F line bisection

Recently MTA did an analysis of (F) line.Essientially it is a long and not

so reliable line. see their report here.

http://www.mta.info/mta/news/releases/pdf/flinereport.pdf

Also MTA is going to eliminate the (W) line soon pending hearings.

This will result in a unreliable service along the Manhattan Broadway(BMT)

local service.

With these two in mind the proposal is to cut (F) into two almost equal parts.

This should probably be undertaken after the opening of at least the first

station on the SAS(i.e 72nd street/2nd ave).

1) Yellow(Orange?) F from 179th st/Hillside ave to Whitehall st(on broadway local line) via Hillside ave/QB express/63RD st connector//Broadway local.

2)Orange(yellow?) F from Stillwell(Coney island) to 72nd street/2nd avenue

via culver/rutgers tunnel/6th avenue/63rd st connection.

If implemented will allow (N) to be Broadway Express during weekdays.

Comments welcome.

Can you tell on which page you found this? I was skimming through and missed it. Also, the plan above will result in delays at 63 Street where the trains cross each other at grade.

The (F) unreliable? I highly beg to differ. It's a long line, yes, and shares trackage with other routes, which is described in the report. In a system like the MTA, there are going to be delays that in some situations can't be avoidable.

I read the report and the issue isn't the route itself but the infrastructure that's on the route, as well as an issue with overcrowding and scheduling issues. Chances are any changes that occur route wise would only be late night (As the report says). Plus any changes to the (F) would complicate things even further IMHO.

But during late night, delays are even less!

Thats what the report said. That's (MTA) logic, not mine.

o Revising service patterns off-peak, including the possibility of splitting midnight-hour (F) service into two, more manageable segments with guaranteed connections between the segments mid-route. Page 24, last paragraph. http://www.mta.info/mta/news/releases/pdf/flinereport.pdf
