Tracknut 0 Posted July 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 21, 2007 Where does the overhead cantenary for Metro-North service start?
Trainspotter 0 Posted July 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 21, 2007 Overhead cantenary starts in Conneticut I think where unprotected 3rd rail operations has been banned since the early 1900's. Even though they can use it they just never did. The rest of MNR uses 3rd rail and diesel electric where overhead is not used.
Tracknut 0 Posted July 21, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted July 21, 2007 So basically only in Connecticut. Do you know exactly where in Connecticut it starts?
NewJerseyT 0 Posted July 21, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 21, 2007 Nevermind I just proved myself wrong.... But I believe it starts a soon as it gets into Connecticut.
Mr. Harlem Line 0 Posted July 21, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 21, 2007 Metro-North New Haven Line trains make the switchover from third rail to overheard lines just west of the Pelham Station (in New York).

Harry 1,088 Posted July 22, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 22, 2007 I remember riding MNR New Haven line in the late 80's and always missed when the transition from 3rd rail to overhead occurred.
sebbieprops 0 Posted July 23, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 23, 2007 I ride the Metro-North New Haven line on occasion to New Rochelle, and there have been a few times where the power transfer is delayed, and for about 5-10 seconds, the lights on the train go out just before reaching the Pelham station. HomeBall 0 Posted August 10, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 10, 2007 Origially the crossover point was at Woodlawn Junction CP212 (CP 112 on the Harlem), but was moved back to Pelham so that if a train died on the tracks during crossing-over the train wouldn't be stuck in the middle of Woodlawn Junction delaying other trains. The catenary towers are still there today.
