  1. Yea, at this point, R188's being in service aren't that special anymore. You rarely have to wait more than 10-15 minutes for one to show up. And I swear, 7888-7898 have been stalking me for the last month since I first rode it back before it had ads. 3/5 times it's the train I catch, and every other time, it's the train that follows the train I catch, or it's the train that's pulling into the lower level of Queensboro as I walk down from the upper level to exit the station. That, or I'm walking to lunch from the office (north of queensboro to south of queensboro) and that set passes overhead.

7888-7898 was my "stalker" in the first month of service, I've ridden it like what, 5 times in it's first month (pre-advertisements, ever since it got ads I've never rode it again).

But now, it seems like every set's my stalker.... 85% of my (7) train rides now are R188... (not even trying)

  2. I have almost NEVER seen 7860-70 in service. 7877 seems to be trailing 7876 everytime, everytime 7876 leaves GC, 7877 is the following train. I have seen 7876 a lot recently. Haven't been on the 7 in over a week though. I have been on every R188 set with the exception of 7822-32 and some of the converts, though I had a very easy chance to board 7832 many times. I have only seen 7860-70 in service ONCE out of all the times I have been on the 7 this year. I don't know what is happening with that set.

EDIT: By the way, the vandalism set (7833-7843) now has a new case, 7835 has a scratchitti'd window. These things are getting beat up FAST! 7844-7854 has brakes that don't sound normal, rather a bit intense/screechy.

Actually, when 7860-7870 was still new, I got to ride on 7865 and 7866 by luck twice. On one of the G/O's where trains terminated at 74th Street, I got off 7857 for the next train going to Queensboro, and got on 7867. Then I kept seeing that set for a few more times, until I didn't see it much again.

My goal is to be on every end of a set, so here's my progress:

    7811/7821: Done

    7822/7832: Done

7833/7843: Still need to be on 7833

    7844/7854: Done

    7866-7870, 7860-7865: Done

7855-7859, 7871-7876: Still need to be on 7855, although I have been on 7857.

7877-7887: Have never been on it once, although I did have an opportunity to get on 7877.

    7888-7898: Done.

7221-7230: Still need to be on 7221.

7231-7240: Haven't been on it yet, though I did have an opportunity to get on 7240.

7241-7250: Still need to be on 7250.

Not to sound too much like a foamer though! :P

Going back to 7860-7870, I've been on that set 3 different times and I have seen it many more times.. though it was said that 7868 had stuck brakes/dead motors making it screechy. I heard it myself seeing it once, but I'm not sure if it's OOS due to that reason.

  3. You're going to start to find that they are everywhere now.... especially during the weekends, last weekend I'm guessing that it was 50% R188 and 50% R62A. I've been catching R188's easily for the past few weeks, with the exception of one going via Flushing Express to Manhattan.

On another note, does anyone have a clue as to what's with 7860-7870? I saw that set sitting in the yard on Saturday, and I haven't seen it in service for a while. It seems that the two mis-matched sets are seeing service the least, they're already running 7877-7887 pretty much daily (with the exception of maybe a day or two) and same case with 7888-7898.

  4. The one thing I love about R46.... They buck like crazy. Going thru the Cranberry Tunnels on the (A), I felt like I was riding a rollercoaster or something, it was shaky like hell and I actually liked it. A lot of the older SMEE's had that pre-retirement, but I'm glad I got that feel again from riding the slants through the tubes.

  5. The wiring is part of the CBTC installation, isn't it?...

I don't think so when it's at Kawasaki. I think it's just for the new cab and such. The CBTC gets installed by the CBTC contractor, right now the trains don't have CBTC yet except for 7211-7220.

  6. Thank you! Someone agrees!

About this conversion issue, it really is starting to get crazy. I mean, it seems like 7211-7220 are dead. 7221-7230 are ok. I don't know what the hell is happening with 31-40. 41 looks like crap apparently. I don't know about 7250. 51-60 are still testing. It gets only a little better going up but it still depends on the car. And seriously, adding CBTC equipment and changing strip maps is really cheap. I guess at this point we should be greatful they are even testing them before placing them in service.

7211-7220 has CBTC installed already, and was undergoing CBTC testing in the yard but I didn't see it the other day. 7221-7230 is probably the best condition conversion set out there,, at least on 7230 they fixed up some door stickers (the ones from the (6) were distorted and ripped) and was cleaned up a bit. 7241 is absolute disgusting.... air bubbles in the floor, RUST, vandalism, brown dots on the cab door (wtf?)......

By the way, they do way more than add CBTC equipment/change strip maps. They have to rewire the cab and the cab area, do a lot of wiring....

  7. Cant wait R188 ( conversion ) #7300 series coming to (7).. I hope Corona Yard can able to maintain R188 #7300 series . Cant wait too see R188 conversion #7281 - #7290 to be delivered to (7) soon...  I hope Corona Yard maintain R188 conversion #7200 series well..

NO to 7300s! I rode 7321 yesterday and that one had brown stuff (rust?) on it's interior doors, and one of them was stuck as well..... that thing was vandalized and dirty as hell as well. Wouldn't like to ride those things on the (7)...

  8. I'd like to put this out here for myself and my fellow posters. I"ve been on these forums for a few years and I enjoy the back and forth. Having said that there is something that I've been noticing for a few weeks(months). It's also happening to a degree in the bus forums but it's especially prevalent in the subway section. At the risk of becoming a "grammar nazi" there are some threads, like the R188 one, where some posts are basically incoherent. IDK if it's an ESL thing or something else but it's very jarring to come across such a post in an otherwise interesting thread discussion. I'm not talking about people not agreeing with each other but rather posts that obsess over missing stickers on equipment, or new, converted, or SMSed equipment where one has to read and re-read a post to try to decipher the poster's point.. IMO instead of some people worrying about trainsets remaining in numerical order while they're out railfanning perhaps they should spend the same amount of time hitting up those English textbooks they've cast aside for the summer. It just doesn't look right, at least to me, when you can tell subway and bus fleets by number or sound but you can't get your points across clearly in a post. To an oldtimer like me the latter shows more intelligence than any thing else you have to say.I can read a post from SubwayGuy, Lance, VG8, Eric, or B35, for example and I know and understand what they're trying to convey. Same with Wallyhorse, LOL. I may not agree with their thoughts as posted but I know what they're saying. Some of the posts I'm speaking of come across as pure gibberish, as my grandmother might put it. All I'm asking is that we take our time and think about how our posts come across to others. Just my rant. Carry on.

Unfortunately, it's the fact that everyone in this generation doesn't care about their grammar on the internet. Some people, like me, do try to use correct grammar, instead of those who don't capitalize, don't use correct punctuation, and who we have no clue what they're trying to say. If you look at the people back then they sounded smart, way smarter than an average person today.....

  9. No more assumptions needed, NO BEDBUGS WERE FOUND!

There's finally some relief when it comes to bedbugs on the subway: The 7 train has been determined to be bedbug-free after an investigation, the MTA said on Thursday.

A straphanger told Business Insider he saw bedbugs "coming out from under the seat to feed on people's legs."

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said in an email that the MTA followed up on the report and checked the train and found no evidence of bedbugs.

Straphangers have been on edge since four N trains and a 5 train were fumigated after bedbugs were discovered in the cars earlier this month.

This summer's mini-outbreak of bedbugs on the subway is not the first time the insects have been caught riding the rails. In 2008, bedbugs were reported in the benches at two subway stations, and in 2009, a bedbug was reported on the R train.

Bedbugs are commonly found in beds, sofas and cushions, but they can also live in clothes.

Meanwhile, an MTA cleaner told the Daily News that she had been infested with bedbugs from her locker near the Ditmars station. The MTA fumigated the location, but she said she "started scratching two days earlier." She said she asked the MTA to fumigate her home, but they do not fumigate private homes.

An MTA spokesman confirmed on Thursday that they do not fumigate non-transit property, and said the MTA is continuing to do spot checks of crew rooms and other transit facilities and will fumigate if necessary.

    Jesus Christ, guys, really?

Who cares if one particular set has bedbugs or not? They're certainly going to spread, given how they originated from the (N) line, so that one set will probably end up getting them anyway. And bedbugs don't discriminate between train types, they'll appear wherever they please, AGAIN given that they came from the (N) line.

Not necessarily. You never know, maybe they came from a tourist, maybe they came from bums, maybe crews.....

  11. Subway cars A/C can't be adjusted like they are auto cars by there operators. Its only a on/off switch for the HAVC, not a circular knob with Red for heat and blue for A/C lol. Simply put, the NTT have a better HAVC system than the SMEEs which is why there more comfortable when the temperature is at extremes in Winter and Summer.

Then does it auto-adjust? Because well it gets louder sometimes and when it gets louder it gets cooler.... Same goes with SMEE....

  12. I railfanned on units 7833-7843 on June 21st (I think) when me and my uncle were checking out Woodside. Railfanned from Times Square to Woodside. I was careful though. :l Any current info on those units?

Other than A TON of vandalism, nothing else really to say...

  13. Let's see...

R62s & 68s - Poor lighting and poor AC (save in the middle of the car) That's because they usually don't turn on the highest A/C when I ride an R62..... On an R188 I'd always hear that loud HVAC and know it's on high, therefore it's freezing cold... On an R62A meanwhile you don't hear the HVAC much when it's turned on low, which is why it's so hot. Lighting is fine..... It's like in your house at night with only a lamp on....

                       - Terrible swaying and buzzing sound Every car sways. It's not just them, you know....

                       - Illegible/garbled announcements for the most part You know that's harder to fix than you think it is..... and it is way more costly, but not as costly as getting a new P/A system.

I wouldn't call those "rail-worthy"you wouldn't call these railworthy, but by FACTS it is rail-worthy. These cars run FINE and I don't hear anyone complain about them other than those people up in the UES, but rather cars that are needed because they need them for service.  Nothing more than that.

R46s  - Stuck in a time warp with that hideous 70s design Doesn't matter!

              - Lighting is better, but the doors take FOREVER to close The R160's have THE SLOWEST door motors in the system.

              - The (R) was plagued with them over the years and probably why service sucks so much on the line

              - I've used the (R) once or twice recently, and both times they've been R160s.... What a difference a car makes... Obviously because it's newer!

R32s & R42s - Well what can be said about them aside from the fact they should've been retired years ago... lol Very true, atleast something I can agree on...

  14. Two random things to say....

Haven't seen this in awhile - driving at Union Street waiting for the light at Northern Blvd, three buses were together (an OG sandwiched between two NG's, two Q28 and one Q13) playing follow the leader.... one after the other turning. One after the other they stopped, and left together, and eventually terminated together....

    Another thing...

"Rare sight" on the Q58 today, a very nice B/O let this woman running on, even after shutting the doors and was already waiting for the red light. He even kneeled the bus for her. This is "rare" because even on the Q28, if there's seats (there wasn't really any seats on that Q58 either) or if there isn't, there would be those people who run up to the bus and knock on the door, when it's already shut and waiting at the red light. 9 times out of 10 the B/O will just leave and not care. Not saying they have to open the doors, but it would be nice for them to do it.

  15. The sticker says "No coupler adapter in this car." So the cars with that sticker HAVE to be in the middle?

No, they don't. But I noticed that cars w/ those stickers are usually on the conductor ends.... Because when R188 sets are flipped (ex. FRONT 7849-7854,7844-7848 BACK) during testing you would see that sticker. When regularly coupled (7844-7854) there is no sticker seen on the ends.

  16. Just was wondering why they would have them in a different order for testing than in service.

I also find it hard to beleive a lighting cover can make the 188s brighter...

They do that with the R160. They put the usually supposed to be conductor ends as operating ends. You can tell if the front (or back) car has a sticker under it's front window. That means it's originally meant to be in the middle. Most of the NTT's have this sticker, and I actually don't know what it says but I know for sure it is only for conductor ends.

  17. Nonetheless, there will still be more R62A than R188 unless on a weekend or during the night....... The R188 fleet is only a bit more than 10 sets right now....... even if they run all of them (which they probably won't) the R62A will still most likely be the majority, especially during rush hour. Even during rush hour, on Monday, the only R188's I recalled seeing were... 7811-7821, 7822-7832, 7221-7230, 7231-7240, 7241-7250. Do not really recall seeing any more, maybe one extra set I didn't notice..... so yeah R62A is majority and will main majority for some time.
