Noticed a few 4××× NG hybrids getting scrapped at zerega (pcs, radiator, and high voltage cables removed). Anyone know why such young buses are getting the axe? I assume that they need either a traction motor or traction generator and are not worth fixing...anyone know the actual reason for the early retirement?

NVM...they look like they have been under water. 4372 and 3968 so far. There were 2 others, but I didn't catch the numbers

Operating in diesel only mode would eventually kill the computer, and drive maintenance costs up significantly. Not only that, but if you operate in that mode for too long and consistently you will start to develop other problems. That engine is not made to operate on its own power at all times. It is a Cummins ISB. The Cummins straight diesel buses, including the bus company repower are more powerful ISL's. You will start burning up oil, and blowing turbochargers. The electronic engine controls on that bus wouldn't know what to do. An RTS or any other Detroit (DDEC) system for example will shut the bus down at first detection of a problem so as not to worsen a situation.

There is no diesel only mode on our hybrids. The diesel engine only runs the ACTM (hybrid generator) and other accessories. The "diesel only mode" you guys are referring to may be the PCS emergency override switch.

I'd argue that one reason so many refuse to pay is due to the lack of on time buses/subways trains and the fact that as of late the trains have been delayed nearly everyday. I seee alot of people complain about the lack of trains coming on time and the fact they leave two hours earlier and are still late.

The mentality is that why pay for sub par service?

If they don't want to pay for sub par service, they shouldn't use said sub par service.

is college point the main repaint center for NYCT and MTA Bus?

Definitely not true. College Point and any other depot with a paint booth will paint sections or panels on buses as after an accident repair. Scheduled overhaul painting is done exclusively at Zerega and Grand Ave CMF (mostly at grand ave cmf). Even buses overhauled at ENY go to grand for paint.

Would 7616 & 7617 head to Flatbush since they are ready and wrapped for SBS service? Will the allotments change for Bush and East New York change as a result of the SBS82 being postponed?

Noticed that 9503 is still at the facility and hasn't been delivered over to Grand Avenue. I'm only guessing that GA is making room thus getting rid of some 40xx buses and presumably some RTS to make room for the XDE's? Correct?

Saw 9503 at grand on friday

The issue with GILLIGs, is the spec. GILLIG literally will let you either ruin the bus or get the best built bus. Every piece of a GILLIG is up to the property ordering it. Right down to the suspension. MANY take the off the shelf GILLIG which is actually more of a medium-duty spec, which then you get your crappy rides and horrible build. But those that have spec'd heavy duty GILLIGs, get a VERY good bus. It wasn't until I experienced the Minneapolis GILLIG that I got impressed, DASH in Alexandria got a good spec, Ride On in Maryland has a good spec, I was even impressed with the GILLIGs ordered by San Diego, but again, they spec'd them right. All of that matters.

As for the Novas, they always rode well. But the first gens were rather rough in other areas, Nova got it right with the second generation all around and the third and fourth generations are tanks! BUT again even the Nova LFS can suffer from a poor spec. The New York MTA Novas tend to ride a bit more rigid than any Nova I've ever experienced. The TA spec'd horrible tires and are now changing over the tires. The buses with the changed tires ride a lot more softer. Its crazy, but yes something as simple as a certain tire will change the whole ride quality of a bus. I find that LFS buses with Michelin, Firestone and Bridgestone tires ride like a coach and LFS buses with Goodyears tend to ride like bricks.

I as a bus owner have seen that with my own bus. I changed my rears to Goodyears as a temporary gap until Im able to get some Firestone FS400s and I noticed immediately a harder ride on the rear of my bus.

You sure you running the right pressure in your tires? Overfilled tires ride harder that properly filled tires.

Are you talking about that smell of diesel fuel in the rear of the bus? I think that's what the smell is, I love that smell, makes those RTS's feel so old school.

I think it's more the wooden floors that are giving off that "aged bus" smell

Do you take them on the bus or use a car? Seems like the obvious question to ask since you have little ones.

When it's all of us together, car. My wife and I, with the baby, will use the subway once in a blue moon. Never on the bus though, it's too much of a hassle for us, and an inconvenience to everyone else

  10. I have 4 kids, the youngest being 3 months old. I feel that if these people have babies and know that they will be using the bus to get around, they should buy strollers that can easily fold with 1 hand. We don't have 1, but I've seen them while shopping for our current stroller. They are moderately priced at $200-$400.

  11. All the depots in Manhattan were originally MaBSTOA except for the old 126 St, which was a TA depot. Once 126 coded and Hale reopened, that became a TA depot.

MCH is an OA depot that happens to have a lot of TA people From 126th street working there. They got a 1 time deal to either be rolled back into TA Brooklyn seniority or OA seniority.
  12. But on Feburary 9th, Gun Hill borrowed some Orion 7 HEV and CNGs and Novabus RTS's from WF and QV and the drivers were from GH. GH didn't need to be re-trained.

The difference is only a couple buttons, the height of the bus, and the feel of the acceleration. That's something that can be ran through as the bus is given out during am service.
  13. Lets just say if New Flyer makes express coaches, like they did with D45IT. If they was to make Xcelisor buses, what kind would they make?

What's this I hear that the MTA wants to make Bronx/Manhattan all Novas and Brooklyn/Queens all New Flyers, and Staten Island being the wild card?

Sent from my iPhone using NYC Transit Forums mobile app

iirc, New Flyer owns MCI. They don't need to gamble on introducing another expiermental otr coach.
