the Bronx. What does the socio-ecomomic and education conditions have to do with them wanting to pick the B division??? I'm hoping for the A division simply because it'll be closer to home but I'll take either.

So what your saying is because I scored high on the exam let me pick the B division because of the conditions in the Bronx??? That makes absolutely no sense what so ever sir... <_<

  5. First day was all paperwork and speeches. Over half of the train operators in this class is from the promotional. Mostly former bus operators. So this isn't a full OC list class. No word on divisions yet.

Cool so I really hope those are the last of the promotionals. Hopefully there aren't anymore still waiting for classes.

  6. Is there an easy way to get your criminal background? I had an incident when I was 17, (20 yrs ago) still in high school. Stupid, but still an incident. I'm pretty sure it was expunged but I want to make sure.

Just go to the courthouse in the county where it happen and ask for a complete record. I think it'll cost about $25 for a copy. It'll list all charges/convictions you ever had.

  7. I went today and got the booklet. There are 50-60 people showing up. Some of them are showing up for other positions. I finished by 10am. The booklet they gave to fill out is very specific. I briefly took a look at it. They want you to list every job you had since high school. I'm not sure if that includes every temp job, because it says something about temp jobs being 4 months or something like that. I had a lot of temp jobs for 1 week. Somehow I feel that I might not become a TO, because of this background check :D The urine test wasn't a pleasant experience for me :(

Follow the instructions exactly and you will not have any issue. This booklet is actually pretty simple. It looks like a headache when you first recieve it but it really isn't that bad. Lucky for me I have only had about 6 jobs since highschool. I been at them each about 2-4yrs so I didn't have much to fill out in the employment section.

  8. all this waiting to come in for my medical is nerve wracking...

Tell me about it. This wait is worse than the 3.5 yr wait for the list to be established lol  It's only been about 2 weeks since I went in for the pre interview but it feels like over a month ago..

  9. Called Employment today and the lady that answered said they have appointed 7.......7 people? Are they way off or what the heck is going on. 7 people out of, seems to be low 300's going for pre-employment and up to at least 100 or so for the 2nd physical.... WOW!!!!! Come on low, low low, 400's!!!!!

She might have meant last person appointed was in the 70's... and more than likely the class that starts next Monday has thier 40 students.

  10. was this the packet they sent to u b4 ur first appointment to 180 Livingston for ur wiz test?? I thought someone said they want employment from High School??

Easy way to sum it up. When you get the letter/pre employment application then go to 180 and recieve the 21 page booklet follow the instructions and list what they tell you too. In the mean time if you havn't recieved the letter yet start gathering all your info (work history, arrests, convictions, driving history, past drug test results, civil services jobs applied too, etc) from your entire life and you won't have to worry about missing anything. From their all you have to do is follow the instructions in the booklet and you're good to go :).

  11. Hey guys. Thanks to all who took time to answer questions and provide all the information here. And congrats to all who've been called in. I've been lurking on the forums for the past 3 years since I took the test and just registered. I'm listed in the low 300's and received the letter as well to come in this week. It's very unfortunate, but with plans I have upcoming for the summer of 2013, I won't be able to take the position at the moment. If I were to receive this letter this time next year, I would take it in a heartbeat. I currently have a stable job, so I can't complain. BUT, I still want to be a TO. So onto my question(s).

What is the difference between declining via mail and declining at pre-employment interview? Will I stilI listed if I decline by letter? Which is better? What are the chances of being called back if I decline now?

    Thanks in advance.

It's the same I believe not to sure. If you change your mind next year you would have to contact DCAS to reinstate your name back onto the list. You have until the list expires to do so.

  12. wait, we're not allowed to sleep in the waiting area? i have to be there at 7:30am on friday and i work evenings. that's like midnight to me

You'll be just going in for urine and hand in your preemployment booklet. If you get thier early and are first to be seen you should be out not later than 0930. when I was there i was first in line and was back home by 0945.

  13. I'm in the low 150s - took my urine test on 10/3 - I hope I'll get called back soon for medical/final processing. Should I be concerned that I haven't gotten that call yet?

I'm in the mid 140's. I did my urine test on 10/2. I havn't gotten a call yet to come back for the medical/final processing so don't be too worried. We may get our calls this week. If I get thru the medical I am already expecting to be placed in the 11/12 class.

  14. I got my phone call at 6 pm tonight to report to 180 Livingston Street Thursday at 7:30 am for "Physical and Final Processing."

    Here goes nothing.

Congrats man. Wow I never knew they would make calls so late in the evening. Hopefully I'll be getting my phone call in the next couple days for medical/final processing.

  15.

Just because you went to criminal court doesn't mean you were convicted of a felony. That statement is irrelevant. I have personal knowledge of someone becoming a T/O with a felony that spent time in prison. Unless he lied to everyone for 5 years and now lies to his wife about where he is going everyday for the past 6 or 7 years now. And yes he was an Open Competitive as well. Things and people can change. Because it is a criminal court means squat.

Read carefully that's why I said recent or multiple convictions.. Take it easy man....Someone is offended lol!!....

  16. Could u be disqualified from this job title if someone has a dui and a license isn't required for the position

Yes there is a chance if it is recent or you have multiple convictions. Your operating a motor vehicle under the influence. Won't look to good with the MTA trusting that person to operate thier trains. Also DUI falls under the criminal courts jurisdiction.

  17. Elantra thanks for the help..I'm out of state tho don't have a NYC licence do u know how that goes?? Sorry for bombing u with questions..I might just go get a driving history

Just write down your license and state where issued in booklet where it tells you too. Like Dan05979 said a driver license isn't really needed for this postion. They just want you to list it if you have one.

From what the lady told me when handing in pre employment booklet last week she said they are more just concerned abut DUI's if anything. I had listed my violations but she made me remove that page and put N/A on the blank one.

  18. Thanks guys for the quick response appreciate it..could the DMV give me a record of my driving history does any1 know?? Like said have no idea the dates of the tickets its been a longggg time

The driver abstract the NY DMV will give you only goes back about 3yrs for traffic violations I believe. If you said it's been 12yrs since your last ticket then your abstract will print out with no traffic violations or points listed. Suspensions/revocation/DUI's will show on it if within the past 10yrs.

I went to get mine printed last week to help fill out the 21 page booklet and not one ticket showed up on my abstract. It has been over 5yrs since my last moving violation. Only thing that showed up was when I switched over my North Carolina driver license to a NY driver license... Could have kept that $5 in my pocket :P

You will just have to do your best to remember all the dates/tickets you recieved as the MTA will be able to obtain them all.

  19. Can someone just verify..I saw they want 10yrs employment history & I've seen they want back to high school which is it just so I know if I have to get a SS history not sure of my dates back to HS

Also as far as driving record is there such a section in the 21 page booklet?? I got a bunch of speeding tix before but havnt gotten any in has to be 12 yrs just trying to get ahead of this stuff if I have to get documents anything appreciate and help guys everyone has been nice in helping out

In the 21 page booklet yes they will ask you to list all traffic violations you recieved. They will ask you to list license suspensions/revocations as well.

  20.

i have also read somewhere in this thread ( or some other :) ) someone mentioned # 799...so now a bit confused....

Although...it is entirely possible they will go through as much as 7-800 ppl to find the 120 needed for next 3 classes...maybe even more considering how many people i see plan to "refuse" employment at this time....and i am talking about ppl with lower #'s

I wonder what will be the going after these 3 classes this year...will they have more in the beginning of next year or the rest of us will have to sit and wait "patiently again  " for another year or more???

    just sayin'

The 799 you saw is from the conductors open competitive list. They have only called up two about the mid 300's on the train operator open competitive list... MTA is currently hiring from a couple lists right now for different jobs.

After these 3 planned classes for T/O it will depend on how many more (retirements, resignations or terminations) are needed. Remember not all 120 hired by December will complete school car. If 20 people don't make it pass school car they will have to hire 20 more by spring in addition to other planned classes to make up for that loss.

  21. 10/22 is the day the class is scheduled to start.

Now I'm a bit worried. I'm hoping if I get hired for the October class. I would have been able to at least put in a 2 weeks notice with my current employer. That's only about 2 weeks away. I am still waiting for a call back to do the medical/final processing.
