reelbigfish Posted October 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2010 Grant awarded by FRA to plan expansion of South Station. This is much needed. Things operate at maximum capacity with the MBTA and Amtrak. This will allow more MBTA and Amtrak service into South Station.
TheKorean Posted October 26, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2010 They only serve 3 Amtrak lines, how busy could they be? Granted Acela and NER have a lot of trains leaving and arriving per day.
Paul P Posted October 26, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 26, 2010 I'm not very familiar with the station, but there are definitely more MBTA trains occupying the station than Amtrak trains.
reelbigfish Posted October 26, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted October 26, 2010 Amtrak certainly is not the busiest tenant. The MBTA runs many more trains than Amtrak, but for any more trains of either MBTA or Amtrak to run, the station needs to be expanded.
R62A 1991 Posted October 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 27, 2010 They only serve 3 Amtrak lines, how busy could they be? Granted Acela and NER have a lot of trains leaving and arriving per day. I've had to travel into S. Station several times during morning rush hour in the past year, and it was always quite a wait from Back Bay, the previous stop, to even get an open track into the station (I was on the Worcester line, which is one of the more busy lines that actually has regular express service). It could definitely use the expansion, especially considering it carries more lines than North Station by far. Also, considering they want to expand service on the Worcester line and others, they could use the extra capacity.
