There's timetables for all three routes on mta.info. You can compare the running time of the B38 from wherever you live at to Downtown BK vs your local (L) train station to the (A) line to downtown.

 

There's also Trip Planner on mta.info which might be even more helpful than the first option.

take the L to Lorimer for the G to Hoyt-Schermerhorn instead of getting the A in Manhattan. saves you having to go out to Manhattan and then back.

or should i take the L train to Broadway Junct. and transfer to the A train to Jay St?

Going to Manhattan isn't the only way to get the (A) from the (L).
