One person was killed after an out of service Nassau Inter-County Express bus and a passenger vehicle collided in Old Westbury Wednesday, Nassau police said.

Police say a car traveling northbound on Glen Cove Road hit a Nassau Inter-County Express bus head-on near I U Willets Road in Old Westbury.

The crash happened at around 4 p.m., said Nassau police Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun. Glen Cove Road is closed in both directions from Hillside Avenue to IU Willets Road, police said in a traffic advisory news release.

A 12th grade student in the East Williston School District was reportedly killed after a car and bus collided. A NICE spokesman said the bus driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

NICE spokesman Mark Smith said in an emailed statement: "This afternoon an out-of-service NICE Bus traveling south on Glen Cove Road was stuck by a vehicle heading northbound. There were no passengers on the bus at the time. The NICE Bus driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. We are cooperating closely with the local authorities in their ongoing investigation."

  2. This was confirmed to be 1897 which hit several parked cars on Merrick Road just before 5 p.m. on Thursday. Police said there were no serious injuries from the crash.

Some cars were totaled, at least one where the impact from the bus completely reversed the car's position on the curb. One of the light posts that lines Merrick Road was flattened on the street.

A spokesperson for NICE would not discuss the accident while they are still investigating. However, witnesses say the driver's brake failed, causing him to plow into parked cars.

A witness also saw sparks coming from the bottom of the bus and thought it would go up in flames.

  3. Not nearly as many smashed windows in this auction as compared to past ones. Also, at least one bus is marked in the auction as being able to start.

Are you going to re-upload some of the images here from the auction like I've done in past threads for archive purposes?

n20, n21 - Buses will also stop at the north side of Great Neck LIRR

Some drivers coming into Great Neck already do this anyway so that they can drop off passengers and then go right to parking on N Station Plaza for layover. I guess this change makes it consistent.

20 hours ago, BM5 via Woodhaven said:

n24, n78, n79 - Buses will stop with the n80 at Hicksville LIRR  (south of the train station, on Newbridge Road)

There was some conversation behind this during the last public meeting. The accusation was that buses in the current n24/n78/n79 bus stop under the tracks were blocking a lane of traffic while they were there and it was disruptive to traffic on Newbridge Rd. One of the members of the panel raised this and suggested that there needs to be some sort of a dedicated area for buses.

  7. A couple of updates:

    1) The contract with Veolia has been extended to 2024 by Nassau County - no community meeting held to vote on that. "It was extended per the emergency of the pandemic" - Jack Khzouz

    2) No service to Manhattan with NICE is planned anytime soon. That proposal/study that came out a few years back is not being actioned at this time.

    3) Mitchel Field is being outfitted with charging stations in collaboration with New Flyer and ABB. One station can charge two buses.

    HohA50Q.png

    4) The plan is that, even though the XE40s are slated for 240 miles of range on paper, NICE will count on 180 miles of range for a day of service which should cover a shift. There will also be a service vehicle with a charger added to the maintenance department to use if the bus loses a charge out in the field.

    5) Per the CEO, NICE is looking to get additional articulated buses next year (they are "pleased" with the New Flyers) and expand them onto the n4 route as well.

    ------------

Also, a random note since there was discussion about cut routes above, in this evening's community meeting, PinePowerLI asked for the n45 to be restored.

New Flyer of America Inc. has received a new contract from the Nassau Inter County Express (NICE) for six battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG™40-foot buses.

The five-year contract includes options for up to 30 battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ 40-foot buses.

With the order, NICE becomes the seventh agency in New York State to purchase zero-emission buses from New Flyer. NICE is the local bus system serving Nassau County, parts of western Suffolk County and eastern portions Queens, New York, providing more than 20 million passenger trips per year.

“NFI is steadily increasing its EV presence on the east coast, and this is directly due to aggressive zero-emission leadership and action by transit agencies across New York State,” said Paul Soubry, president and CEO, NFI. “NICE is an established leader in sustainable mobility and continues to build momentum. Since 2015, NFI has delivered 115 low-emission compressed natural gas buses to NICE. Together, through the transition from low to zero-emission mobility, we’re building cleaner, quieter, more livable communities across Long Island – with the added benefit of each EV delivering up to $125,000 in maintenance savings and up to $400,000 in fuel savings over its 12-year vehicle lifespan. This is smart mobility in motion.”

New Flyer says its Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ battery-electric buses provide up to 525kWh of power and 250 miles of range on a single charge. Introduced in 2021, the Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ bus incorporates high-energy batteries that extend range up to 13 percent, advanced protective battery packaging for easy install and simpler serviceability and a new lightweight electric traction drive system with up to 90 percent energy recovery, according to the company.

“Nassau Inter-County Express has selected New Flyer as our new battery-electric bus vendor,” said Jack Khzouz, CEO, NICE. “We plan on deploying these energy-efficient vehicles for the launch of our new bus rapid transit system, which will provide Nassau County with zero emissions travel between new lifestyle and employment centers. They will help NICE improve accessibility and connectivity within Nassau County.”

Depends on whether 10'6 is the absolute clearance or not. (If it's not, then it depends where the sign is posted and the physical attribute of the overpass)

Reason for the ask: I found this online (go to 1:02:05) - an XN40 makes it under the LIRR tracks in Massapequa Park which is not part of normal routing:

How would you all rate NICE’s maintenance and service overall nowadays?

I never had a reason to be in Nassau County a few years back so I never experienced NICE at it’s worst, but I heard it was bad. I only started using NICE starting from September 2020 and so far my experience has been decent to my surprise. I haven’t experienced breakdowns and or missing runs, so it seems that they have gotten somewhat better compared to before.

From what I recall breakdowns were a common thing even under Long Island Bus. I do certainly remember PinePower lol making his videos back then about how terrible LI Bus was. I know Nassau was being stingy back then so there was only so much the MTA could do.

A quick search on YouTube brought up this recent video that took place a few weeks ago so looks like they are still happening:
